welcome
Welcome to Remembrance Travel (formerly
Poppy Travel) for Schools and Young People
Remembrance Travel is the travel division of The
Royal British Legion. As the national custodian of
Remembrance, The Royal British Legion and
Remembrance Travel believe that Remembrance
should be used to inform people about the realities
of conflict, those that are affected by wars and the
importance of peace.
The Royal British Legion was created to support
ex-Service men and women and their families.
Part of that support was to take them to the
cemeteries, sites and memorials associated with
conflict. This commitment has led to us organising
tours to Western Europe and beyond, since the
Great Pilgrimage of 1927.
Remembrance Travel Tours for Schools and Young
People, along with The Royal British Legion’s
learning programme, support schools and young
people as they start to understand and participate
in Remembrance and learn about people whose
lives are affected by conflict.
Knowing about those that fought, or those whose
lives were affected by conflict, has the power to
bring communities together, recognising contributions
and sacrifice around the world. For students in the
UK, the opportunity to travel with Remembrance
Travel and participate in an act of Remembrance,
can open up new experiences and levels of
understanding about those who live around them.
our approach bursaries
With over 85 years of worldwide travel experience
as the custodians of Remembrance, there are a
number of reasons to choose Remembrance Travel:
• we meet the needs of the national curriculum
• our tours are individually designed to suit the faiths,
abilities and interests of the group
• we are committed to education through learning
outside the classroom
• our experienced CRB-checked guides are fully
trained to work with schools and young people
• we operate an inclusive bursary scheme ensuring
our tours are accessible to all.
Bringing learning to life
Our tours are designed to bring the past to life. Our aim
is that students understand the sites they visit not as
monuments to people of the past, but as living memories
to help us understand and reflect on the present.
Engaging and understanding
Visits to real historical sites, including battlefields and
military cemeteries provide learners and educators
with an opportunity to gain knowledge in different
ways. Working with The Royal British Legion’s
Learning Programme, your Remembrance Travel tour
will be designed to reflect the aims of your school,
curriculum and the interests of your students.
Group cohesion
Remembrance Travel believes that group cohesion
builds a sense of unity and respect that is essential
to a successful tour. To increase the shared learning
opportunities the simple ‘listen and learn’ approach has
been developed into an interactive style with related
activities. The activities encourage group/team work
without resorting to endless worksheets. Remembrance
is explored in its different forms of collective and
individual practice. An act of Remembrance is held at
the end of each tour creating a group bond.
benefits for teachers
Experienced guides
Our CRB checked guides, many with direct Service
experience, encourage participation, exploration and
debate as they recount the experiences of those who
were there. They use tour-specific support materials
linked to curricula or themes to create interest and
involvement.
Customised tours
Our range of tours is always growing both across the
UK and overseas. If we do not offer a tour to suit your
group’s requirements, either in this brochure or on
the website, we welcome a call to discuss designing
something special for you.
A helping hand
We understand the difficulties that schools and
organisations can experience when travelling outside
of their usual environment. At Remembrance Travel
we can offer advice and help with all stages of
pre-tour planning including risk assessments to
ensure a smooth process throughout.
In as little as one day we can enhance
the National Curriculum for History and
Citizenship, we can also provide support
for Geography, English and PSHE.
As a welfare charity, we know that some
people find it difficult to afford to participate in
certain activities. The purpose of the bursary
scheme is to ensure that young people, from
many backgrounds, are able to visit sites and
memorials that are part of all our histories.
uk
We know that sometimes groups want to
learn about Remembrance and those affected
by conflict, without travelling overseas. For
these groups, we offer a growing selection
of one-day tours within the UK to suit both
Primary and Secondary schools.
We use a local area to explore sites, memorials,
individuals affected by conflict and Remembrance
with young people. A Remembrance Travel guide
will lead the day, providing historical information
and engaging in activities such as recording,
drawing, reading testimony and poetry and
interactive discussion.
Just like our overseas tours, all our one-day tours
finish with an act of Remembrance – pupils or
students select readings and reflect on what they
have learnt.
We support the National Curriculum for Key
Stages 2, 3 and 4 and can explore ideas around
community cohesion, diversity and memory.
Safety
Primary school pupils are supplied with highvisibility
vests to wear on the tours on all sites,
apart from the NMA, which is a closed site. This
improves safety, reduces risk and enables teachers
and guides to keep an eye on them at all times.
Ypres
Ypres
The town of Ypres in Flanders is forever associated
with Remembrance of World War I. It was the scene
of heavy fighting throughout the conflict, including
the first major use of chemical weapons, and
almost saw the British Army destroyed.
The British offensive of 1917 introduced a word
that has become synonymous with the brutality of
mechanised warfare – Passchendaele. The Ypres
Salient had an evil reputation with British soldiers,
but inspired poets such as Sassoon and Rosenberg
and artists such as Grosz.
The modern town of Ypres is a centre of
Remembrance and reflection, and every night hosts
the famous Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate,
itself a symbol of Remembrance.
Somme
The Battle of the Somme was the largest battle on
the Western Front, and is particularly significant to
Britain: those five months in 1916 claimed 400,000
British casualties, the highest in any single battle,
with a record 58,000 of those on the first day alone.
This battle still incites controversy: was it an
appalling and unjustifiable loss of life, or a necessary
campaign to wear down the German Army?
Villages and fields in this part of France are forever
linked to cities and regions of Britain. The sites,
memorials, cemeteries and museums tell the story
of the men who were there, and are poignant
reminders of the sacrifices and impact of the battle.
“School trips are a vital part of
a child’s learning which add a
depth that cannot be developed in
classrooms. The Academy annual
Remembrance tours have two
purposes; academic and pastoral.
