<strong>777</strong> REVISED<br />

COLUMN XL: PRECIOUS STONES<br />

0. These attributions are somewhat bold. The Star Sapphire refers<br />

to Nuit and <strong>the</strong> Black Diamond to <strong>the</strong> idea <strong>of</strong> NOX—Zero. It is<br />

invisible yet contains light and structure in itself.<br />

1. The Diamond is white brilliance; it is pure carbon, <strong>the</strong><br />

foundation <strong>of</strong> all living structure. The atomic weight is 12, <strong>the</strong> number<br />

<strong>of</strong> Hua, <strong>the</strong> title <strong>of</strong> Ke<strong>the</strong>r (but this is a reference to <strong>the</strong> Zodiac which<br />

makes <strong>the</strong> connection with Zero, on <strong>the</strong> one hand, and 2, on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r).<br />

2. The Star Ruby represents <strong>the</strong> male energy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Creator Star.<br />

Turquoise suggests Mazloth, so also does <strong>the</strong> Star Sapphire, but this<br />

would be <strong>the</strong> sphere <strong>of</strong> Chokmah not its positive attribution.<br />

3. The Star Sapphire suggests <strong>the</strong> expanse <strong>of</strong> night with <strong>the</strong> Star<br />

appearing in <strong>the</strong> midst <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong>. Note that this light is not in <strong>the</strong> stone<br />

itself but is due to <strong>the</strong> internal structure. The doctrine is that <strong>the</strong> stars<br />

are formed in <strong>the</strong> body n<strong>of</strong> night by virtue <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> night by<br />

<strong>the</strong> impact fo <strong>the</strong> energy <strong>of</strong> a higher plane. The Pearl is referred to<br />

Binal on account <strong>of</strong> its being <strong>the</strong> typical stone <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sea. It is formed<br />

by concentric spheres <strong>of</strong> hard brilliant substance, <strong>the</strong> centre being a<br />

particle <strong>of</strong> dust. Thus, that dust which is all that remains <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Exempt<br />

Adept after he has crossed <strong>the</strong> Abyss, is gradually surrounded by sphere<br />

after sphere <strong>of</strong> shining splendour, so that he vbecomes a fitting<br />

ornament for <strong>the</strong> bosom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Great Mo<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

4. Lapiz Lazuli is <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> blue violet <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> highest form <strong>of</strong> Jupiter.<br />

The specks in it may perhaps be taken to represent those particles <strong>of</strong><br />

dust referred to above. The Amethyst is <strong>the</strong> violet <strong>of</strong> Jupiter. It is <strong>the</strong><br />

traditional stone <strong>of</strong> episcopal rank. Its legendary virtue <strong>of</strong> protecting its<br />

bearer from intoxication indicates its value in lustration. It is <strong>the</strong> purity<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Exempt Adept which destroys for him <strong>the</strong> illusion or drunkenness<br />

<strong>of</strong> existence, and <strong>the</strong>refore enables him to take <strong>the</strong> great leap into <strong>the</strong><br />

Abyss. The Sapphire pertains to Chesed because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> blue <strong>of</strong> water<br />

and <strong>of</strong> Venus (Daleth = 4) in <strong>the</strong> King Scale (Column XV) and <strong>of</strong><br />

Jupiter in <strong>the</strong> Queen Scale (Column XVI).
