Thornton, Robert John (1768?-1837)
New illustration of the sexual system of Linnaeus (1799-1807)
Botanical extracts (1810)
Temple of Flora (1812)
Comparison of plates
The major colour plates in Thornton exist in multiple states, many having been reworked for later issues, and all that appeared in the 1812 Temple
of Flora were re-engraved for quarto publication. Details of different states of the colour plates were compiled by Handasyde Buchanan and
published in Geoffrey Grigson’s facsimile edition of The Temple of Flora (1951). Condensed versions of Buchanan’s comments are appended,
with additions when required by the versions in our copies. Dates supplied by Buchanan, not shown in our copies, are given in bold face. To these
have been added details of the monochrome engravings that appeared, not only in the New illustration, but also in the Botanical extracts, whose
content overlaps considerably with that of the New illustration.
For each plate this table gives the title, attribution and date, and the location of that plate in the different copies in the Lindley Library. Because
the plates are unnumbered, their order of binding is largely arbitrary, and possibly no two copies of any of these titles have the plates bound in
exactly the same order. In this table, they are listed according to the order they are found in our principal copy of the New illustration, followed by
any additional plates that appear in other copies of that work; the remainder by their order in our principal copy of the Botanical extracts, followed
by any additional plates found only in our second copy of that work.
New Illustration of the sexual system of Linnaeus (1799-1807)
Copy 1. Bound in two volumes. The most complete set. 128 plates and engraved calligraphic leaves in vol. I, in vol. II.
Copy 2. Bound in one volume. Lacks most of the plates in parts 1 and 2, but has the coloured plates in part 3.
Copy 3. Bound in one volume. Has the portrait and botanical plates in parts 1 and 2, but lacks part 3.
Botanical extracts (1810)
Copy 1: Bound in four volumes, with the plates in vol. III numbered in pencil in two sequences, one for portraits and one for botanical subjects.
Copy 2: Bound in three volumes, with plates forming the third; plates numbered in pencil in a single sequence.
Copy 3 (Wisley copy): Bound in one volume; the plates are numbered in pencil in a single sequence.

Linnaeus in his Lapland Dress Copy 1: vol. I (39)
Copy 2: (15)
Artist: Hoffmann or Hoffman [sic]. Engraver: Dunkarton [copy 1]; H. Kingsbury [copy 2]. First state (copy 2): the name “Mart. Hoffmann” appears on the
Several signs of wear to the plate, especially in lettering. Second state (copy 1): the plate has been reworked by Dunkarton after Kingsbury’s death; lettering
has been made sharper; Dunkarton’s name has replaced Kingsbury’s beneath the image, but the words “H. Kingsbury sculp.” on the plinth within the plate have
been sharpened; Hoffmann’s name has been somewhat clumsily amended to “Mart. Hoffman”. Mezzotint. Monochrome in Lindley Library copies, but
