Knot 1
6b16p Composite Barber pole formed from
TWO 3b8p knots (one in Red the other Blue).
Knot 2
3b8p
1) ---> LP1 to RP2
2) LP3 U2 to RP1
4) LP2 U5 to RP3
6) Go UNDER
LP1 O8 to RP2
2) LP3 O3 U1 O3 U1 O2 to RP1
---> Go OVER Knot 1, UNDER Knot 2
Step 3: Make the 2nd pass and ensure you
cross pass #1 the required number of times.
In this case, you go from RP2 to LP3 (the pin
designation is obscured by the paracord, but
can be seen on the right edge)
The number of times you cross the first pass
is driven by the number of times pass 1 circles
the mandrel.
Step 4: For the THIRD pass, you go UNDER
all strands as you go back to RP1
Step 5: After the FOURTH pass, where you
went OVER all strands to LP2, go UNDER all
strands to RP3
Step 6: OVER ALL from RP3 to LP 1 and
DONE
Step 7: Ready to add 2nd Strand into the
knot. Notice that ALL Red Strands going
RIGHT and BENEATH ALL Red Strands going
LEFT
Strand 2 uses pin positions in Blue/Boxes
Step 8: First pass on Strand 2 is now complete.
Notice how it will have exactly the same bight
progression as Strand 1 and hence will appear
between the passes made by Strand 1.
This makes these knots very quick to tie (follow
the pattern)
When going Left to Right, Strand 2 goes OVER
Strand 1
Step 9: Pass 2 of Strand 2 shown. Note
that when going from RIGHT to LEFT, Strand
2 passes UNDER Strand ONE and OVER
Strand 2.
This will lead to a CASA coded knot once all
passes are complete
Step 10: All passes are now done with both
Strand 1 and Strand 2. Inspect your work
and if you see an error, now is the time to
correct.
Step 11: Final step is to remove the knot
from the mandrel, place over the item to be
covered and dress/tension the knot. I
doubled the knot shown at the top of page 1.
This template will work for any 2 strand, 6 bight composite Barber Pole. Depending on cord diameter, number of
passes and number of bights, you may choose to increase/decrease the distance (shown at 4.125") between the bights
Grid for 6 Bight Composite Barber Pole
This grid is calibrated to fit around a paper towel tube (ptt). I use a ptt rather than
a toilet paper tube as I like to have something to hold onto ~ I find it easier. Stuff the ptt
with old newspaper to lend more rigidity and to provide greater hold for the push pins.
Wrapping the ptt in clear packing tape will extend the life of the mandrel.
Depending on the knot chosen, cord diameter and intended number of passes, you may
need to have a greater/lesser distance between bight boundaries. Your Mileage May Vary...
