5 W<strong>in</strong>e Packag<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Bottles and Bottl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Packag<strong>in</strong>g plays a huge role <strong>in</strong> market<strong>in</strong>g by communicat<strong>in</strong>g about the w<strong>in</strong>e‟s<br />

<strong>in</strong>tr<strong>in</strong>sic properties. Glass has dom<strong>in</strong>ated the packag<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry for a long time but<br />

environmental concerns and <strong>in</strong>cons<strong>is</strong>tent bottle supply <strong>is</strong> slowly chang<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>is</strong>.<br />

Currently, bottle weight <strong>is</strong> a contentious <strong>is</strong>sue. A new trend sees w<strong>in</strong>eries us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

lighter bottles with a recycled content. Most top w<strong>in</strong>eries, however, cont<strong>in</strong>ue to use<br />

heavier bottles and fancy labels to d<strong>is</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gu<strong>is</strong>h their flagship w<strong>in</strong>es. The Tetra Pak,<br />

PET, and the W<strong>in</strong>e Pouch are glass alternatives, with experiments underway with<br />

other materials such as alum<strong>in</strong>ium. These glass alternatives have been used ma<strong>in</strong>ly<br />

for entry and mid level w<strong>in</strong>es. S<strong>in</strong>ce garag<strong>is</strong>te should be synonymous with quality,<br />

we will only look at glass here. 91<br />

The <strong>in</strong>ert quality of glass makes it an ideal vessel, be<strong>in</strong>g transparent, strong and<br />

a good maturation vessel. There are also numerous colour choices as well as<br />

different sizes to choose from. Unfortunately the choice of bottles available <strong>in</strong> <strong>South</strong><br />

<strong>Africa</strong> <strong>is</strong> limited due to only a few bottle companies ex<strong>is</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g. Anyth<strong>in</strong>g exotic or<br />

different must be imported from overseas. Bottles can only be ordered by the pallet<br />

load. If you get them delivered, they expect you to have a forklift to take them off the<br />

truck. Otherw<strong>is</strong>e, you need labour to off load by hand. The d<strong>is</strong>advantage of th<strong>is</strong><br />

besides time <strong>is</strong> you have taken the bottles out of their sterile environment, so you<br />

want to bottle soon after the delivery. There are also a couple of recycled bottl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

plants, Greens Recycl<strong>in</strong>g be<strong>in</strong>g the most popular. Although recycled bottles are<br />

about 60% the price of new bottles, scratches and lots of breakages are problems.<br />

Bottl<strong>in</strong>g can be done with your own bottl<strong>in</strong>g unit. These usually come with 2 to 6<br />

fill<strong>in</strong>g heads which you adjust to fill your bottle to the required height. The cork <strong>is</strong><br />

then <strong>in</strong>serted with a hand cork<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>e. Th<strong>is</strong> method <strong>is</strong> f<strong>in</strong>e for a few thousand<br />

bottles but there are drawbacks, ma<strong>in</strong>ly differences <strong>in</strong> fill<strong>in</strong>g levels and the level of<br />

the cork after <strong>in</strong>sert<strong>in</strong>g. Other problems would <strong>in</strong>clude uptake of oxygen while<br />

bottl<strong>in</strong>g, no bottle r<strong>in</strong>ser, and hav<strong>in</strong>g to buy a filter<strong>in</strong>g system if you want to filter. I<br />

worked with th<strong>is</strong> method for my first few years and a major problem I had was<br />

crimp<strong>in</strong>g of the cork by my cork<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>e. Th<strong>is</strong> left a narrow escape route for the<br />

w<strong>in</strong>e which then sta<strong>in</strong>ed the top of the cork. The corker also put some corks <strong>in</strong> too<br />

deep and some protrud<strong>in</strong>g from the bottle mak<strong>in</strong>g the capsule look untidy. With th<strong>is</strong><br />

method you also need a mach<strong>in</strong>e to shr<strong>in</strong>k your capsule on to the top of the bottle.<br />

There <strong>is</strong> no small scale screw cap equipment available at present.<br />

Your other option without any capital outlay <strong>is</strong> to get a mobile bottl<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>. Your<br />

ma<strong>in</strong> concern here <strong>is</strong> to get a reputable team. The drawbacks are some teams might<br />
