Methods: Observations of marine mammals are reported to the Marine Mammal Officer and recorded in Logs provided by the Marine Mammal Division, Northwest Fisheries Center. On receipt of Logs from vessels, Division staff examine and classify observations preparatory to carding data. D. All vessels listed under "A" are working at least in part in study area. Tracklines not currently available. E. Data Collected or Analyzed: NOAA Ship McArthur logs received from period 5 March to 17 August. F. Activities Planned for Next Six Months: 1. An observer will be placed aboard the NOAA ship Miller Freeman for the period 9-30 November. 2. Observers will be placed on other vessels during winter and early spring cruises in the Gulf of Alaska and Bering Sea. 3. Sightings will be coded and carded for species, number seen, location, behavior, direction of travel, weather and perhaps other information. Computer printout of the data, a narrative report, and charts indicating location of sightings by month will be compiled. 4. Distributional data will be examined through computer programs by month where sufficient sightings are available or by season (3 month periods). Sightings per unit of effort will be compared and displayed in a manner similar to that used in studies of pelagic fur seal distribution. When sufficient data have accumulated it will 20
III. Results: be examined by the Post-stratified random sample method (Cochran, W. 1963. Sampling Methods. J. Wiley and Sons, N.Y. 415 pp.) to develope population indices. Since most ocean research is conducted in this area during late spring through early fall data on winter distribution and abundance will be minimal. See Section II. IV. Preliminary Interpretation of Results: None V. Problems Encountered/Recommended Changes: Minor changes will be made in Observation Log Sheets to simplify recording data. VI.
