shoulder to shoulder
with all who serve
The Royal British Legion has been helping Service people and their
families, past and present, for 90 years. Thousands of those that are
currently being helped by the Legion are from recent conflicts in Iraq
and Afghanistan and we are here to help them re-build their lives
when they return.
People as young as 17 years old can be sent on active Service,
so veterans are often younger than many realise. There has
only been one year (1968) since World War II when a British
Service person has not been killed on active Service. Every
year, Legionline, the Legion’s helpline, answers thousands of
requests for support. 300,000 staff and volunteers organise the
Poppy Appeal every year. More than 40 million poppies were
made and distributed by the Legion last year.
The Legion is also the national custodian of
Remembrance and safeguards the Military Covenant
between the nation and its Armed Forces. It is best
known for the annual Poppy Appeal and its emblem,
the red poppy.
The Legion helps both serving and ex-Service men and
women and their families, not just those who fought
in the two World Wars but also those involved in the
many conflicts since 1945 and those still fighting today.
Every week the Legion spends over £1.5 million on
its vital welfare work – over 9.5 million people in the
UK are eligible for Legion support. From residential
and respite care to advice, counselling and financial
support, the Legion’s welfare services help people
struggling to find homes and jobs or needing urgent
practical help in their own homes. The Legion is there
for them all.
