Help Injured Vet
GLENDORA — Please pray
for the recovery of Glendoran military
member Antonio Solorio. He
was severely injured by an I.E.D.
which rolled his humvee in Afghanistan
on July 6th ... He suffers
brain trauma, pelvic injuries
(for which he underwent another
surgery on Sept. 13th), and may
have to amputate a foot since the
heel was pretty much shattered
into nothingness...
He was taken to Germany from
Afghanistan, then to D.C., and
now is in Palo Alto, CA.
The family could use donated
frequent flyer miles as he is now
up north, but they have his
daughter attending pre-school
here at Citrus College in order to
have a stable home life, and she
will want to go visit her "broken
Daddy" as she calls him now,
soon.
Also, they have an infant
daughter, 5 months old, for whom
diapers and formula are a must -
his wife and the baby are staying
at the Fisher House across the
street from the Palo Alto Vets hospital.
If anyone would like to donate
Safeway/ Vons Pavillion grocery
gift cards, they would be appreciated
by the family. His wife
does have a mini-kitchenette at
the Fisher House.
Blessings to the Jarod Behee
family who have been through
this experience themselves and are
offering support to the Solorio
family in these trying times...
Students Team Up For Opening Day
WALNUT — Collegewood
Elementary students marched
onto the baseball diamond waving
brightly colored major
league pennants from the Red
Sox, Angels, Giants, Yankees,
Dodgers, Marlins, and more
during Opening Day ceremonies
held August 31.
The baseball themed rally
marked the beginning of the
2007-08 school year or season
for this sports centered campus.
Each of the 23 classes is represented
by a major league baseball
team, with flags flying outside
classrooms, pennants and
other memorabilia featured inside
the rooms, according to
Heather Garcia, Elementary
Learning Specialist.
"It's a fun way to bring team
spirit to Collegewood, "she said.
Several teachers on campus include
the baseball theme in lessons
throughout the year. A
baseball scoring system is used
during math classes in upper
grade classes.
Students and teachers
cheered as teacher Lori Huckler
introduced each class and their
major league team during the
Opening Day celebration. The
rally also signaled the beginning
of the Dr. Michele Borba's
Moral Intelligence program
implemented on campus.
Each month, students learn
about the character building virtues
which include empathy,
conscience, self control, respect,
kindness, tolerance and
fairness.
Students cheered as their team was announced.
New character traits are introduced
during assemblies that
feature skits performed by students.
For the month of September,
students received an
introduction to character development
along with a lesson promoting
good listening skills.
Principal Robert Chang, the
league baseball commissioner,
threw the official first pitch and
said, "Let's have a great season
and school year!"
Second graders Kelly Yu, Jeremy Custodia, Kanoa Matton and Billy
Yue, with teacher Michelle Michael during Opening Day ceremonies.
you all for your prayers and support.
Tony’s now at Stanford
Medical Center a very nice hospital
about a mile from the V.A.
where surgery went well there
were some complications but he
is now recovering. His wife
Ronnie is there with him and I will
be flying back on Wednesday
morning and come back next
week sometime. My other children
will be driving up this weekend.
He lost 6 pints of blood during
the surgery and had to be put
on a ventilator for a day which
was really scary. He was sent to
the ICU for the night and part of
Friday. Saturday he recieved 2
more pints of blood due to his
white blood count being low. We
were hoping the foot specialist
would give us hope to save his
foot but she said pretty much the
same as the other orthopedic doctors.
A life of sevear pain and minimal
use and walk with a limp and
cane. They’re planning his amputation
for this Thursday at
Stanford.
They have some of the best
doctors there. The amputation will
be just below his knee. I ask you
once again to pray to give him
strength both emotionally and
physically. My other children will
be driving up this weekend. I
Thank you all, Margaret,
More Than Bricks and Mortar
Glendora - "It's not about the
building, but about the lives we
will reach," Ed Underwood,
Senior Pastor shared with nearly
800 attendees at the September
9th Groundbreaking Ceremony
at the Church of the Open Door.
