Counseling and Mental Health Services (CMHS)<br />

The campus environment can be both exciting and<br />

challenging. It can also be highly stressful since<br />

social and emotional concerns can interfere with<br />

effective functioning and academic performance.<br />

CMHS is committed to helping students benefit<br />

from their college experience. One way students can<br />

do this is to talk to a mental health pr<strong>of</strong>essional in<br />

a supportive atmosphere to aid self-understanding<br />

and the resolution <strong>of</strong> personal concerns. Although<br />

CMHS may work with students in crisis, their<br />

primary goal is to assist students with their concerns<br />

before they develop into more serious problems.<br />

CMHS works to promote students’ emotional,<br />

relational, and personal development. CMHS is a<br />

friendly and helpful place students can come to seek<br />

a safe, confidential, and supportive environment<br />

to do the work they need to do to be a successful,<br />

happy, and healthy person!<br />

CMHS <strong>of</strong>fers a variety <strong>of</strong> services to students<br />

including: group, individual and couples<br />

counseling; psychiatric assessment and medication<br />

monitoring; campus outreach and consultation; and<br />

training. CMHS provides brief model therapy. In<br />

MANDATORY STUDENT HEALTH HISTORY FORM<br />

DUE: July 1, 2012<br />

Who Gets It: Department <strong>of</strong> Student Health Services<br />

Where did it come from: The student health history<br />

form will be sent to new students after the $150<br />

acceptance fee is paid.<br />

How can I still get one?: Access the Student Health<br />

Services website at www.shs.uconn.edu.<br />

Purpose <strong>of</strong> form: The health form documents a<br />

student’s medical records as well as provides pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

adequate immunization against measles and rubella<br />

in order to attend classes.<br />

CMHS, appropriate and pr<strong>of</strong>essional referral to<br />

community agencies are arranged. CMHS also<br />

<strong>of</strong>fers emergency services 24/7 while school is<br />

in session. Emergency services can be accessed<br />

during the day by walking in to the center and<br />

after hours by calling the CMHS main number at<br />

(860) 486-4705.<br />

In addition to all <strong>of</strong> this, CMHS <strong>of</strong>fers a variety<br />

<strong>of</strong> services via its website including information<br />

specific for parents and families. <strong>Parent</strong> and<br />

Please know that CMHS considers itself to<br />

be partners with UConn parents and families<br />

especially during times when they are working<br />

with your student. While they maintain strict<br />

confidentiality <strong>of</strong> your student’s mental health<br />

records, students are <strong>of</strong>ten willing and interested<br />

to invite parents and families in to be involved in<br />

their treatment.<br />

MANDATORY MENINGITIS IMMUNIZATION<br />

<strong>Connecticut</strong> State law requires that any college<br />

student residing in university-owned housing<br />

be vaccinated against meningitis as a condition<br />

for living in the university’s residence halls and<br />

apartments. Students can obtain the meningococcal<br />

immunization through their health care provider.<br />

The health form documents the meningitis<br />

immunization. Students cannot move into their<br />

residence halls if this requirement is not met. The<br />

<strong>University</strong> is <strong>of</strong>fering a meningitis immunization<br />

clinic for students who cannot obtain it from their<br />

health care provider by appointment only.<br />
