Suitable dimensions for an energy level display board.<br />
The chemical specimens display boardis particularly useful when used to support<br />
the study of inorganic substances in relationship to the Periodic Table. For<br />
example during the study of Topic 2 the display board should be continuously<br />
present and carry (as far as possible) specimens of the chlorides and oxides of<br />
the second and third short period elements. The visible presence of the compounds<br />
is an effective reminder to the students of the change in properties that<br />
occurs across a period. Similarly in Topic 5 samples of the halogens and their<br />
compounds can be added to the board as they are investigated but when concluding<br />
the topic the specimens should be re-arranged to illustrate the oxidation<br />
numbers of the halogens in their compounds. Another good time to use the<br />
display board is during Topic 16 when d-block elements can be displayed in<br />
their different .oxidation numbers: here, as elsewhere, students can be encouraged<br />
to build up the display using their own laboratory material. The<br />
