CARNIVORA
description
Has a long, narrow body with a
bushy tail. The fur is usually a rich
chocolate brown, but can look almost
black. Looks much like a large ferret,
but wild ferrets do not occur in Ohio.
habitat
Mink are found near running
waters of streams and rivers and the
standing waters of marshes and lakes,
especially in wooded or brushy areas.
reproduction
Mating occurs in the winter. The
female usually makes a den in a
burrow along the bank of a stream
or lake, or under a stump or log. The
gestation period is variable due to
delayed implantation.
did you know?
Like its distant relative the skunk, the
mink has anal scent glands which can
excrete a fluid that smells somewhat
like skunk musk.
