Remembrance Travel tours for schools and young people

We know that sometimes groups want to
learn about Remembrance and those affected
by conflict, without travelling overseas. For
these groups, we offer a growing selection
of one-day tours within the UK to suit both
Primary and Secondary schools.
We use a local area to explore sites, memorials,
individuals affected by conflict and Remembrance
with young people. A Remembrance Travel guide
will lead the day, providing historical information
and engaging in activities such as recording,
drawing, reading testimony and poetry and
interactive discussion.
Just like our overseas tours, all our one-day tours
finish with an act of Remembrance – pupils or
students select readings and reflect on what they
have learnt.
We support the National Curriculum for Key
Stages 2, 3 and 4 and can explore ideas around
community cohesion, diversity and memory.
Safety
Primary school pupils are supplied with highvisibility
vests to wear on the tours on all sites,
apart from the NMA, which is a closed site. This
improves safety, reduces risk and enables teachers
and guides to keep an eye on them at all times.

Portsmouth
Portsmouth has a long history
with the Navy and as a civilian
port the tour here tells the story
of the Historic Old Port and its sea
defences, and includes visits to
the memorials for the Home Front,
the Falklands conflict, and World
Wars I and II, exploring the lives of
those affected by conflict.
The tour can also include a visit to
Commonwealth War Graves.
For older students arrangements
can be made to visit Southwick
House – site of the planning for
D-Day.

The National Memorial Arboretum
(NMA) in Staffordshire was created
as a permanent memorial site. It
contains memorials to Service men
and women and to civilians affected
by conflict.
Located in the heart of the country,
within the National Forest near
Lichfield, the National Memorial
Arboretum comprises 150 acres
of trees and memorials devoted to
the concept of Remembrance.
This tour could include
The Garden of the Innocents,
Gallipoli Memorial, The Royal
British Legion Memorial,
memorials commemorating
the role of women in war and
the Armed Forces Memorial
