The story of the Italian front
is steeped in controversy, and

conduct of the Allied battles.
The sites and themes include the
Salerno Landings in September

Arnhem
Nijmegen
The Arnhem and Nijmegen
area was the site of a very
dramatic campaign in the
autumn of 1944.
Code named ‘Operation Market
Garden’, Allied troops were
air-dropped into these regions
of the Netherlands to sieze
crossings over the many
waterways. The plan was then
to enable powerful armoured
forces to enter Germany and
end the war – but the operation
proved a controversial failure
that cost many lives.
The battles involved British,
American, Polish and German
troops, and the operation has
been documented extensively
in film and TV. The many
museums, memorials and
features on the ground provide
fascinating evidence for
exploring the history that led
to incidents of extreme courage
as well as high casualties.
Visitors can examine the battle
areas for themselves and reach
their own conclusions about
what went wrong.
