In May 2004 ten nations were
added to the EU bringing its total
population to 455 million.
Negotiations are continuing with
other nations. Its common
currency, the Euro, will ultimately
dominate world financial markets,
and its economic and political
influence will be second to none.
Already the EU has a European
parliament with a president, and
its constitution was being finalized
in 2004. The Schengen Agreement
established in 1985 is eliminating
internal borders and most
countries in the EU now do not
require border checks.
The EU views the Mediterranean
as a European Lake and has begun
to establish a Free Trade Zone

have this in place by the year 2010.
This trade initiative will provide
a market of 200 million people in
the developing countries of North
Africa and the Middle East.
