There is no set level of academic achievement<br />

required by students to attend <strong>Remembrance</strong><br />

<strong>Travel</strong> Tours <strong>for</strong> Schools <strong>and</strong> Young People –<br />

in<strong>for</strong>mation, activities <strong>and</strong> discussion can all<br />

be adapted to address the needs, levels <strong>and</strong><br />

abilities of everyone.<br />

key stage 2 primary <strong>schools</strong><br />

The one-day <strong>tours</strong> in the UK are all suitable <strong>for</strong> Key<br />

Stage 2. They meet a number of the subject needs<br />

including history, Citizenship, English <strong>and</strong> Art <strong>and</strong><br />

Design as well as supporting an underst<strong>and</strong>ing of<br />

cultural heritage <strong>and</strong> commemorations.<br />

key stage 3 11–14 years of age<br />

The <strong>tours</strong> support the current Key Stage 3 curriculum.<br />

History<br />

The <strong>tours</strong> support the History Curriculum skills<br />

requirements of:<br />

• underst<strong>and</strong>ing causation <strong>and</strong> chronology<br />

• recognising <strong>and</strong> interpreting evidence<br />

• using testimony <strong>and</strong> primary sources<br />

• exploring <strong>and</strong> examining issues of the past that<br />

affected decision making<br />

• h<strong>and</strong>ling artefacts<br />

• being able to discuss the issues <strong>and</strong> facts of an<br />

event <strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong>mulating arguments <strong>and</strong> conclusions<br />

about those events.<br />

The subject content of the <strong>tours</strong> will support studies<br />

of the First <strong>and</strong> Second World Wars, the Holocaust<br />

<strong>and</strong> the Cold War.<br />

Citizenship<br />

A tour can support the Citizenship Curriculum<br />

requirements <strong>for</strong> students to:<br />

• participate in activities<br />

• debate <strong>and</strong> discuss issues<br />

• explore contemporary events<br />

• recognise the events <strong>and</strong> issues that have created<br />

the society in which they live<br />

• learn about the different identities of those that<br />

contributed to the events of the past<br />

• learn about the diversity of British society <strong>and</strong><br />

how that has developed <strong>and</strong> been represented<br />

in conflict <strong>and</strong> peacetime.<br />

It can also raise questions about citizenship, patriotism,<br />

inclusion <strong>and</strong> diversity. The history of Commonwealth<br />

<strong>and</strong> Empire troops’ contribution in both World Wars<br />

provides an important entry to exploring the racial <strong>and</strong><br />

ethnically mixed communities we live in today.<br />

English<br />

Explore different sources <strong>and</strong> styles of writing as well<br />

as examining the work of war poets, writers <strong>and</strong> official<br />

documents in the historic environment.<br />

key stage 4 years 10 & 11, 15–16 years of age<br />

GCSE<br />

The <strong>tours</strong> will draw out the same skills as at Key<br />

Stage 3 with additional emphasis on student<br />

preparation <strong>for</strong> the trip to carry out their own<br />

investigations.<br />

Other specific aspects of the trip can be drawn out<br />

after consultation <strong>and</strong> according to students’ studies<br />

such as: the First <strong>and</strong> Second World Wars, the<br />

Holocaust <strong>and</strong> the Cold War.<br />

The Humanities<br />

All of the <strong>tours</strong> contain cross-curricular in<strong>for</strong>mation<br />

<strong>and</strong> skills development. They are there<strong>for</strong>e<br />

ideally suited as an opportunity to address a number<br />

of subjects:<br />

• historical facts <strong>and</strong> background<br />

• examination of l<strong>and</strong>scape <strong>and</strong> topology of<br />

battlefields to support Geography<br />

• discussion of moral <strong>and</strong> religious questions to<br />

examine Religious Education<br />

• reading poetry <strong>and</strong> other sources to improve <strong>and</strong><br />

develop literacy <strong>and</strong> literature underst<strong>and</strong>ing.<br />

Post-16 age groUP<br />

<strong>Remembrance</strong> <strong>Travel</strong> Tours <strong>for</strong> Schools <strong>and</strong> Young<br />

People can be adapted to suit many aspects of the<br />

post-16 curriculum, either as a st<strong>and</strong>ard historical<br />

tour that examines the issues in greater depth <strong>for</strong> ‘A’<br />

Level History students or as ‘Topic-led Trips’ such as:<br />

Poetry <strong>and</strong> Conflict; exploring Peace settlements;<br />

regeneration after conflict; or War Crimes <strong>and</strong> War<br />

Crimes trials.<br />
