Annual Ceremony Honors Korean War Veterans
By Jorge V. Rosales
AZUSA - The Military Armistice
Agreement of July 27,
1953, ended 3 years of bitter
warfare on the Korean Peninsula
and stopped the spread of
Communism in Korea, signaling
to the world America's resolve
to stand against tyranny
and totalitarian regimes. More
than 1.7 million Americans
faced forbidding terrain and
harsh combat.
Throughout the conflict, the
American Armed Forces demonstrated
extraordinary honor,
skill, and courage. In the space
of 37 months, the United States
lost more than 36,000 soldiers.
More than 90,000 others returned
home wounded. And
even today, 60 years after the
guns went silent; over 8,000
Americans remain unaccounted
for.
On Friday, July 27, at 10:00
A. M., members of the Azusa
VFW Post 8070, American Legion
Post 180, Veterans Memorial
Committee, and Mayor Joe
Rocha honored all Korean War
Veterans, alive, deceased, and
unaccounted for in a ceremony
in front of the Veterans Memorial
Wall in front of Azusa's City
Hall. The ceremony was coor-
dinated by Jorge V. Rosales in
memory of its original founder,
John P. Moreno, Korean War
Veteran who died July 10, 2010.
In attendance at the ceremony
were over 150 persons,
including 24 Korean War Veterans
from Azusa and surrounding
cities. They were honored
Another Fabulous Evening
at Night on the Plaza!
GLENDORA - It was a
lovely evening with a full moon
and everyone was having a
wonderful time on July 14 at
the Glendora Public Library
Friends Foundation twelfth
annual "Night on the Plaza".
Kitty Garvey, committee chair,
and her dedicated committee,
created another delightful
evening for over 300 attendees,
and raised over $130,000
for the library this year.
Auctioneer Art Ludwick
had everyone bidding on auction
items such as a helicopter
ride over Glendora, the opportunity
to name a future
Glendora street, and a getaway
week Pirates Cove Resort
in Laughlin.…just a few
of the live auction items offered
that night.
The attendees enjoyed the
company of friends, the opportunity
to bid on auction items
and feast on a delicious dinner
catered by Chelsea Restaurant.
The evening was topped
off with dancing under the
moon provided by the band
'Film at 11 with the Late
Breaking Horns'. The proceeds
from 'Night on the
Plaza' go back to the Glendora
Public Library to support their
events and outreach programs,
such as the Summer Reading
programs for all ages, the
Adult Literacy, and early education
outreach to preschoolers
and expectant parents.
Garvey says, "I owe a big
thank you to my fellow committee
members Bernie Gore,
Roger Gutierrez, Sue Hart,
Sheryl Hill, Thom Hill, Beth
Hollingsworth, Pat Janes,
Diane Kent, Sheri King, Barbara
Lee, Patty Nichols, Lois
Riley, Judi Rudd, Judi
Schlothauer, Pam Vermons,
Jan White, Sherril White, and
Julia Yoder. I am also very
pleased that so far we have
raised over $18,000 toward the
library's book budget. This will
allow the library to purchase
Sherril White, Alfonzo Sanchez, Guadalupe Corder, and Ron White
Bruce Bocking, Nancy Gorey, Robert Mayo, Daily Mayo and Sheryl
Mayo
Daniel Garvey, Stacy Dover, Donna Caines, Catherine Battaglia and
Joe Battaglia
new books for the entire community
to enjoy." Garvey appreciates
the participation and
support of the community to
help make this such a wonderful
success. She is very proud
that her committee has raised
well over $1,250,000 million
dollars for the library over the
Korean War Veterans in front of Azusa's Veterans Memorial Monument with their issued Korean
Ambassador for Peace Medals and Certificates along with Congresswoman Judy Chu (center) and
Aquatics Manager
AZUSA - The City of Azusa
Recreation and Family Services
Department Aquatics Program
hosted its "Korporate Kardboard
Kayak Challenge" on Saturday,
July 28. Held at the Azusa Aquatics
Center-James Slauson Community
Pool, teams from local
businesses including three
teams from "Waste Management"
and "The Advertising
Specialists" (TAS), as well as
"Azusa's Golden Days Committee"
competed to build and race
kayaks that they made from
cardboard, plywood, foam
noodles and duct tape.
The teams, as well as "Jan's
Towing" donated to the Azusa
Aquatics Program, where funds
will go to new equipment for
its swimming lesson and swim
team programs. The five teams
had 2 hours to construct their
kayak, each with a unique approach
to the assembly of their
kayak. Each vessel was adorned
with personal touches to intimidate
their opponents, which
ranged from a shark shaped
kayak with vicious looking teeth
by the Azusa Golden Day's
Committee, to a "Catch My
Bubbles" plaque placed on one
of the three Waste Management
kayaks that were built.
Teams were treated to lunch,
sponsored by "Jersey Mike's"
and "Pepsi" before they set sail.
Each team paraded proudly
around the deck holding their
kayaks high above their heads
for spectators to see. The brave
volunteer chosen from each
team to race their kayak, carefully
stepped into their craft and
breathed a sigh of relief when
their construction held upon
placement into the water, then
anxiously awaited the sound of
the gun to start the race.
It was a quick defeat for two
teams (WM 2 and TAS) as their
kayaks quickly succumbed to
the water, while the other three
teams fought hard to row their
kayaks twenty-five meters
across the pool, turn and row
back. With each stroke of their
oar supporters, spectators and
teammates cheered for their
kayak to make it to the end. Ultimately,
Friedman will focus on leading
City of Hope’s scientific direction
and the comprehensive
cancer center while also ensuring
the success of the
institution’s historically strong
philanthropic programs. Under
his leadership, the scientific
pipeline of discovery leading to
new treatments for patients
has increased substantially, and
philanthropy has reached historic
levels in providing critical
support to City of Hope’s mission.
Stone was the initial president
and executive officer of
the City of Hope Medical
Foundation, an entity launched
in June 2011 to increase collaboration
between physicians
and staff and enable more coordinated
care for patients. In
this role, Stone worked with the
foundation board to plan, design
and implement the foundation
strategy. He was also
responsible for the day-to-day
management of the foundation,
including overseeing the foundation-operated
clinics; the
management services staff in
the foundation; and managed
care contracting for City of
Hope.
As chief strategy and administrative
officer, Stone
oversaw strategic planning
and strategy management for
City of Hope. He recently led
the creation and development
of the organization’s 10-year
strategic plan.
Stone joined City of Hope in
1996 as associate general
counsel and was promoted to
general counsel for the medical
center in 2000. In 2003, he
was named City of Hope’s
general counsel and corporate
secretary. He was named City
of Hope’s chief strategy and
administrative officer in 2009.
Prior to coming to City of
Hope, Stone was a practicing
attorney at the firms of Christa
& Jackson and Hanna and
Morton. He earned his law degree
at the University of Chicago
Law School.
