4 | EXPRESS | 12.20.2012 | THURSDAY Nation Fallout After Benghazi Report 3 State Department officials resign after damaging findings Washington Three State Department officials resigned under pressure Wednesday, less than a day after a damning report blamed management failures for a lack of security at the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, where militants killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans on Sept. 11. Obama administration officials speaking on condition of anonymity said those who had stepped down were Eric Boswell, the assistant secretary of state for diplomatic security; Charlene Lamb, the deputy assistant secretary responsible for embassy security; and Raymond Maxwell, the deputy assistant secretary of state who oversees the Meanwhile … The independent review panel’s report broke little new ground about the timeline of the deadly attack on the American mission in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11 but found that there had been a lack of cooperation and confusion over protection. The report did confirm that there was no protest outside the consulate, where four Americans were killed, even though U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice had linked the attack to protests over an American-made, anti-Islamic film. An ensuing brouhaha led her to withdraw her name from consideration as secretary of state. On Wednesday, Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., kept up the criticism of Rice: “Now we all know … she knew what the truth was. It was a cover-up.” (AP) Maghreb nations of Libya, Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco. The department declined immediate comment on the resignation of the officials whose decisions had been criticized in the unclassified version of the Accountability Review Board’s report that was released late Tuesday. Public hearings were set for Thursday on Capitol Hill. The board’s co-chairman, retired Adm. Mike Mullen, said the board had not determined that any offi- cials had “engaged in willful misconduct,” but added, “We did conclude that certain State Department bureau level senior officials … demonstrated a lack of leadership.” Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was to have appeared at Thursday’s hearings but canceled after fainting and sustaining a concussion last week while recovering from a stomach virus.
