BACKGROUND Luhambo Sunday Jazz and Soul Sessions is an initiative of Luhambo Jazz Concepts. It is designed to be an avenue to expose Swazi jazz and soul artists to a diverse audience of jazz aficionados. It is packaged in a unique and proudly Swazi format to serve as a meeting point for jazz and soul music, arts and culture in settings that also profile unique tourism features of the beautiful Kingdom of Swaziland. As such, our jazz and soul sessions are held at different areas across the country. Our shows are headlined predominantly by live Swazi jazz and soul performances. Because the environments in which we host our shows are generally outdoor and relaxed, the concept also provides a platform for family outing as well as social and business networking. GOAL OF THE FESTIVAL The main goal is to grow the concept to become a melting pot of Swazi arts, culture and tourism, while aspiring to become a regional and continental musical platform. Luhambo’s long term plan is to establish a centre for arts and music, a platform where aspiring and established Swazi artists will launch and hone their musical careers. As such, we have initiated partnerships with other establishments locally and in South Africa, such as the Durban BAT Centre 1 . Through the proposed partnership with the BAT Centre, we anticipate to develop a cultural exchange programme, where Swazi artists and South African artists may share ideas and even get to record or perform together on stages locally and in South Africa. Using our profile and networks, we hope to also negotiate sponsorships and scholarships for deserving artists to develop their craft in well developed markets. SHOW FEATURES One of the unique features of our shows is that they are relevant to the package that the Kingdom of Swaziland offers – beautiful scenery, arts, culture and lifestyle and to the audience 2 we deliver it to. To date, Luhambo has successfully hosted two Sunday Jazz and Soul Sessions, attracting a total estimated crowd of 1,500 jazz and soul followers. We have also attracted growing sponsorship 3 and partnerships mainly from small businesses, who are keen to align their brands with our concept. Our maiden show, Luhambo Sunday Jazz and Soul Session 1 was hosted on Easter Sunday 2012 in partnership with eDladleni African Restaurant, renowned for its uniquely Swazi cuisines and a homely setting. Perhaps a major highlight from this show was exposing an unknown Swazi Mbhaqanga guitarist, Manteza, whom we offered his maiden show. He was subsequently booked for other events. In line with our goal, we intend to expose more Swazi artists on our platform. WHAT HAPPENS AT THE LUHAMBO SUNDAY JAZZ AND SOUL SESSION EVENT? The event features: Main Stage with a rotating cast of independent music acts. Priority is given to Swazi artists, although the stage is open to international performances. 1 The BAT Centre was established by legendary musicians Sipho Gumede and Busi Mhlongo as a premier centre for arts and culture in KwaZulu Natal and South Africa. 2 Our audience profile: Young adults (25-39) – approx. 35%; Adults (40-65) – approx. 55%: Other – 10% 3 Sponsoring partners to date are: Smart Media, Positive Pulse, Waterman Swaziland, Build It Mbabane, Pick N Pay Ezulwini, Café di Afrique, Swazi TV, SBIS, MTN Mobile Money, eDladleni African Restaurant, Simunye Country Club. Peripheral activities include information stall, arts, crafts and food vendors, bringing the finest local handcrafted items and art as well as a variety of delicious food all available to the public. The kids’ zone, featuring a safe, structured and most of all fun area for kids of all ages to play and enjoy activities and the featured entertainment for attending families. Luhambo Sunday Jazz and Soul Session 2 was hosted on July 22 nd 2012 in partnership with Simunye Country Club, a venue chosen for its long-standing history combined with wild life, culture and home to one of Swaziland’s major exports, sugarcane. An estimated crowd of 1000 attended the session headlined by 12 performing artists from Durban, Nelspruit and Swaziland. LUHAMBO JAZZ AND SOUL SESSION 3: WORLD AIDS DAY The show is planned for 1 st December 2012 to coincide with the national and global World AIDS Day commemoration and to usher in the festive season. The show will be hosted in a three-stage format: Main stage at Maguga Dam – featuring jazz and soul artists, Jimmy Dludlu, Zakes Bantwini (both subject to availability), Spanella Workshop for Jazz, Soul Friends, Zoe the Seed, Zaza, Mpho, Outcry, Melody Mayaba, Karibu, Shanik, Bholoja, Itallo. Maguga View Point Restaurant Dance stage – featuring a dance floor by South African and Swazi DJs. Poetry and reggae stage – featuring a poetry session by Swazi poets and Mbongeni and the African Drummers). Side activities: Kiddies’ games, hiking, boat rides, bikers show, exhibition stands for sponsors and small businesses, particularly those based in the Pigg’s Peak-Maguga corridor. A camping site will be allocated to those who will need to rest after the show. Negotiated accommodation rates will be accessible to show patrons. Security to be provided by a private security firm, and complemented by regular patrols by the Royal Swaziland Police and the area’s community policing forum. Excursions such as boat riding, hiking etc. will be provided as options. Social/community benefit: The show is designed to make a social call to action through music as our way of contributing towards efforts to roll back the impact of HIV and in particular to send a prevention message on the day. The Maguga community will directly benefit from the venue costs (venue costs are channelled to the community of the area through a standing agreement with KOBWA). Luhambo will sell t-shirts with the generic theme. Interested companies and organisations will be encouraged to design messages with a strong/compelling HIV prevention impact on the tshirts. Messages to be voted for by the public on the day. Winning company/organisation will receive special recognition and mention by the MCs on the day. Further, after the show, Luhambo will donate a certain profit from the t-shirt sales to the company/organisation’s chosen HIV/AIDS related charity project. FOR DISCUSSION ONLY.
