Bringing learning to life
Our tours are designed to bring the past to life. Our aim
is that students understand the sites they visit not as
monuments to people of the past, but as living memories
to help us understand and reflect on the present.
Engaging and understanding
Visits to real historical sites, including battlefields and
military cemeteries provide learners and educators
with an opportunity to gain knowledge in different
ways. Working with The Royal British Legion’s
Learning Programme, your Remembrance Travel tour
will be designed to reflect the aims of your school,
curriculum and the interests of your students.
Group cohesion
Remembrance Travel believes that group cohesion
builds a sense of unity and respect that is essential
to a successful tour. To increase the shared learning
opportunities the simple ‘listen and learn’ approach has
been developed into an interactive style with related
activities. The activities encourage group/team work
without resorting to endless worksheets. Remembrance
is explored in its different forms of collective and
individual practice. An act of Remembrance is held at
the end of each tour creating a group bond.

Experienced guides
Our CRB checked guides, many with direct Service
experience, encourage participation, exploration and
debate as they recount the experiences of those who
were there. They use tour-specific support materials
linked to curricula or themes to create interest and
involvement.
Customised tours
Our range of tours is always growing both across the
UK and overseas. If we do not offer a tour to suit your
group’s requirements, either in this brochure or on
the website, we welcome a call to discuss designing
something special for you.
A helping hand
We understand the difficulties that schools and
organisations can experience when travelling outside
of their usual environment. At Remembrance Travel
we can offer advice and help with all stages of
pre-tour planning including risk assessments to
ensure a smooth process throughout.
In as little as one day we can enhance
the National Curriculum for History and
Citizenship, we can also provide support
for Geography, English and PSHE.
As a welfare charity, we know that some
people find it difficult to afford to participate in
certain activities. The purpose of the bursary
scheme is to ensure that young people, from
many backgrounds, are able to visit sites and
memorials that are part of all our histories.

Who is eligible?
• Bursaries are currently limited to school
applications only.
• There is no limit on the number of students
requiring assistance.
• Bursaries are only offered on the basis of the
number of students receiving free school meals
who would be travelling on the tour.
• Bursaries are not restricted to any particular age
or year group.
How much will The Royal British Legion
contribute to my tour?
• Bursaries will meet up to two thirds of the cost
for those students on free school meals.
• Bursaries are limited to fund up to two days of
a tour. Exceptions may be made for three days on
those tours that would normally be done in two
days but an additional day’s coach travel is
required due to the school’s position in the UK.
How can I apply on behalf of my group?
• You must apply for, and complete, the bursary
application pack via the Remembrance Travel office.
• A bursary panel meets three times a year, once
each term, to assess applications against the
criteria. Your application will be assessed by the
panel on the date of the next meeting following its
arrival into the Remembrance Travel office.
What else should I know?
• Bursaries are limited to certain financial conditions
and to certain tours only. Please read the criteria
in the application pack for further information before
completing the application form.
• Bursaries are awarded to the school going
on the tour, not individual students.
• The Royal British Legion provides a defined
budget for bursaries each year. Once the budget
has been spent, schools will be informed and
encouraged to apply for the following year.
• The school will be required to complete
evaluation forms about the trip as a condition
of receiving the bursary.
• The Royal British Legion reserves the right to
refuse any bursary application.