As the historic church that
was once located in downtown
Los Angeles and considered one
of the city's hallmarks, prepared
to break ground on its new
worship center, Pastor
Underwood expressed that the
event was "More than a celebration
of a building, more than
bricks and mortar. It's about
the broken lives we will reach-
-people without hope, marriages
that need putting back together
and kids who need to
know the love of Christ."
Glendora Mayor Ken
Herman, Councilman Gary
Clifford, State Senator Bob
Margett and State Assemblyman
Anthony Adams were
present to bring greetings from
the community. Reflecting on
the historical relationship between
Biola University and the
Church of the Open Door,
former Biola University President
Clyde Cook was also in
attendance.
Twenty-five Delta Nu teaching
society members met recently at
Gail Haynes home for a lovely
brunch and a “kick-off” meeting
for the new school year. Following
brunch, a special guest, Judy
Kearns, Chi State Corresponding
Secretary, and recently retired
Arcadia teacher, spoke. She presented
a power point presentation
of a very special motivational
book called 212° The Extra Degree.
Water boils at 212 degrees,
and the difference of one degree
in both water and our lives can
make a big difference.
It’s a proven factor that many
Olympic athletics, golfers, race car
drivers win by just a tiny edge
over the person behind them. We
need to strive just a little harder
to win and make a difference. In
our own lives we are responsible
for the results. It’s time for each
of us to turn up the heat. Five
qualities make up a 212 performance:
attitude, kindness, belief,
focus, and perseverance. Can you
image ... just one act of kindness
a week will add up to 52 acts a
year, and if you complain once
Glendora residents, Pastor
Underwood shared, "The new
worship building is part of the
church's heartfelt desire to provide
a welcoming facility to
Glendora families seeking to
learn about a relationship with
Christ while raising healthy and
strong families."
The church holds two services
on Sunday mornings. The
traditional service is at 9:30AM
and the contemporary worship
begins at 11:00AM. For more
Love Keeps An Appointment
My husband often tells our
friends to be careful what they
say because they may give me
an idea for a poem. This is
probably true of most poets and
it is certainly true of me. I am
always looking for a new subject
to put in rhyme. I especially
like to write ballads because
I am a story teller at heart.
When I am told something
that moves me emotionally, I
search for just the right words
to tell it in a poetic way, hoping
to bless others. The following
ballad tells a true story that I
read in a magazine several years
ago. It is my hope that you will
enjoy reading it as much as I
enjoyed writing it:
LOVE KEEPS
AN APPOINTMENT
"Six minutes to six P.M.",
The clock in the airport
stated.
His heart was in his mouth.
His breath was short and
bated.
What would this girl look
like?
Be a knock out or plain Jane?
This much loved long time
pen pal.
He looked at his watch again.
"Four minutes to six," it said.
His mind recalled her writing,
All those letters of encouragement,
That helped him go on
fighting,
The fear that crept into his
breast,
When duty gave cruel demand.
life?", she quickly replied, "My
wonderful husband, lover and
friend and my children, grandchildren
and great-grandchildren.
Our family has been truly
blessed by God." How fortunate,
both Azusa and Glendora
are to have this remarkable lady
in our midst. Her exuberance
and joy in serving others is an
encouragement to all who have
the privilege of knowing and
working with this remarkable
lady.

Newcomers Fall Kick-Off Luncheon
Phyllis Rector, Lynda Siminske and Annette Reynolds follow along as Amar show dance techniques.
by Lynda Siminske
Nearly fifty Glendora area
ladies attended the Fall Kick-off
Luncheon at Auline's Middle
Eastern Restaurant on Route
66. A wonderful buffet lunch
was served. Ladies had fun
comparing their summer adventures,
time with children and
grandchildren, and activities
here, there, and elsewhere.
The highlight of the luncheon
was the performance by local
modern Egyptian Belly Dancer
and teacher (Azusa Adult
School) Amar. She gracefully
showed the ladies how Belly
Dancing is done. Then she
brought extra scarves so some
brave Newcomers could try
their skills.
