The Basics of Bible Prophecy The Times of the Gentiles (Daniel 2 & 7) Two complete outlines of the Times of the Gentiles are given in chapters 2 and 7 of the Book of Daniel. Both of these visions cover the same period of history, from the time of the Babylonian Empire to the second coming of Christ. The thing that makes this prophecy so interesting is that it is history told in advance of the events. Much of this prophecy has already been fulfilled, and today we live near the end of the Times of the Gentiles. We can look back at what was originally prophecy and see it fulfilled in the pages of history. The first vision was given to a pagan king, Nebuchadnezzar, and the second to saintly Daniel. Nebuchadnezzar, as an ungodly man of the world, would see the mighty empires of history, with their ruthless military conquests, amazing civil administrations, grand building programs, idolatrous religious systems and humanistic cultures, as something to be admired. It is most significant that Nebuchnezzar saw the procession of empires through history as a glorious image made from the precious metals of the earth, whereas Daniel saw them as four vicious beasts. The dreams show that there would be four kingdoms on earth before God sets up His kingdom over the whole earth. No doubt Nebuchnezzar would have liked to think his kingdom would endure forever, after all, prior to Nebuchadnezzar’s kingdom there had never been one kingdom that ruled over the world. Instead there had been the Assyrian and the Egyptian Empires that contended for supremacy. Hence Daniel addressed Nebuchadnezzar as the first world monarch, and said, “Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory. And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all” (Dan 2:37-38). Nebuchadnezzar’s image symbolizes not only the Babylonian Empire, but all of the Gentile powers that would dominate the world scene till the time when “one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven... his dominion is an everlasting dominion” (Dan 7:13-14).
