Keeping an eye
on nutrition
We all know that good
nutrition is synonymous
with good health, and
there’s a huge body of
evidence suggesting that
eating right is good for
your eyes as well.
Many studies have linked
antioxidant vitamins with
helping to maintain healthy
cells and tissues in the eye,
but increasingly research
is suggesting that an
Green means go!
The top natural sources
of lutein include:
n Kale
n Spinach
n green beans
n Broccoli
n eggs
2
antioxidant called lutein,
and the essential omega-3
fatty acids, could also be
helpful.
The lutein factor
You’ve heard about eating a
healthy dose of carrots for
good eyesight, but did you
know that greens could be
even better?
Eating greens to improve
your vision may not just
be an old wives’ tale. An
increasing body of evidence
highlights the benefits of
eating lutein – a carotenoid
found in dark green leafy
vegetables – for good eye
health.
Lutein is highly
concentrated in the macula
– the area of the eye which
is responsible for the sharp
central vision.
The lutein is
deposited in this area
through the lutein
we consume as part
of our diet. In the eye,
lutein is used to filter
harmful blue light and
protect the macula from
free-radical damage.
InSight
The Lutein Information Bureau
suggests a minimum intake of
6-10 mg per day of lutein is
necessary to reap its health
benefits– this is equivalent to
eating a mixing bowl full of fresh
spinach every single day! If you
can’t incorporate this much into
your daily regime, consider taking
a good quality supplement such
as Ocuvite.
common, affecting 90% of
“Dry AMD has affected every area of my
but until I was diagnosed, I’d never even
When did you hear that
your mum had AMD?
She was diagnosed in her
60s but refused to let it get
her down. I know it was
frustrating that as her sight
deteriorated mum couldn’t
do as much of the sewing and
embroidery that she loved,
but she always remained very
physically active. She loved
going on cruises and would
win competitions onboard for
her accomplishments – even
in her mid 60s she could leap
off tables straight into the
splits!
Did you know what
AMD was?
no, I’d never heard of it. I
knew that our eyesight often
deteriorates as we grow older,
but I wasn’t aware that AMd
was so common, and that in
some cases it could also lead
to blindness.
4
Eyes on
the future
AMD can be hereditary
and is more common in
women – especially if they
have blonde hair and
blue eyes. Has that made
you concerned about
your own sight?
naturally. I never wore
sunglasses regularly in the
past – I always saw them as a
fashion accessory rather than
a health necessity. That’s a
big regret, as I’m much more
aware now of the damage
that the sun can do to our
eyes. I’ve never smoked,
which is fortunate as that’s
been linked in a number of
studies to the development
of the condition.
during my research I heard
about ocuvite - which helps
maintain good eye health -
and now I make sure I take
it regularly.
Julie Peasgood, 52, reveals why
her mother’s Age-related Macular
degeneration diagnosis has made
her safeguard her own sight
I also have regular eye
check-ups. The health of my
eyes has become a priority
now in a way that it wasn’t
before. over the years I’ve
had to accept that I need to
wear glasses for reading, but
otherwise my eyes are in
good health.
Do you think there is
enough information
available on AMD?
no. I’d never heard of the
condition, so by the time
she was diagnosed, it was
too late to make much
difference for my mum. If I’d
known what I know now,
I’d certainly have made sure
she took a high potency
supplement. I’d also have
given her Popeye-sized
platefuls of spinach! As with
all health issues, prevention
is better than cure.
how his AMD diagnosis
changed his outlook John Acres, 61, Surrey
“I fi rst noticed a problem
sitting at home one evening.
As the light began to fade
I closed one eye and to my
surprise I noticed that the
vision in my open eye was
distorted and cloudy.
“I was really frightened and
booked an appointment with
my optician straight away. He
diagnosed me with wet AMD. I’d
never heard of AMD before, and
was scared about what the
diagnosis meant - I thought it
would simply be a downward
spiral towards blindness.
“I sought the advice of my optician
who advised me to see an eye
consultant in the NHS - an expert
in the fi eld. He quickly advised
me of the best course to follow – a
series of three Anti-VEGF injections
in my bad eye.
“The injections were a success,
and the hospital recommended I
take a nutritional supplement to
help prevent further deterioration
of the macula. I’m delighted
that since taking the supplement,
I haven’t seen any further
deterioration in the quality of
my vision.
“I would urge people who have
any concerns about their vision to
get in touch with an eye specialist.
Don’t delay in the hope that the
situation will just rectify itself.
But even if the news is bad, don’t
to be optimistic.”
Too young
for reading
glasses?
If you’re having trouble
reading things up
close - and perhaps
you are holding this
at arms length for a
clearer focus, it’s likely
you’re experiencing
presbyopia. A naturally
occurring vision
condition, which starts
to affect most people in
their forties.
6
Eye on the
facts…
Presbyopia
despite its prevalence, over
40% of people over 40 are
unaware of it:
n 80% find reading medicine and
food labels a struggle
n 65% find close-up work like
sewing or craftwork difficult
n 52% find using a PC problematic
Astigmatism doesn’t
have to hold you back!
Astigmatism is a common
condition and is usually
present from birth. It
occurs when the front
part of the eye, the cornea,
is not a regular
symmetrical spherical
shape - like a football.
Instead, its shape is more
like that of a rugby ball
- longer in one direction
than the other.
Because the cornea is an
irregular shape, the eye
has difficulty focusing
properly.
When this happens, the
person’s vision may be
blurred and the individual
may struggle to focus or
read. They may also
complain of tired or dry
eyes, and headaches.
