POMONA — September 28,
was Azusa's Day at the Los
Angeles County Fair. Azusa
with the cities of Fontana and
Ontario. Many communities in
Los Angeles County and near
Pomona are given the opportunity
to have their own day at
the fair. The Fair, by all measures,
is the biggest and best in
the country.
Azusa was represented by
Mayor Joe Rocha, Council
members Uriel Macias and Robert
Gonzales, City Clerk Vera
Mendoza, City Manager Fran
an adult and a junior were honored.
Elaine Dominguez has
blessed Azusa's children with
her many hours of giving, sharing,
and loving. If anyone is responsible
for the ongoing after
school Azusa Mariachi Program,
it is Elaine. Lizette Salas,
who was awarded a Golf
Scholarship to the University of
Southern California for her academic
and athletic achievements,
was the recipient of this
year's junior award. She excelled
in golf nationwide.
Late in the afternoon on Friday,
a fun and colorful parade
was held at the Fair. Azusa organizations
and city officials had
fun riding down the parade
route waving at people and
throwing hundreds of brightly
colored necklaces to the linedup
crowds New Orleans style.
Following the two colorful
floats was Azusa Mayor Rocha
riding with his grand-daughter
Angel on a beautiful red Mustang
convertible, followed by
Miss Azusa-Jamie Pezold in a
DIAMOND BAR — About 100 Quail
Summit Elementary School second graders
enjoyed a day of hands on learning
and exploring at the L.A. County Fair on
September 26. Bus transportation was
provided through parent donations and
free admission was supplied by the
FairKid's Discovery Club Fieldtrip Program.
Each year, more than 100,000 elementary
students from over 500 schools in
Southern California visit the many curriculum-based
exhibits available at the
Fair. They toured a career expo, played
in the snow, learned about California history
and participated in a milking demonstration
at Fairview Farms.
For many, it was their first exposure
to farm life or playing in the snow.
"That was really exciting!" said
teacher Erin Ruhl.
Hole-In-One Golfer Wins $10,000!
WEST COVINA —The Mounted Enforcement
Team is a division of the West
Covina Police Department had a
fundraising golf tournament back on August
23, 2007 at the California Country
Club, 1509 S. Workman Mill Rd., in
Whittier.
They have different fundraising events
during the year to assist with being able
to provide equipment for the horses. The
Mounted Team is often used for
Mounted Honor Guard, Mounted Color
Guard details, memorials and funerals for
fallen officers and to participate in parades.
This golf tournament was the largest
fundraising event for our Mounted Team
and they teamed up with L.A. County
Industrial Technology Education Association
(LACITEA) to assist with their
scholarship program.
It was a great event with a great banquet
The lovely city of Glendora is now even
lovelier; thanks to the help of one Citrus
College instructor and his students.
Ceramics teacher Mike Hillman, along
with students Debbie Boese, Lynn
Hendricks, Judy Miller, Eli Terriquez and
Deanne Wiley, recently completed an art
project for a new commercial development
located on the northwest corner of
Grand Avenue and Route 66 in Glendora.
"This project came about because of
Glendora resident, Mr. Bill Bird, who is
the developer of the shopping center,"
Hillman said. "Bill was looking for artists
to create work for the new development
that was planned and said that he wanted
to use local talent, possibly students."
The project, entitled "Grand/66," was
the result of a requirement that mandated
public art to be incorporated into the development
before final approval for construction
could be granted.
"We initially considered a life-sized
bronze sculpture to be located in the plaza
area," said Bird. "An alternative we considered
was to have some form of artwork
on the wall feature facing the intersection.
This is what we finally decided
on after discussing the idea with the city
and our businesses located in the development."
Bird says he was interested in assigning
the project to Citrus students because
it would express support of the college.
"We selected Citrus College in our con-
swing and he was $10,000 richer. Duran
Villegas got a “Hole In One” and became
a big winner.
One September 29th, the check became
available and he picked it up in front
of the West Covina Police station.
Villegas, who plays golf a couple of
times per month and, every once in a
while, may play up to four times in a
month.
At the time he made the shot, he felt
that it was a pretty good shot and thought
it was going to be close to the pin.
When it landed, he thought it may have
a chance to go in and it did.
On hand to present the check were
some of the organizers of the event.
Mike Harden, Lt. Ron Mitchell, Motor
Officer Elsa Mitchell and Roberta Floyd
representative for LACITEA.
