• Once at Soda Creek he was<br />

: Charlie Hoy went to work at<br />

In time, he began trad<strong>in</strong>g<br />
• with <strong>the</strong> Indians . When money<br />
: became scarce he used tokens<br />
' uhich <strong>the</strong> Indians would use<br />
; to buy <strong>the</strong>ir goods <strong>in</strong> his store<br />
only. The fur market was<br />
very bad. To get <strong>the</strong> best<br />
prices possible, Hoy shipped<br />
his furs all <strong>the</strong> way to St.<br />
Louis, but this way was very<br />
time-consum<strong>in</strong>g. It was a long<br />
ways for <strong>the</strong> cheque to come<br />
back.<br />
Gett<strong>in</strong>g freight up <strong>the</strong> river<br />
was often impossible too, as<br />
• <strong>the</strong> Indians refused to use <strong>the</strong><br />
• scow past Oct. 15, <strong>in</strong> case<br />
: <strong>the</strong>y'became trapped upstream<br />
: by a frozen river.<br />
At this po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> Mr. Hoy's<br />
life ano<strong>the</strong>r change was necessary<br />
as his capital was small<br />
to- rema<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess.<br />
He closed up shop temporarily<br />
<strong>and</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>ed a survey<br />
party. The survey was for a<br />
st retch of <strong>the</strong> C. N. R.<br />
from Pr<strong>in</strong>ce George to<br />
Edmonton. An Kdmontou parly<br />
worked towards Tele •leune<br />
Cache <strong>and</strong> back to Edmonton<br />
while Hoy <strong>and</strong> his fellow<br />
workers surveyed <strong>the</strong> section<br />
between Pr<strong>in</strong>ce George <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Carb,o.<br />
He enjoyed <strong>the</strong> work dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
(he summer <strong>and</strong> remembers it<br />
was pleasant travell<strong>in</strong>g by<br />
canoe<br />
Hut <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter!<br />
Hoy asked for transportation-<br />
<strong>and</strong> got a dog team.<br />
"You walk• -supplies ride!"<br />
Mr. Hoy recalled. It took<br />
two days travell<strong>in</strong>g to make it<br />
back to camp His first job<br />
on <strong>the</strong> survey was chopp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />
this lie had to do on snowshoes<br />
He hail never used an<br />
axe before <strong>and</strong> had never worn<br />
snow shoes ei<strong>the</strong>r.<br />
"These weren't like <strong>the</strong><br />
suowshoes n o w a d a y s, <strong>the</strong>y<br />
were flat <strong>and</strong> round-like a fry<br />
pan", he says.<br />
Often <strong>the</strong> transit l<strong>in</strong>e took<br />
him through thorn bushes. It<br />
was terrible hard work. The<br />
boss. Mr. Graham, made his<br />
rounds about every two weeks.<br />
Hoy told Mr. Graham how he<br />
wanted to quit even though he<br />
needed <strong>the</strong> money. The boss<br />
reassured him he was do<strong>in</strong>g<br />
f<strong>in</strong>e Hut <strong>the</strong>re was a man<br />
named Al who never tired of<br />
(eas<strong>in</strong>g Hoy. compet<strong>in</strong>g with<br />
him <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir work <strong>and</strong> pok<strong>in</strong>g<br />
fun. The next time <strong>the</strong> boss<br />
made his rounds, Hoy told of .<br />
<strong>the</strong> contest between him <strong>and</strong> Al.<br />
To defend Hoy, <strong>the</strong> boss suggested<br />
a chopp<strong>in</strong>g contest between<br />
himself <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> almighty<br />
Al. When Al was beaten, <strong>the</strong>.<br />
boss told him not t. ..-ase Hoy<br />
anymore; he never did, <strong>and</strong><br />
Hoy was happy.<br />
C. D. was eventually given an<br />
easier job as a cha<strong>in</strong>man. His<br />
job was to follow <strong>the</strong> transit<br />
man with steel pa<strong>in</strong>ted poles.<br />
He <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> transit man would<br />
have signals back <strong>and</strong> forth<br />
so <strong>the</strong> pole could be placed <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> exact spot.<br />
When Mr. Graham came on<br />
his rounds <strong>the</strong> next time <strong>and</strong><br />
asked how Hoy liked his job.<br />
Hoy told him. "Now, I am too<br />
cold, this job--you don't move<br />
around enough".<br />
And so he took st<strong>ill</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />
job. This time he was to place<br />
a balsam stake every 100<br />
feet. In between times he had<br />
to f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> sticks <strong>and</strong> cut <strong>the</strong>m<br />
for stakes. Hoy remembers<br />
how, when it was so cold <strong>and</strong><br />
quiet with <strong>the</strong> survey crew,<br />
he could hear noth<strong>in</strong>g but <strong>the</strong><br />
trees crack. When <strong>the</strong> eight<br />
feet of snow melted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
spr<strong>in</strong>g. Hoy found out how<br />
easily he fell through.<br />
Next, <strong>the</strong> boss asked if he<br />
could take over cook<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong><br />
crew. Hoy had experience<br />
cook<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a hotel <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a <strong>and</strong><br />
was sure even though <strong>the</strong>re<br />
were 22 men here to feed,<br />
that he was able--at least <strong>the</strong>y<br />
couldn't be too fussy. He used<br />
a 50 Lb. sack of flour every<br />
day.<br />
The time came after 20<br />
months of work for <strong>the</strong> survey<br />
crew to move on. Hoy was<br />
offered fare to Vancouver with<br />
<strong>the</strong> rest of <strong>the</strong> crew but would<br />
have to f<strong>in</strong>d work for himself<br />
once he arrived. Bui Hoy had<br />
not forgotten his st<strong>ill</strong>-recent<br />
experience with Vancouver <strong>and</strong><br />
had no wish to return.<br />
It was about 1908 when he<br />
came back to <strong>Quesnel</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>n went on to his orig<strong>in</strong>al<br />
dest<strong>in</strong>ation,-- Barkerv<strong>ill</strong>e.<br />
He found work <strong>in</strong> a m<strong>in</strong>e<br />
which paid $2.75 per day. However,<br />
he had to board out <strong>and</strong> buy<br />
rubber gloves <strong>and</strong> boots as<br />
well. There was no o<strong>the</strong>r job<br />
to be had so he made <strong>the</strong> best<br />
of his situation.<br />

