Quick key characteristics: The logperch is found in cool- to warm-water<br />
habitats. Its scales are moderate in size <strong>and</strong> readily visible. It has two<br />
separated <strong>and</strong> elongated dorsal fi ns, one (in front) with sharp spines instead<br />
<strong>of</strong> rays. It has two spines in the anal fi n, a forward-facing mouth <strong>of</strong> moderate<br />
size, <strong>and</strong> a pointed, elongated snout that over-hangs the lower jaw. Its body<br />
is tubular.<br />

Identifi cation: The elongated snout, yellow-olive coloration, <strong>and</strong> 15 to 25<br />
dark vertical stripes distinguish the logperch from similar <strong>South</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong> fi shes<br />
Range: The logperch is native to central <strong>and</strong> southeastern North America.<br />
In <strong>South</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong>, it is native to waters <strong>of</strong> the Big Sioux river basin where it<br />
occupies creeks, rivers, lakes, <strong>and</strong> impoundments with areas <strong>of</strong> clean s<strong>and</strong> or<br />
gravel.<br />
