Reasons for installing a whale sanctuary off Sylt and Amrum in 1999 Harbour porpoises are long term endangered in the North Sea by high bycatch rates in set nets mainly in the turbot- and codfishery (also in the plaice-, not in the sole-fishery using very low nets and a small mesh size (Vinther 1995, 1997, 1999)), by underwater noise, overfishing, toxins, disturbance by boats and collisions with high speed vessels) ASCOBANS prescribes the maintainence of favourable conditions for harbour porpoises and their living grounds Habitat (FFH) Directive prescribes the designation of harbour porpoise conservation areas (Appendix II) The region off Sylt and Amrum (and Southern Jylland) is an important living and calving ground for porpoises (Sonntag et al. 1999)
Conclusions for the Wadden Sea National Park Following the precautionary principle (despite low bycatch rates!) the region should be protected as a whale sanctuary The whale sanctuary should be included in the National Park This is only a first step. The whale sanctuary is relatively small. A North Sea wide package of protection measures is needed !