Through their unique position as
a part of The Royal British Legion,
tours directed by Remembrance
Travel bring my students an
understanding not only of the
history of the First World War, but
also a deeper connection with
the people for whom the horrors
of war were reality. Their guides
thoughtfully make use of the sites of
the Great War to bring the history
to life, encouraging reflection on
events and their meaning today.
This experience has a profound
impact on student performance,
but perhaps, most importantly, in
developing them as people.”
“Remembrance Travel’s objectives
align with mine; to promote
learning and Remembrance. This
means that I am able to customise
tours to the needs of students. A
bursary to support disadvantaged
students means I don’t have to
leave anyone behind. Thank you,
without you Academy students
would not have had such rich
experiences.”
Normandy
The D-Day invasion of France
on 6 June 1944 is probably the
best-known military operation
in history. The largest-ever
amphibious attack, the invasion
led to the battle of Normandy
and ultimately the liberation
of France.
The D-Day beaches are evocative
locations, often appearing in film
and television dramatisations, and
many are still host to remnants
of the battles, such as German
fortifications. There are memorials
and cemeteries for both Allied and
German soldiers across Normandy.
now I will remember forever.”
The story of the Italian front
is steeped in controversy, and
there is still debate about the
conduct of the Allied battles.
The sites and themes include the
Salerno Landings in September
and the Anzio landings to
the famous battles for Monte
battles. Troops from all over
Arnhem
Nijmegen
The Arnhem and Nijmegen
area was the site of a very
dramatic campaign in the
autumn of 1944.
Code named ‘Operation Market
Garden’, Allied troops were
air-dropped into these regions
of the Netherlands to sieze
crossings over the many
waterways. The plan was then
to enable powerful armoured
forces to enter Germany and
end the war – but the operation
proved a controversial failure
that cost many lives.
The battles involved British,
American, Polish and German
troops, and the operation has
been documented extensively
in film and TV. The many
museums, memorials and
features on the ground provide
fascinating evidence for
exploring the history that led
to incidents of extreme courage
as well as high casualties.
Visitors can examine the battle
areas for themselves and reach
their own conclusions about
what went wrong.
Berlin
The German capital of Berlin is a
key site for both World Wars and
the Cold War, and was the scene
of a highly symbolic and historic
reunification in 1989.
Throughout the 20th century, the
city of Berlin was a focal point for
history and culture. A tour to Berlin
can cover the events of a turbulent
century, journeying through a capital
city associated with liberalism,
science, revolution, terror, war, division,
reunification and hope. Its streets and
buildings tell the stories of World Wars I
collapse of Communism.
Krakow
Krakow was the historic
capital of Poland for
centuries, containing a
beautiful castle and one
of the oldest universities
in Europe. Krakow also
had an established Jewish
community, some four
centuries old, until the
Nazis arrived in 1939.
An hour away, the three
concentration camps of
Auschwitz received and
destroyed over one million
men, women and children
between 1941 and 1945.
anniversary
tours
Throughout the year, significant dates stand out for
times of commemoration – 11 November, 1 July,
6 June. In some years, other dates take on greater
significance, such as the 70th anniversary of the
withdrawal of Dunkirk or the 95th anniversary of
Passchendaele. For years, 11 November apart,
many of these anniversaries were commemorated by
those who have a personal connection to the original
events, but as time goes on veterans, their families
and friends are either no longer with us or are unable
to keep the commemorations going.
We believe that these dates matter as they remind
us of people’s past experiences of wars as well
as connecting us to the reality of current conflicts.
That is why we have introduced our anniversary
tours programme. Schools and groups are invited
to book their tour to coincide with a significant
commemoration and, in addition to the regular parts
of their tour, we will enable participation in some of
the official commemorative events.
By booking an anniversary tour, students and their
schools or group (cadets, guides, youth clubs, etc)
will be helping to keep the memories alive of the
actual men and women that served and suffered all
those years ago. The young people will be part of
the future of Remembrance, not just observers of it.
Citizenship
A tour can support the Citizenship Curriculum
requirements for students to:
contributed to the events of the past
• learn about the diversity of British society and
how that has developed and been represented
in conflict and peacetime.
It can also raise questions about citizenship, patriotism,
inclusion and diversity. The history of Commonwealth
provides an important entry to exploring the racial and
ethnically mixed communities we live in today.
shoulder to shoulder
with all who serve
The Royal British Legion has been helping Service people and their
families, past and present, for 90 years. Thousands of those that are
currently being helped by the Legion are from recent conflicts in Iraq
and Afghanistan and we are here to help them re-build their lives
when they return.
People as young as 17 years old can be sent on active Service,
so veterans are often younger than many realise. There has
only been one year (1968) since World War II when a British
Service person has not been killed on active Service. Every
year, Legionline, the Legion’s helpline, answers thousands of
requests for support. 300,000 staff and volunteers organise the
Poppy Appeal every year. More than 40 million poppies were
made and distributed by the Legion last year.
The Legion is also the national custodian of
Remembrance and safeguards the Military Covenant
between the nation and its Armed Forces. It is best
known for the annual Poppy Appeal and its emblem,
the red poppy.
The Legion helps both serving and ex-Service men and
women and their families, not just those who fought
in the two World Wars but also those involved in the
many conflicts since 1945 and those still fighting today.
Every week the Legion spends over £1.5 million on
its vital welfare work – over 9.5 million people in the
UK are eligible for Legion support. From residential
and respite care to advice, counselling and financial
support, the Legion’s welfare services help people
struggling to find homes and jobs or needing urgent
practical help in their own homes. The Legion is there
for them all.