ASK ANN LANDERS<br />
<strong>Let</strong> <strong>babies</strong> <strong>cry</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>church'</strong><br />
Dear Ann L<strong>and</strong>ers: I am<br />
sick <strong>and</strong> tired of read<strong>in</strong>g letters<br />
from m<strong>in</strong>isters <strong>and</strong> parishioners<br />
who compla<strong>in</strong> about<br />
children <strong>cry</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> church. No<br />
wonder our places of worship<br />
are half empty. The clergymen<br />
have made <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r of<br />
a <strong>cry</strong><strong>in</strong>g child feel as if she<br />
has committed some terrible'<br />
crime.<br />
To me. a child's voice is<br />
music. --- whe<strong>the</strong>r he is<br />
speak<strong>in</strong>g, s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g or <strong>cry</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />
The child who cries <strong>in</strong> church<br />
is express<strong>in</strong>g someth<strong>in</strong>g, it<br />
is normal. For <strong>the</strong> lffe of me I<br />
cannot underst<strong>and</strong> why anyone<br />
would f<strong>in</strong>d this annoy<strong>in</strong>g. Much<br />
more distress<strong>in</strong>g, to me, at<br />
least, is <strong>the</strong> adult who snores<br />
dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> sermon. If you feel<br />
as 1 do please help me <strong>in</strong> my<br />
crusade. ---Committee olOne<br />
Dear Committee: What crusade?<br />
To promote <strong>the</strong> acceptance<br />
of <strong>cry</strong><strong>in</strong>g children <strong>in</strong><br />
church? Sorry, I can't go along.<br />
Cry<strong>in</strong>g is <strong>in</strong>deed a normal<br />
function, but like o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
normal functions, <strong>the</strong>re is a<br />
time <strong>and</strong> a place for it. A<br />
child who cries <strong>in</strong> church is<br />
a nuisance to <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>ister <strong>and</strong><br />
to those who carnotohear him.<br />
I telephoned five clergymen<br />
<strong>and</strong> asked <strong>the</strong>m which <strong>the</strong>y prefer,<br />
a <strong>cry</strong><strong>in</strong>g child or a snor<strong>in</strong>g<br />
adult. Four clergyman preferred<br />
<strong>the</strong> snor<strong>in</strong>g adult. Dr.<br />
Preston Bradley of <strong>the</strong><br />
People's Church of Chicago<br />
prefers <strong>the</strong> <strong>cry</strong><strong>in</strong>g baby. He<br />
said, "You can't do a th<strong>in</strong>g<br />
about a snor<strong>in</strong>g adult. The<br />
<strong>cry</strong><strong>in</strong>g child, however, was<br />
brought <strong>in</strong> by a mo<strong>the</strong>r who<br />
can carry him out."<br />

