EXPLANATIONS OF THE ATTRIBUTIONS<br />

represents Phallum Ejaculentem. Chokmah being pre-eminiently <strong>the</strong><br />

causer <strong>of</strong> change.<br />

Again, Chokmah is <strong>the</strong> Logos, <strong>the</strong> messenger, <strong>the</strong> transmitter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

influence <strong>of</strong> Ke<strong>the</strong>r, and this is shown, in a lower mode, in <strong>the</strong> Sephira<br />

Hod. He is also implied in <strong>the</strong> 11th path, for <strong>the</strong> Fool also transmits <strong>the</strong><br />

essence <strong>of</strong> Ke<strong>the</strong>r. He is in <strong>the</strong> 12th path as <strong>the</strong> Magician, Mercury, in<br />

<strong>the</strong> 16th as <strong>the</strong> Magus <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Eternal, in <strong>the</strong> 17th as <strong>the</strong> Oracle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Mighty Gods, and in <strong>the</strong> 20th as <strong>the</strong> Prophet <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Eternal, <strong>the</strong> Magus<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Voice <strong>of</strong> Power.* The idea <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> message is also implied in <strong>the</strong><br />

13th and 25th paths, perhaps even in <strong>the</strong> 32nd. The 18th path, too,<br />

conveys a certain quintessence although not in a Mercurial manner.<br />

And it is just <strong>the</strong>se subtle distinctions which are vital to <strong>the</strong> proper<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tree <strong>of</strong> Life.<br />

The idea <strong>of</strong> Binah is even more complicated. Her darkness is<br />

referred to Saturn. As <strong>the</strong> Great Sea, she gives her nature to all those<br />

paths which contain <strong>the</strong> idea <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> element <strong>of</strong> Water. Binah is<br />

connected with <strong>the</strong> Azoth, not only because <strong>the</strong> Azoth is <strong>the</strong> lower<br />

Moon, but because <strong>the</strong> Azoth partakes also <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Saturnian character,<br />

being <strong>the</strong> metal lead in one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Alchemical systems. She is also <strong>the</strong><br />

Great Mo<strong>the</strong>r. She is Venus and she is <strong>the</strong> Moon, and in each aspect<br />

she sheds her influence into very various paths. We need not here go<br />

fur<strong>the</strong>r into <strong>the</strong> cases <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Sephiroth.<br />

Now from a practical point <strong>of</strong> view <strong>of</strong> consturcting <strong>the</strong>se tables, it<br />

will evidently be very difficult in many cases to choose on which path<br />

to place any given idea. It is obvious, for instance, that <strong>the</strong> Lotus—<br />

which is also a Wheel—might be attributed to any path in respect ot its<br />

femininity. In some cases it has been necessary to give several<br />

attributions to <strong>the</strong> same thing. Observe in particular <strong>the</strong> 12 different<br />

aspects <strong>of</strong> Isis. The student must not attempt to use this book as if it<br />

were Molesworth. The whole idea <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se tables is to supply him with<br />

very varied information, in such a form that he can build up in himself a<br />

scheme <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Universe in an alphabet, at once literary and<br />

* [These are <strong>Golden</strong> <strong>Dawn</strong> titles <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tarot Trumps popularly known as <strong>the</strong><br />

Hierophant, <strong>the</strong> Lovers and <strong>the</strong> Hermit respectively. See Col. CLXXX. — T.S.]
