Serious environmental weed<br />

Garden escape<br />

Found in moist areas, gullies and streams<br />

Features: Perennial herb with a tuberous rhizome.<br />

Large glossy green arrowhead shaped leaves<br />

on long fleshy stalks to 1.5m. Large white funnel<br />

shaped flowers with a bright yellow spike in the<br />

middle, from late winter to spring.<br />

Dispersal: Seeds spread by birds, foxes and water.<br />

Dumped garden plants with rhizomes can re–shoot.<br />

Warning: Poisonous. Ingestion can be fatal.<br />

Common Onion Grass<br />

Romulea rosea var. australis<br />

Status:<br />

Serious environmental weed<br />

Features: Upright perennial herb growing from an<br />

underground corm. Fine leaves to 35cm, oval in<br />

cross section. So tough that mowers leave them<br />

uncut or tattered. Small pink to purple flowers with<br />

yellow centres in spring. Abundant in pasture,<br />

roadsides and waste areas. Follows disturbance into<br />

bush.<br />

Dispersal: Seed. Corms transported in<br />

contaminated soil.<br />