graphy <strong>and</strong> made more money<br />
on <strong>the</strong> side from his pictures<br />
than his wages from <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e.<br />
He quit Barkerv<strong>ill</strong>e <strong>in</strong> 1910<br />
<strong>and</strong> started Hoy's Department<br />
Store <strong>in</strong> <strong>Quesnel</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1914. When<br />
The First World War broke out<br />
<strong>the</strong>re was no bus<strong>in</strong>ess at all.<br />
He decided <strong>the</strong>re was no po<strong>in</strong>t<br />
<strong>in</strong> leav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Quesnel</strong> aga<strong>in</strong>--<br />
at least he had a place to sleep<br />
<strong>and</strong> besides money was not<br />
easier to f<strong>in</strong>d elsewhere.<br />
There was lots of labor to be<br />
had, but he couldn't afford<br />
any wages.<br />
In 1917 <strong>in</strong> February, Hoy<br />
hitched up two horses <strong>and</strong> a<br />
buggy (which was placed onto<br />
a sleigh). He was headed to<br />
<strong>the</strong> coast <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n by boat to<br />
Ch<strong>in</strong>a to br<strong>in</strong>g back a wife.<br />
The snow was so deep that<br />
<strong>the</strong> horses broke through to<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir bellies. At one po<strong>in</strong>t<br />
when 'Hoy <strong>and</strong> a travell<strong>in</strong>g<br />
companion could go no fur<strong>the</strong>r,<br />
<strong>the</strong> horses had to be dug out.<br />
Hoy left his buggy <strong>in</strong> Ashcroft<br />
<strong>and</strong> took his horse to a<br />
rancher whom he asked to keep<br />
<strong>and</strong> care for <strong>the</strong> animal until<br />
Hoy returned <strong>in</strong> several<br />
months.<br />
The months passed <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
day came when Hoy stepped off<br />
<strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> Ashcroft, back<br />
from Ch<strong>in</strong>a a married man.<br />
He found his horse <strong>in</strong> excellent<br />
condition. However,<br />
his new bride had never seen<br />
a horse <strong>and</strong> had never ridden<br />
<strong>in</strong> a buggy.<br />
At one po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> long trip<br />
back, Hoy was about to feed <strong>the</strong><br />
horse some oats. He was a<br />
tricky horse--<strong>and</strong> without any<br />
consideration tfi its master-it<br />
took off--buggv-wife- <strong>and</strong><br />
all.<br />
Hoy was left on <strong>the</strong> ground <strong>in</strong><br />
a cloud of dust. He ran,<br />
<strong>and</strong> ran, try<strong>in</strong>g to catch up, but<br />
of course it was impossible<br />
on foot. The horse ran about<br />
five miles before it f<strong>in</strong>ally<br />
tired out. Mrs. Hoy had not<br />
even had <strong>the</strong> re<strong>in</strong>s, although<br />
her husb<strong>and</strong> told her it was<br />
better that she didn't s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />
she hadn't any idea how to<br />
use <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
She was badly shaken.<br />
When Hoy caught up lo her,<br />
lie told her how lucky .she was<br />
not to have been <strong>in</strong>jured, lit;<br />
tied up <strong>the</strong> horse <strong>and</strong> flagged<br />
down a Model T Ford com<strong>in</strong>g<br />
along <strong>the</strong> road, which was <strong>the</strong>n<br />
a regular passenger service<br />
from Ashcroft to \ }n. He<br />
rode back to camp a. en paid<br />
<strong>the</strong> car to take him back aga<strong>in</strong><br />
to his horse ra<strong>the</strong>r than walk<br />
that whole distance aga<strong>in</strong>.<br />
They were a very happy •<br />
couple to at last arrive to •<br />
<strong>the</strong> comforts on <strong>the</strong>ir own •<br />
home. The war was over, j<br />
bus<strong>in</strong>ess was great. :<br />
When a coal oil lamp was:<br />
upset. Hoy's room<strong>in</strong>g house;<br />
caught fire <strong>and</strong> was burned:<br />
to <strong>the</strong> ground. He had hoped to :<br />
use it for storage later. •<br />
Hoy's present home on Bar-low<br />
Avenue, became <strong>the</strong>,first •<br />
stucco house <strong>in</strong> <strong>Quesnel</strong>, <strong>in</strong> j:<br />
1934. He says when he built:<br />
<strong>the</strong> house, "everyone say-:<br />

