Artist: Hoffmann or Hoffman [sic]. Engraver: Dunkarton [copy 1]; H. Kingsbury [copy 2]. First state (copy 2): the name “Mart. Hoffmann” appears on the
drum Linnaeus is holding; the plate bears Kingsbury’s name below the image, and the words “H. Kingsbury sculp.” appear faintly on a plinth within the plate.
Several signs of wear to the plate, especially in lettering. Second state (copy 1): the plate has been reworked by Dunkarton after Kingsbury’s death; lettering
has been made sharper; Dunkarton’s name has replaced Kingsbury’s beneath the image, but the words “H. Kingsbury sculp.” on the plinth within the plate have
been sharpened; Hoffmann’s name has been somewhat clumsily amended to “Mart. Hoffman”. Mezzotint. Monochrome in Lindley Library copies, but
coloured copies exist.
