Between 1945 and 1991 Patrick Brogan lists 97 wars, 253 coups and
revolutions, and 199 attempted significant assassinations, of which
only 12 failed. He concludes, "It is fruitless to predict where the
next calamities will arise." The sign of global warfare is
unmistakably clear!
The Sign of Global Famine
Immediately following the Lord's statement that global warfare would
precede His second coming, He said,
"There shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places"
(Matt.24:7).
In 1974 the United Nations claimed that it would eliminate hunger
within 10 years, yet the World Food Summit held at Rome on
13 November 1996 admitted that 800 million people around the world
were still classified as undernourished! That means 1 out of 8 persons
daily struggles for food.
In Africa 41% are "chronically undernourished",but the largest number
of hungry people is in Asia where the population growth is the
greatest. The number of undernourished in Asia is estimated at 500
million!
Most of China's grain (70%) is produced in the cold northern areas
where the growing season is only 4 months and crops often have to
be harvested green. Massive crop failures are always a possibility. The
industrialization of China is seeing much of its farming land taken
over for factories, and in the year 1996, 120 million rural workers found
themselves unemployed. The number is expected to increase to 200
million. Many will move to the huge cities to join the construction
workforce where they will contribute to the industrial spread and loss
of even more rural land - and food.
The 1996 World Food Summit, attended by delegates from nearly 200
nations, could only achieve a statement affirming
"the right of everyone to have access to safe and nutritious food,"
but,"no new funds will be forthcoming."
Global conflicts disrupt food production, and at the end of 1996 there
were 30 wars in progress around the world. The dislocation of millions
of people, as they flee the battle zones and end up in refugee camps,
is a major factor in producing famine.
The Guardian Weekly 2 February 1997, reporting on a meeting of the
UN Environmental Agency held in Nairobi, warned:
"Almost 3 billion people would be short of water within 50 years
