More Than Bricks and Mortar
Glendora - "It's not about the
building, but about the lives we
will reach," Ed Underwood,
Senior Pastor shared with nearly
800 attendees at the September
9th Groundbreaking Ceremony
at the Church of the Open Door.
As the historic church that
was once located in downtown
Los Angeles and considered one
of the city's hallmarks, prepared
to break ground on its new
worship center, Pastor
Underwood expressed that the
event was "More than a celebration
of a building, more than
bricks and mortar. It's about
the broken lives we will reach-
-people without hope, marriages
that need putting back together
and kids who need to
know the love of Christ."
Glendora Mayor Ken
Herman, Councilman Gary
Clifford, State Senator Bob
Margett and State Assemblyman
Anthony Adams were
present to bring greetings from
the community. Reflecting on
the historical relationship between
Biola University and the
Church of the Open Door,
former Biola University President
Clyde Cook was also in
attendance.
Twenty-five Delta Nu teaching
society members met recently at
Gail Haynes home for a lovely
brunch and a “kick-off” meeting
for the new school year. Following
brunch, a special guest, Judy
Kearns, Chi State Corresponding
Secretary, and recently retired
Arcadia teacher, spoke. She presented
a power point presentation
of a very special motivational
book called 212° The Extra Degree.
Water boils at 212 degrees,
and the difference of one degree
in both water and our lives can
make a big difference.
It’s a proven factor that many
Olympic athletics, golfers, race car
drivers win by just a tiny edge
over the person behind them. We
need to strive just a little harder
to win and make a difference. In
our own lives we are responsible
for the results. It’s time for each
of us to turn up the heat. Five
qualities make up a 212 performance:
attitude, kindness, belief,
focus, and perseverance. Can you
image ... just one act of kindness
a week will add up to 52 acts a
year, and if you complain once
Glendora residents, Pastor
Underwood shared, "The new
worship building is part of the
church's heartfelt desire to provide
a welcoming facility to
Glendora families seeking to
learn about a relationship with
Christ while raising healthy and
strong families."
The church holds two services
on Sunday mornings. The
traditional service is at 9:30AM
and the contemporary worship
begins at 11:00AM. For more
less a day, that eliminates 365
complaints a year. Judy’s presentation
and the book would be helpful
for anyone in a leadership position.
People in the groups you
lead, don’t care about how much
you know. They want to know
how much you care.
Following Judy’s presentation,
a business meeting was held by
President Susan Hamilton. Delta
Nu is continuing and increasing
their “Literacy in the Laundromat”
to four local Laundromats. Boxes
of children’s books have been
place around town for children to
read while their parents are doing
the laundry.
Delta Nu will continue to help
and work with area teachers both
in the classroom and providing
ideas, help, and materials. A meaningful
project last year was with
Serenity Infant Care House in
Covina. We will continue to provide
needed supplies there and
are will begin a new project “Operation
Birthday Box.” Delta Nu
is also selling “Entertainment
Books” as a fundraiser to help
with the above project.
