Last year, the
Children’s Discovery
Center under new
management opened
its doors to academic
programs and
students at Laramie
County Community
College.
Carrie Westling,
manager of the
Children’s Discovery
Center, said her vision
was to have the CDC
as a center for learning
for not only the children
but also LCCC
students and faculty.
This was a newer goal
that Westling said
she hoped to achieve
by making everyone
more aware of the
CDC and the possibilities
it has to offer.
Several academic
programs have already
started to take
advantage of the
opportunities the
CDC can provide.
Nursing, dental hygiene,
education and
psychology programs
have opportunities to
observe and work with
children. This provides
a real-life, hands-on
experience for students.
It also provides
a learning experience
for the children.
Brad Becker, a
freshman in music
education at LCCC,
teaches children about
music and musical
instruments. Through
the CDC program he
is able to create lesson
plans for the children.
Becker said, “It’s a very
challenging job, keeping
them engaged,
because with that age
group it’s very hard
to keep these kids
engaged for more than
five, 10 minutes.”
Depending on the
age group, he teaches
anything from music
therapy; singing and
playing for the children,
to teaching basic
music theory; reading
sheet music and identifying
rhythm.
He was inspired to
go into music education
by his high school
band director Tim
Mattis in Ohio. “For
me, it is an honor and
a privilege to be able
to educate and inspire
kids this early,” he
said, noting it not only
helps him in his future
career but also the
youngsters.
Being thrown into
the mix now helps direct
what he is learning
and how he will
teach in the future.
Being able to be a part
of the CDC and working
with the children
just gives him more
years of experience
to become a better
teacher in his career.
The CDC also
employs students as
teachers and substitutes
and is available
for all students.
Westling said of the
facility in the Arp
Building, “we are lucky
to be housed inside
the school.” This gives
children opportunities
that other facilities
don’t. Children work
with students learning
about different aspects
of life and have
an opportunity to see
where they will be in
their future.
The CDC has open
enrollment throughout
the year as long
campus news
Children’s Discovery Center
as room is available.
This gives students
and employees a place
for their children to go
while they are in class
or at work. Children
from the ages of 6
weeks to 5 years are
accepted into the program,
which is open to
the entire community.
This gives LCCC
the chance to provide
a service to the community
while students
receive credits and
real-life experience
vital in many fields
after graduation.
The CDC is
licensed through the
Wyoming Division of
Family Services and
is accredited with the
National Association
for the Education of
Young Children and
child and adult care
food program. The
CDC has adjunct
teachers and mentors
who work closely with
the children.
Westling said she
invites anyone who is
interested in discovering
more about the
CDC to visit her office,
Room 155 in the Arp
Building for a tour or
email her at cwestlin@
