Figure 1.1: Loss of regularity <strong>in</strong> the crystall<strong>in</strong>e network (Tkacova, 1989)<br />

Mechanochemical effect <strong>in</strong> <strong>f<strong>in</strong>e</strong> particles has created <strong>in</strong>terest am<strong>on</strong>g researchers due<br />

to the abnormal behavior of the ground <strong>f<strong>in</strong>e</strong> particles which has crystallite size <strong>in</strong><br />

nanometer range (Bid et. al., 2001). These particles exhibit abnormalities such as<br />

<strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> reactivity, reducti<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>itial thermal decompositi<strong>on</strong> temperature, phase<br />

transformati<strong>on</strong>, decrease <strong>in</strong> s<strong>in</strong>ter<strong>in</strong>g temperatures and enhancement of leach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>process</strong> due to amorphizati<strong>on</strong> and smaller crystallite size. (G<strong>on</strong>zalez et.al., 2000;<br />

Zhang et. al., 1996; Temuuj<strong>in</strong> et. al., 1999; Beg<strong>in</strong>-Col<strong>in</strong> et. al., 1999; Sanchez et. al.,<br />

2004; Mi et. al., 1999; Welham, 1998; Kal<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong> et. al., 2003; Ryou, 2004; Hu et. al.,<br />

2003; Benezet and Benhassa<strong>in</strong>e, 1999).<br />

Another issue that relates to mechanochemical effect dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>f<strong>in</strong>e</strong> <strong>gr<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>process</strong> is<br />

the exist<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>gr<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g</strong> limit. Boldyrev et. al. (1996) menti<strong>on</strong>ed that there was a certa<strong>in</strong><br />

size called tough-brittle transiti<strong>on</strong> size where particle above this size particle would<br />

experienced brittle breakage whilst particles smaller than this size would experienced<br />

plastic deformati<strong>on</strong>. The stress required to break a small particle may be rather high,<br />

especially if the material is hard. The mechanical impacts <strong>in</strong> the <strong>gr<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>mill</strong> were<br />

obvious to be limited by <strong>in</strong>tensity which was determ<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>mill</strong> design and the<br />

operat<strong>in</strong>g c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong> (Boldyrev et. al., 1996). Mechanochemical effect took place if the<br />

particle size was smaller than the tough-brittle transiti<strong>on</strong> size, and sec<strong>on</strong>dly, the stress<br />
