Retired Teachers Greet And Meet

Every year when school
starts, many retired teachers
feel a few minutes of sadness
and nostalgia, as they are retired
and are not getting to go back
to school, great eager students,
and share with them a life time
of wonderful teaching experiences.
But for over a hundred
local teachers they had a special
time of being together recently
at one of the California
Retired Teachers (CRTA) four
times a year meetings. This
was a luncheon at the Covina
Women's Club. Helen Storland
presented an inspiring poem,
and CRTA local President,
Robbie Cendejas presented the
new board and what each
person's job would be in the
coming year. CRTA began in
1941, and in 1941 a group of
retired teachers started the local
Division 13. Robbie then
presented Charlottee Sauter,
LES (named after important
California educator, Laura
Settles) State Scholarship Chairman
who introduced our
division's winner of a $ 2,000
scholarship. She is Maria
Carreon-Huitron who is going
into the field of education and
studying at Cal Poly, Pomona.
Maria spoke on what the scholarship
meant to her and introduced
her mother. Patriotic
music was lead by Karen
Cullenat the piano.
The guest speaker for the
meeting was our State CRTA
Legislative Advocate, David
Walrath, who works in Sacramento.
He addressed several
issues of major interest to CRTA
members both as retire teachers
and concerned citizens including,
the status of Federal
Social Security Penalties,
Supplemental Benefits Maintenance
Account, the What and
Why of CRTA's (PAC) Political
Action Committee, and current
educational legislative issues.
CRTA members eyes all opened
wide, when he announced there
is a new bill requiring teachers
to work until they are 67 to retire.
He did not feel any action
would b taken until 2009 regarding
Social Security as legislators
don't want to take ac-
tion until after the Presidential
election. California teachers
won and got $ 500, 000, 000 in
retirement money, we are now
working on what rate of interest
that will be. It was shocking
to hear that 70% of retired
teachers do not have enough
