16 Smooth Log Books of the 9-13 August aerial survey have been completed and preliminary breakdown of slides by frames to specific pods of animals has been completed. Species observed during the survey are listed below: Sea Otter Enhydra lutris Northern Sea Lion Eumetopias jubatus Walrus Odobenus rosmarus divergens Harbor Seal Phoca vitulina richardii Gray Whale Eschrichtius robustus Minke Whale Balaenoptera acutorostrata Harbor Porpoise Phocoena phocoena Some areas not surveyed in June because of fog were surveyed during the August survey. Areas surveyed only in August were southside Unalaska Island, south side Umnak and adjacent islets including Ogchul, Vsevidof, Samalga, Adugak, and Bogoslof Islands. IV. Preliminary Interpretation of Results None V. Problems Encountered/Recommended Changes Weather conditions - Fog, high winds, rain and other factors all affect the success of survey flights. When possible during flights, routing is changed to obtain the best weather conditions over each area to be surveyed. In future planning, sufficient time should be allowed for delays caused by weather. Tidal conditions - Tide tables should be examined well in advance of the survey and stage of tide taken under consideration when planning surveys of species likely to respond to the influence of tide. Camera gear - The importance of a second camera taking duplicate photos of animal concentrations was clearly demonstrated during the August flights. Two photographers took identical photos of walrus concentrations on Round Island, north of Bristol Bay. The animals were uncountable on one series of slides due to underexposure, but countable on those of the backup photographer. We plan to use two cameras on future flights to obtain better series of slides, to use in counting animals. 4