money <strong>in</strong> 1934. The highest :•<br />
wage for a carpenter was 50C :•<br />
an hour <strong>and</strong> for <strong>the</strong>designer 75 :j<br />
cents per hour. The basement •:<br />
. was dug with scrapers pulled •:<br />
by horses <strong>and</strong> f<strong>ill</strong>ed by men. j:<br />
Around 1938 Mr. Hoy built :|:<br />

Over <strong>the</strong> years Mr. Hoy •:<br />

Do you read fairy tales to<br />
your young children?<br />
As I was read<strong>in</strong>g, Red Rid<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Hood, I stopped; <strong>the</strong>re was<br />
someth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> words "The<br />
wolf gobbled little Red Rid<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Hood's gr<strong>and</strong>mo<strong>the</strong>r all up-<strong>the</strong>n<br />
jumped <strong>in</strong>to her bed,<br />
pulled her nightcap over his<br />
head, <strong>and</strong> lay <strong>the</strong>ir wait<strong>in</strong>g for<br />
Red Rid<strong>in</strong>g Hood", that just<br />
strikes me as not fitt<strong>in</strong>g for<br />
a bedtime story.<br />
How about some more examples?<br />
"The three bears chased<br />
Goldilocks <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> woods <strong>and</strong><br />
she never returned." or "Have<br />
a bite of my rosy red apple,<br />
rny dear," cackled <strong>the</strong> old<br />
wicked witch; or "You must'<br />
br<strong>in</strong>g me your prettiest<br />
daughter or I w<strong>ill</strong> have your<br />
head," replied <strong>the</strong> beast.<br />
And here's a d<strong>ill</strong>y- "Stick<br />
out your f<strong>in</strong>ger, little boy, so<br />
I can see if you're ready for<br />
<strong>the</strong> oven."<br />
This topic came to my attention<br />
while I was read<strong>in</strong>g<br />
such a story. In <strong>the</strong> midst ofit<br />
I found myself chang<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
text of <strong>the</strong> story so that <strong>the</strong><br />
kids wouldn't have nightmares.<br />
A part could be picked from<br />
every fairy tale; its only value<br />
be<strong>in</strong>g for horror content.<br />
I have s<strong>in</strong>ce discarded<br />
fairy tales as bedtime stories<br />
<strong>in</strong> favor of <strong>the</strong> "Cat <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Hat" or some o<strong>the</strong>r ligh<strong>the</strong>arted<br />
fancy.<br />
I can remember, as a young<br />
child myself, hav<strong>in</strong>g had<br />
dreams about bears <strong>and</strong><br />

