Lake Trout<br />

Salvelinus namaycush<br />

Quick key characteristics: The lake trout is found in cold-water habitats<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>ten prefers deep water. It has small scales, s<strong>of</strong>t fi ns with short bases,<br />

including an adipose fi n. It has a large, forward-facing mouth, a pointed<br />

snout, <strong>and</strong> its body is taller than wide.<br />

Similar species in <strong>South</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong>: other trout <strong>and</strong> salmon<br />

Identifi cation: The combination <strong>of</strong> (1) a dark gray-green body with abundant<br />

pale spots evenly distributed, (2) a relatively long, pointed tail (caudal) fi n,<br />

(3) lower fi ns sometimes with red or orange coloration <strong>and</strong> white edges, <strong>and</strong><br />

(4) relatively large jaw teeth distinguishes the lake trout from other trout <strong>and</strong><br />

salmon in <strong>South</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong>.<br />

Range: The lake trout is native to most <strong>of</strong> northern North America north <strong>of</strong><br />

the USA-Canada border <strong>and</strong> the Great Lakes. It has been introduced into<br />

Pactola <strong>and</strong> Deerfi eld reservoirs (Pennington County) <strong>and</strong> Lake Oahe.<br />

Items <strong>of</strong> interest:<br />

• The lake trout spawns during fall<br />

• Feeds primarily on other fi sh <strong>and</strong> in some circumstances predation by<br />

lake trout affects other fi sh populations<br />

• Slow growing, but can reach 40 in. <strong>and</strong> 25 lbs., rarely exceeding 15 lbs.<br />
