<strong>777</strong> REVISED<br />
<strong>the</strong> Eld <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> All-Fa<strong>the</strong>r. See <strong>Liber</strong> 418 in The Equinox, I, 5.<br />
24. Mars, as Ruler <strong>of</strong> Scorpio. Mors, because <strong>of</strong> ATU XIII.<br />
25. Diana, as bearing bow and arrows. Iris, because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rainbow.<br />
26. Vesta is here attributed because <strong>of</strong> Capricorn being <strong>the</strong> secret<br />
flame. The o<strong>the</strong>r gods refer to <strong>the</strong> erect phallus.<br />
28. Juno, Lady <strong>of</strong> Air. Æolus, God <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Winds. The month <strong>of</strong><br />
February, when <strong>the</strong> Sun is in Aquarius, was traditionally sacred to Juno.<br />
29. Neptune, because Pisces is a watery sign.<br />
COLUMN XXXVIII: ANIMALS, REAL AND IMAGINARY<br />
0. The Dragon represents Draco connected with Nuit in <strong>the</strong><br />
Heaven; Ananta, <strong>the</strong> great serpent which surrounds <strong>the</strong> Universe. It<br />
devours its own tail, <strong>the</strong>reby reducing it to Zero.<br />
1. The Swan as representing Aum. See <strong>Liber</strong> LXV, Cap. II, 17-25.<br />
See also The Book <strong>of</strong> Lies, Cap. XVII. The Hawk pertains to Ke<strong>the</strong>r, as<br />
poised in <strong>the</strong> e<strong>the</strong>r and beholding all things. Remember that Ke<strong>the</strong>r is<br />
primarily <strong>the</strong> individual point <strong>of</strong> view. The Soul beholds all things and<br />
changes <strong>the</strong> place according to its going. Thus in <strong>the</strong> Egyptian tradition<br />
<strong>the</strong> Hawk is <strong>the</strong> symbol <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> highest type <strong>of</strong> Godhead.<br />
3. The Bee is <strong>the</strong> traditional attribution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Yoni.<br />
4. Again, traditional. It is probably connected with <strong>the</strong> erect<br />
phallus <strong>of</strong> Amoun. The Unicorn is also Jupiterean, as connected with<br />
<strong>the</strong> horse <strong>of</strong> Sagittarius.<br />
5. The Basilisk represents Geburah on account <strong>of</strong> its power <strong>of</strong><br />
slaying with <strong>the</strong> flame <strong>of</strong> its glance.<br />
6. The Phoenix on account <strong>of</strong> its symbolism <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 5°=68 grade.<br />
Lion, as <strong>the</strong> typical animal <strong>of</strong> Sol. Child, as Vau <strong>of</strong> Tetragrammaton.<br />
The Spider is particularly sacred to Tiphereth. It is written that she<br />
“taketh hold with her hands and is in kings’ palaces.”* (The most<br />
characteristic title <strong>of</strong> Tiphereth is <strong>the</strong> “Palace <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> King.”) She has six<br />
legs† and is in <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> her web exactly as Tiphereth is in <strong>the</strong> centre<br />
* [Proverbs, XXX. 28.]<br />
† [Only because you’ve pulled two <strong>of</strong>f, Aleister. On <strong>the</strong> Kircher Tree <strong>of</strong> Life, <strong>the</strong>re<br />
are eight paths radiating from Tiphareth. — T.S.]