The Mounted Enforcement Team and
LACITEA wanted to thank all the other
golfers, the WC Police Explorers, their
sponsors and the many volunteers who
helped make this event such a great success.
tinuing interest in supporting the college
as we believe it provides a valuable asset
to the community," Bird said. "We
contacted Mr. Hillman at the college to
determine if this was a project he and
his students would be interested in
working on. He enthusiastically endorsed
the idea and expressed an interest
in becoming involved."
Hillman was happy to learn that Citrus
College students were being considered
for the project.
"I was excited by the prospect," he
said. "We discussed several sites and
ideas and I told him that I had a group
of students I felt would be able to fabricate
the ceramic tiles and install them."
Bird gave the creative group the theme
of "Route 66" and Hillman quickly began
his research.
"I researched the iconography and
other details related to Route 66," Hillman
said. "I visited and photographed local
landmarks such as the First Christian
Church of Glendora, the first Glendora
City Hall from 1913 (which is now the
Glendora Historical Society), Bennett
Avenue Palms, our beloved or hated
gumdrop-shaped ficus trees, the Griffith
Park Observatory, and the actual site
where the artwork would be located."
Once the participation of the Citrus
group was confirmed, the next step in
the creative process was to develop a
concept and have it approved.
"Once the initial concept was ac-
cepted, the design work included hundreds
of drawings and photographs to
use as authentic sources," Hillman said.
"I wanted to include an actual map of
Route 66, from Chicago to Los Angeles,
in the scheme. We did this by using
the actual route as the contour of
the foothills."
After months of tweaking, the final
design was approved.
"We transferred our design to tile,
using the ancient Islamic technique of
Cuerda Seca. This is a technique that I
have taught in my tile classes at Citrus
College," Hillman said. "Literally meaning
The Toy Chest
One of the nicest perks of my
senior years has been being a
grandmother to six remarkable
little people who have been pure
joy in my life from the moment
they came into the world.
I took great delight in playing
trucks and cars with them
on the floor and making tiny
sandwiches for tea parties on
the patio, taking them to the zoo
and trips to the park for picnics.
What fun it was to shop for
toys to surprise them and bring
them enjoyment.
Each child had its own toy
box loaded with things to fascinate
and entertain them when
they came to visit.
They are all young adults now
and I enjoy watching them as
they pursue careers and exercise
the talents and abilities that
God has given them.
Each graduation, job promotion
and achievement brings me
a thrill that only another grandparent
can understand.
I treasure all the wonderful
memories they have given me
of the fun times we've shared.
One of the special ones is of their
toy boxes that were such a pleasure
to fill.
In reminiscing, there is both
joy and pathos.
Thus I wrote a poem about
Retired Teachers Greet And Meet
by Lynda Siminske
Every year when school
starts, many retired teachers
feel a few minutes of sadness
and nostalgia, as they are retired
and are not getting to go back
to school, great eager students,
and share with them a life time
of wonderful teaching experiences.
But for over a hundred
local teachers they had a special
time of being together recently
at one of the California
Retired Teachers (CRTA) four
times a year meetings. This
was a luncheon at the Covina
Women's Club. Helen Storland
presented an inspiring poem,
and CRTA local President,
Robbie Cendejas presented the
new board and what each
person's job would be in the
coming year. CRTA began in
1941, and in 1941 a group of
retired teachers started the local
Division 13. Robbie then
presented Charlottee Sauter,
LES (named after important
California educator, Laura
Settles) State Scholarship Chairman
who introduced our
division's winner of a $ 2,000
scholarship. She is Maria
Carreon-Huitron who is going
into the field of education and
studying at Cal Poly, Pomona.
Maria spoke on what the scholarship
meant to her and introduced
her mother. Patriotic
music was lead by Karen
Cullenat the piano.
The guest speaker for the
meeting was our State CRTA
Legislative Advocate, David
Walrath, who works in Sacramento.
He addressed several
issues of major interest to CRTA
members both as retire teachers
and concerned citizens including,
the status of Federal
Social Security Penalties,
Supplemental Benefits Maintenance
Account, the What and
Why of CRTA's (PAC) Political
Action Committee, and current
educational legislative issues.
CRTA members eyes all opened
wide, when he announced there
is a new bill requiring teachers
to work until they are 67 to retire.
He did not feel any action
would b taken until 2009 regarding
Social Security as legislators
don't want to take ac-
tion until after the Presidential
election. California teachers
won and got $ 500, 000, 000 in
retirement money, we are now
working on what rate of interest
that will be. It was shocking
to hear that 70% of retired
teachers do not have enough
most people in California do not
want their taxes raised. An extensive
