Prime Directives<br />

• The idea behind the Prime Directive is similar <strong>to</strong> the Advance Directive.<br />

• In January 2000, the Prime Directive Initiative in New York State began with the vision<br />

of former consumers of children’s mental health services who are now advocates.<br />

• A group of young people, family members, professionals, and policymakers developed a<br />

draft of My Prime Directive Journal (Tenney, 2001).<br />

• This document was then presented at focus groups around New York State. These focus<br />

groups were composed of young people, family members, and professionals.<br />

• A fi nal draft was then edited and made available for distribution.<br />

• Pass around a copy of My Prime Directive Journal (Tenney, 2001).<br />