Society wants pottery workshop<br />
The need for a centrally located<br />
art workshop was<br />
po<strong>in</strong>ted out at <strong>the</strong> March 1<br />
meet<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Quesnel</strong> Art<br />
Society. Interest <strong>in</strong> pottery<br />
particularly, has po<strong>in</strong>ted to<br />
<strong>the</strong> need for such a workshop.<br />
However, attempts to acquire<br />
such a build<strong>in</strong>g have been<br />
fruitless. The subject is<br />
st<strong>ill</strong> under <strong>in</strong>vestigation <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Society would appreciate<br />
any suggestions.<br />
The Centennial .'71 Committee<br />
of <strong>Quesnel</strong> has asked <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Quesnel</strong> Arts Council to arrange<br />
an exhibition of photographs<br />
"Portraits of Nature"<br />
by W<strong>ill</strong>iam Dukur, which<br />
w<strong>ill</strong> be <strong>in</strong> <strong>Quesnel</strong> March 23<br />
<strong>and</strong> 24 at <strong>the</strong> Helen Dixon<br />
School. Art Club members w<strong>ill</strong><br />
be assist<strong>in</strong>g Mr. Dukur <strong>in</strong><br />
sett<strong>in</strong>g up his exhibition. Invited<br />
guests w<strong>ill</strong> be present<br />
at an open<strong>in</strong>g ceremony on <strong>the</strong><br />
even<strong>in</strong>g of March 23.<br />
As a Centennial project,<br />
<strong>the</strong> club is to arrange _ for<br />
exhibitions of several different<br />
h<strong>and</strong>iwork hobbies to be displayed<br />
<strong>in</strong> store w<strong>in</strong>dows <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
down town area dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
com<strong>in</strong>g summer months. It is<br />
known that <strong>the</strong>re are many<br />
h<strong>and</strong>icrafts practiced <strong>in</strong> this<br />
area that are rarely displayed<br />
. Centennial year<br />
would be a good time to see<br />
what talent is all around us,<br />
<strong>and</strong> to encourage it.<br />
Local woman named<br />
m<strong>in</strong>e firm director<br />
Market gardens <strong>and</strong> m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
have one th<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> common --<br />
Agnes Bourque.<br />
Mrs. Bourque, who has operated<br />
<strong>the</strong> market garden at<br />
Baker Farm on <strong>the</strong> westside<br />
for <strong>the</strong> past several years,<br />
has stepped <strong>in</strong>to a new sphere.<br />
But, she doesn't th<strong>in</strong>k be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

her garden operations.<br />
She is just back from Vancouver<br />
where she successfully<br />
negotiated with her son<br />
Ernest North, to become a<br />
director <strong>in</strong> his company, And,<br />
says Agnes, "I didn't have to<br />

The whole venture began<br />
when her son, a prospector<br />
for many years, began stak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g claims <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cariboo.<br />
The company now consists of<br />
three properties -- Highl<strong>and</strong><br />
Valley, with 48 claims; Canim<br />
wolves. Consider<strong>in</strong>g I lived <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> middle of Vancouver this<br />
would have to be termed unusual.<br />
1 wonder if fairy tales<br />
had a th<strong>in</strong>g to do with it?<br />
Especially s<strong>in</strong>ce parents had<br />
little choice <strong>the</strong>n <strong>in</strong> read<strong>in</strong>g<br />
material for pre-schoolers.<br />
Parents teach <strong>the</strong>ir children<br />
to believe <strong>in</strong> Santa Glaus,<br />
<strong>the</strong> Easter Bunny, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Tooth Fairy. Then, on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
h<strong>and</strong>, <strong>the</strong>y read stories about<br />
bears <strong>and</strong> wolves, beasts <strong>and</strong><br />
witches. How can any child<br />
know where fiction <strong>and</strong> nonfiction<br />
become separated?<br />
While I was read<strong>in</strong>g Red<br />
Rid<strong>in</strong>g Hood, I added a false<br />
end<strong>in</strong>g, hop<strong>in</strong>g to send <strong>the</strong><br />
kids to bed on a cheerier<br />
note. "The woodsman, hear<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Red Rid<strong>in</strong>g Hood's screams<br />
ran to <strong>the</strong> house <strong>and</strong> chopped<br />