If the thought of having to
carry around glasses
everywhere sounds onerous
or if you are self-conscious
about being seen needing
glasses when out and about,
you might be interested to
know that with multi-focal
contact lenses, such as Bausch
& Lomb PureVision ® , you’ll
be able to see clearly at all
distances. This means that
you can continue to lead a full
and active lifestyle and no-one
need know you are wearing
contact lenses!
Correction is often
offered through
spectacles. However in
most cases, astigmatism
can be corrected by
wearing specially-designed
contact lenses such as
SofLens® daily disposable
Let’s get
Motivated!
Studies show that exercise is
not only good for your overall
health and well being, but
great for your eyes as well!
And if that’s not enough
motivation, trainer to the
stars, Matt Roberts has
three easy steps to help
keep you on the straight
and narrow…
I would strongly suggest that you
thoroughly plan your goals for the
next few months - fix targets to
achieve on a weekly basis.
Give yourself small, attainable
goals. Rather than thinking
about losing two stone, you
are thinking about losing two
stone by your summer holiday,
but, more importantly, you are
focusing on losing two pounds
this week.
List all the reasons why you have
failed in the past, e.g. you like
chocolate, you hate running, you
love alcohol, you get stressed with
the kids and eat carbohydrates!
Pick off the three things that
you think are the easiest to
change, and it is these three
things that form your first
week’s short term goals.
It’s amazing how quickly
the long term goal seems
more attainable - and really
not quite as difficult as you
think - when you focus on
the short term.
Trying to change too much
too quick can be fatal, so
don’t bite off more than
you can chew and you will
benefit enormously.
BROW BEATING
Shavata Singh, queen of the eyebrows and guru to
When choosing the perfect
eyebrow colouring, Shavata
suggests opting for two shades
darker than your hair colour for
optimum results.
Eye
on the facts
Eyebrow threading
n Threading is an increasingly popular,
natural and precision way to remove
unwanted hair from the brows
n Thread is twisted and rolled along the
surface of the skin, entwining the
hairs and removing them at the root
n It’s considered less painful than other
shaping methods as it targets
individual hairs with minimum
skin irritation
What is eye brow
threading?
It’s a hair removal technique
using a cotton thread that is
manipulated in a way that pulls
hair out from the root.
depending on the technician
this can be done in a very
do’s and don’t of shaping
n Always pluck in natural light, and only
little by little – this will help to ensure
that you don’t go overboard
n Never pluck above the brow - this is
your natural shape and tweezing this
area will mean it never grows back
the same
n Use a hand mirror and a big mirror
when shaping eyebrows – the hand
mirror for close up plucking, and the
large one to check that your brows
are even
Shavata’s guide to arches to adore
After the bold and daring
eyebrows of last season,
to be on trend in ‘09 your
brows should be full yet
perfectly groomed… but be
warned, full does not
translate as bushy.
“The shape you want is
strong and thick, but still
arched. A straight thick
brow can make you look
surly and boyish, where as
an arch adds character and
gives a sensual look to the
eyes,” says Shavata.
To find your natural arch
brush your brows upwards
with a brow brush & comb
and study the shape: the
highest point should peak
at the outer edge of your iris
and the brow should taper
off at the outer corner of
your eye.
getting the balance right
is essential. Shavata says:
Shavata’s Expert Eyebrow Kit
Brow Brush & Comb (£6.50)
Eyebrow Pencil (£7.00)
Brow Tamer (£13.00)
“never pluck out the very
long hairs, as these give your
brows shape - if you alter the
natural shape your brows
will be out of sync with your
bone structure. Eyebrows
should enhance your natural
beauty not distort it. Pluck
below the arch, between the
brows and tidy up all the
stray hairs but leave the rest.”
But what if you have already
spent years over-plucking?
unfortunately for some your
eyebrows may never regain
their natural shape so you
need to use an eyebrow
pencil. natural is the key
word this season, thin
caterpillar like eyebrows
have never been en vogue
and never will be!
Finally to control any
wayward hairs, smooth your
brows with a brow gel and
comb them in the direction
you want.
Curly girl eyelash curlers
Using eyelash curlers for
2. Hold the curler open and place your upper
lashes onto the lower pad
3. Slowly, close the curler and count to fi ve
4. Gently open the curler and remove your
lashes from the mouth
5. Follow with a coat or two of volumising
mascara for dramatic effect!
Eye
can...
steal the show!
Gok’s top tips for specs wearers
Style guru Gok Wan knows that glasses
are a fabulous accessory and not just an
optical necessity.
“Glasses come in so many different shapes and
sizes, which can dramatically change your look.
The secret is to make the most of your best
features and play down your least using a
combination of colour and shape. Frames, colours
and styles can also reflect your personality so
never be afraid to experiment.”
If you’re a specs wearer, or just want to change
your appearance with a pair of glasses, Gok has
seven top tips to keep your look sin-free:
1. Frames should be no higher than the line of your
eyebrows. The lower edge should not sit on your
cheeks - even when you smile - and the frames no
wider than the width of your face at the temples
2. A thin or clear bridge can add width between
close-set eyes and a coloured bridge will make
wide-set eyes appear closer together
3. Oval frames are best for a square face as they
soften the jaw line. Avoid thin, angular styles and
those with colour emphasis on the bottom rim
4. Angular or geometric styles are best for a round
face. They draw attention to the top half of
your face
5. An oval face looks great in most styles! Be
adventurous and try modern geometric shapes,
which are stylish and fashionable
6. A long face with high cheekbones requires wide
frames with a strong top line. Avoid small, square
shapes – opt for a style with all over colour
7. A heart-shaped face can wear slender, rounded or
square styles without decorative detail on the
temples. Avoid styles which are wider at the top,
these will reflect the face shape rather than
balance it
