In May 2004 ten nations were<br />

added to the EU bringing its total<br />

population to 455 million.<br />

Negotiations are continuing with<br />

other nations. Its common<br />

currency, the Euro, will ultimately<br />

dominate world financial markets,<br />

and its economic and political<br />

influence will be second to none.<br />

Already the EU has a European<br />

parliament with a president, and<br />

its constitution was being finalized<br />

in 2004. <strong>The</strong> Schengen Agreement<br />

established in 1985 is eliminating<br />

internal borders and most<br />

countries in the EU now do not<br />

require border checks.<br />

<strong>The</strong> EU views the Mediterranean<br />

as a European Lake and has begun<br />

to establish a Free Trade Zone<br />
