On behalf of our entire parish staff, I would like to
extend to you and your family my best wishes and
prayers for a very Blessed and Joyful Easter Season!
It is truly a wonderful season of new life, especially
here at St. Francis to celebrate with Baptisms,
Weddings and First Communions. Alleluia!
A wonderful part of our Easter Liturgies are our
beautiful flowers that decorate our church. These
flowers throughout the season are donated in
memory of many deceased loved ones. Their names
are printed in this bulletin, and I ask you to please
keep them in your prayers. I also ask that you
remember their families and friends who continue to
mourn their loss. May they be consoled in the peace
of the Risen Christ.
I want to extend my thanks to all those students and
parents in our parish school and religious education
program, who did such an outstanding job last week
on the Palm Sunday Passion Play, “What a Week
for Jesus” at the 9:00 am Family Mass. It was my
sixteenth year in leading that production, and every
year, it is a very moving experience to again relive
what Jesus went through for all of us. I really
appreciate the enthusiasm of our young folks in their
willingness to share their talents with our parish.
I also extend a great word of thanks and appreciation
to Mr. Eric Anderson and our children and adult
choirs for an “awesome” Lenten concert, that helped
us to reflect upon the Way of the Cross and their
ministry of music at our Masses throughout the
Lenten season. I really enjoy how they share their
gifts to enhance our liturgies. May they continue to
sing out praise to our God! Sing Alleluia!
I praise God for all of our ushers, lectors, Eucharistic
ministers, altar servers, and our art and environment
committee for decorating our worship spaces for
Lent and Palm Sunday, and their ministry of leading
us to experience the presence of God in our prayer
throughout Lent and into Holy Week. I can’t do it
alone, and I respect the time and efforts they put into
their ministry going beyond 100%. Well Done!

Registration for St. Francis’ 2008/2009
Religious Education Program will be held on the
following days:
Monday, March 31st 11:00 A.M. – 7:00 P.M
Tuesday, April 1 st

Wednesday, April 2 nd 11:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M.
Registration forms will be sent home with all
students the week of March 24th. We will also
have registration forms available in the back of
the Church beginning the week of March 24th. If
your child was not baptized at St. Francis you
will need to bring a copy of his/her Baptismal
record with you if you have not already done so.
You may also download a copy of the
registration form by visiting our website:

Religious Education tab.
Please register early. Children will be placed in
classes according to the date they register. If
you need to have your child attend Religious
Education classes on a particular day you
must register early.

Parents of our First Communion Children, we have

PERSONAL SAFETY
We will soon begin teaching the personal safety
curriculums, Talking About Touching, and Keeping
children Safe, in our Religious Education programs,
grades 1-5. These programs teach children skills
that will help keep them safe from dangerous or
abusive situations. The programs are divided into
three units: General Safety, Personal Safety, and
Assertiveness and Support. As most parents know,
every parish and Catholic school in the archdiocese
has been mandated to teach these personal safety
curriculums.
We will have an Information Session on March 26,
2008 at 6:30 PM in the Parish Auditorium for
parents to hear about the curriculum and see the
lessons, and ask any questions they may have.
It is no longer referred to as the “Last Rites.” If
you are preparing to go into the hospital for
surgery or a loved one may be preparing to
return home to the Lord, please let Fr. Joe know
and arrangements can be made to celebrate the
Sacrament of the Sick.

We have formed a new society here at St.
Francis called, The Saint Joseph Society of
Laborers. This society will consist of all
those who labor in the many trades that are
often needed in our parish. This society will
consist of all volunteers, who can share with
our parish their talents as painters, masons,
plumbers, electricians, and carpenters. We
have many projects that need to be
addressed, and it would be wonderful for this
Society to gather in prayer and service each
month to start accomplishing some of these
great tasks here in our own parish.
PLEASE NOTE: The next meeting of the
St. Joseph Society will be on this
Thursday, March 27, beginning at 6:30 PM
in the Parish Center Conference Room. We
will be studying plans for our church worship
space overhaul this summer, and we will be
visiting Our Lady of Grace Church in Chelsea
that night as well. Hope you can join us!

The Parish Pastoral Council and Finance
Council will be meeting on Monday, March
31, 2008 at 7:00 PM in the Parish Center
Conference Room. Members are asked to
review the Pastoral Planning Report of the
Archdiocese of Boston. Copies are available
in the Parish Office. This meeting is being
held to begin preparations for an upcoming
meeting in our Vicariate of the parishes of
Sacred Hearts, Malden, Immaculate
Conception, Malden, St. Joseph, Medford,
and St. Francis, Medford. We will be looking
at our parishes and our ministries.

There are many St. Francis Parishioners, who are
now unable to come to Church because of age or
illness. They are now confined to their homes or
nursing care facilities. Many are lonely and would
appreciate a visit. Therefore, we are looking for
anyone who would like to be involved in a wonderful
new ministry of visiting and reaching out to our
brothers and sisters. We will have an organizational
meeting on Monday, March 31 at 6:30 PM in the
Parish Center Conference Room. Please plan on
joining us.

The Boston Eucharistic Congress for College
Students and Young Adults will take place on the

Did you know that 99 percent of Catholic-school students graduate from high school? How about 97 percent
go on to college? (National Catholic Educational Association, Winter 2008) Yes, socioeconomic factors
affect this outcome and participation in college is not the same as graduation rates. While many Catholic
schools spend less per pupil in instructional cost, Catholic schools out perform their counterparts both public
and charter schools when it comes to graduation and college participation. In a recent study by the National
Center for Education Statistics (NCES), only 68 percent (Massachusetts was 74%) of public high school
students graduate. While 63 percent (Massachusetts was 69%), attended college.
A Catholic education enriches the mind, body and spirit. It prepares our children for college and life beyond
college. There are many factors that go into studies conducted by the National Catholic Educational
Association and the National Center for Education Statistics, but one fact remains the same – Catholic
Schools “light the way.”
There are many benefits to a Catholic education and in particular, one at St. Francis of Assisi School. Our
faculty are caring and dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge. Our classes are small and academically
