What’s “Show - Legal”?
Welcome to all our new members, I’m so glad
to see you are already entering shows! I thought
you’d like to know what is “legal” and what is not,
in our shows, and review also for our longer-term
members (notice I didn’t say older?).
Obviously, when you paint from your own
photo resource or imagination, your work is
“original” and may be submitted to a show if it
meets the other criteria of the prospectus. What
seems to cause the most confusion is whether
paintings done in a workshop are “original.”
Work done totally on one’s own in the course
of a workshop, not copied from the instructor but
done from one’s own resource, is okay to submit
to a show -- as long as the student completed
it. In other words, if the instructor painted on the
student’s paper, then it is NOT the student’s own
work. (In workshops I’ve taken, I always keep an
extra piece of paper handy, and if the instructor
seems to be headed toward painting on my
painting, I slide the paper over in front of him and
say “Show me here.”) So if I take a workshop on
painting animals, and I paint a picture of a cow
from my very own photo or sketch, that would be
okay.
However, if the student paints from one of
the teacher’s resources, and other students have
access to the same resource, OR if the teacher
doesn’t specifically “give” the resource photo
[and the right to paint it] to that one student
ONLY, then the art work should not be submitted
to a show. When the instructor paints from one
photo or sketch and some or all in the class paint
the same image, it doesn’t matter that yours looks
different from everyone else’s, it was not your own
idea even though it was a great exercise, so you
would not be entering that one in a show.
This is always a problem for the Show chairs
and helpers to spot. Since they can’t be at all
the workshops people take, it is the responsibility
of all our members who see something amiss to
report it to the Show Chair and VP of Shows. If
you don’t tell us, the situation will likely not be resolved.
When you do let us know, we will address
the issue with the artist, and the reporter’s name
will not be disclosed. It may be an honest mistake
and the painter just didn’t remember when
she painted it but, when asked about it, remembers
and removes it from the show voluntarily.
I hope these tips help everyone know what’s
“legal” and what’s not. If you have other questions
about entering paintings in a show, I would
be happy to talk to you about it and, who knows,
it might make another article for the Sketchbook!
MESSAGE
FROM THE
PRESIDENT
RESOLUTIONS:
a decision as to future action:
a resolving, or determination:
deciding.
What a start to the New Year!
Our first General Meeting/demo and
workshop with Tom Owen were both
a great success. At the “Creme de la
Creme” awards reception, a crowd
of members with family and friends
were impressed with the talent in
the collection of work. Tom was not
only impressed with the show as he
described the award winners, he also
gave SAWG high praise as a top organization
among many Watercolor
Guilds he visits throughout the year.
What am I looking for in 2012?
After giving this year a great deal of
thought, for myself, I need to create
more time for painting. Through
our meetings and receptions, I’m
looking forward to getting better
acquainted with the SAWG membership.
A new volunteer that I talked
to at the last Show Reception had
decided to step up and become
more active in the Guild. She was
having a great time helping out
and being part of the show. What
can members do? There are many
areas to become active, to give your
volunteer hours either as a docent at
the gallery once a month while getting
to know the public and fellow
artists or helping out at various Guild
functions and meetings. Something
as simple as putting announcements
on the chairs at the General meetings
or helping clean up and set up
equipment is a lift to those who do
it. Bringing refreshments to receptions
is another contribution. We all
help to make the Guild the amazing
organization it is growing to be!
For this year as I write my
thoughts in the editorials, who
knows what the future will bring? For
SAWG it looks bright!
SIGNATURE SHOW WINNERS
Another outstanding Signature Show has come
to a close. Awards judge, Tom Owen, the January
Workshop artist, knew he had a difficult job ahead
when he arrived at the SAWG gallery to choose
five winning paintings. At the reception on Jan.
13th, he talked to members, friends and family
gathered about the work he selected.
Honorable Mention Awards went to Elaine
Pageler’s, “Moon Glow” and Jerry Becker’s, “Quail
Impressions”. “Hacienda Ochoa” by
Christine Matthey-Becker received
an Award of Merit. Award of Excellence
painting, “Desert Rat and Friend”.
The top prize,
Best of Show was given to Bonnie
Bedillion for her piece titled “Go
CAD Go”.
good. Sales included two
original paintings, six bin
pieces, twenty-seven calendars,
six Tom Hill books
and five sets of cards. The
gallery is enjoying both new and repeat visitors who make the gallery a regular
seamlessly getting the Signature
Show checked in and hung without
the usual help I give show chairs.
Thanks, everyone, for the great
support you’ve given your Gallery,
through your work hours and your
entries. We’ve needed your entries
to pay our expenses and keep the
Gallery open, and you’ve really
come through! It will be even more
important the next 3 years with our
extended lease. I’ll get a schedule
out before our snowbirds fly for
home, so everyone will know how
many paintings to do this summer!
Sign up for bins at $10 a month!
Bring cards for free, just fill out a
CARD-ventory sheet. These items
are priced so people visiting the
Gallery can buy SOMETHING, even
if they can’t afford a painting just
now. It gets them in to see our work,
and feel comfortable coming back.
Cards and Bin paintings promote
painting sales!
JANUARY WORKSHOP REVIEW
TOM OWEN RETURNS
Popular artist/ instructor Tom Owen
was last in Tucson for a demo and workshop
in March of 2006. After his return
visit in January, he received rave reviews
from nearly 20 participants.
Many of them repeating the class, students described
Tom as structured, fun, motivating and a constructive
critic. With daily lessons on design principles, techniques
and application, they learned specifically “how to drop in
color”, the process of taking a drawing to a good painting,
how to create luminescent light, strong values and
“the use of underpainting”. Thanks go to Tom for another
successful workshop, a colorful demo at the General Meeting
and his instructive comments at the Signature Show
reception.