"I would like to see people take<br />
more <strong>in</strong>terest. There is so<br />
much potential here <strong>and</strong> if<br />
people would dig <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
pockets we could have a lot<br />
more," she said.<br />
An exploration crew w<strong>ill</strong> be<br />

Rural Route<br />
by DIANE MYERS<br />
In order to know <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong> a law, we have to practice<br />
it. And, of course, practice makes perfect.<br />
Discount<strong>in</strong>g a m<strong>in</strong>ority of "baddies", society on <strong>the</strong> whole<br />
has learned by follow<strong>in</strong>g laws, that a fairly stable coexistence<br />
is possible. However, <strong>the</strong>re are certa<strong>in</strong> laws over<br />
which we have little or no control. There is no red tape <strong>in</strong>volved<br />
with <strong>the</strong>se laws <strong>and</strong> all are, more or less, applied<br />
when <strong>and</strong> if <strong>the</strong> need arises. A brief rundown <strong>in</strong>cludes <strong>the</strong><br />
law of averages, <strong>the</strong> law of Nature, <strong>the</strong> unwritten law, <strong>the</strong><br />
law of dim<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g returns <strong>and</strong> many more.<br />
But <strong>the</strong>re is only one law few people have heard of which<br />
applies to all of us, <strong>in</strong> some way or ano<strong>the</strong>r, every day.<br />
This relatively unheard of, yet well-used law has been h<strong>and</strong>ed<br />
down from generation to generation <strong>and</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>ates with a<br />
fellow named Mr. Murphy. Murphy's Law, loosely paraphrased,<br />
goes someth<strong>in</strong>g like this: "if anyth<strong>in</strong>g can go wrong,<br />
it always w<strong>ill</strong> <strong>and</strong> always at <strong>the</strong> worst times."<br />
No one seems to know when <strong>and</strong> how Murphy came up<br />
with this br<strong>ill</strong>iant law, but he sure hit <strong>the</strong> old nail on <strong>the</strong><br />
head. Possibly <strong>the</strong> idea derived dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Great Potato<br />
Fam<strong>in</strong>e, Murphy be<strong>in</strong>g an Irish name. Or maybe he was<br />
lament<strong>in</strong>g his plight when he tried to kiss <strong>the</strong> Blarney Stone<br />
<strong>and</strong> someone let go of his feet! We'll probably never know<br />
for sure, but it st<strong>and</strong>s to reason, anyone com<strong>in</strong>g up with a<br />
law like that must have had an extended run of rotten luck.<br />
Those are <strong>the</strong> words of a true pessimist!<br />
ODDS AGAINST YOU<br />
However, it isn't necessary to be a pessimistic Irishman<br />
to f<strong>in</strong>d Murphy's Law cropp<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>in</strong> situation after<br />
situation. And <strong>the</strong>re are certa<strong>in</strong> tell-tale signs which give<br />
fair warn<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> sky is ready to tall <strong>in</strong>. For <strong>in</strong>stance,<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g, if you jump out of bed <strong>and</strong> fall on your face,<br />
crawl out of bed <strong>and</strong> step on a roller skate or carefully<br />
rise from bed <strong>and</strong> walk <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> wall, chances are th<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
are go<strong>in</strong>g to get worse as <strong>the</strong> day progresses. If <strong>in</strong>cidents<br />
of this type are ignored, <strong>the</strong> next obvious ones should enlighten<br />
even <strong>the</strong> slow learners! Should you survive <strong>the</strong> simple<br />
act of gett<strong>in</strong>g out of bed, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n leave for work with a half<br />
hour drive ahead <strong>and</strong> you're five m<strong>in</strong>utes late already <strong>and</strong>...<br />
<strong>the</strong> car won't start...look out! You're stuck with Murphy's<br />
law <strong>the</strong> rest of <strong>the</strong> day!<br />
Have courage, my friends, because that car stalled <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> middle of an <strong>in</strong>tersection dur<strong>in</strong>g rush hour is more<br />
than likely go<strong>in</strong>g to be yours. The person who slips on <strong>the</strong><br />
ice while hurry<strong>in</strong>g to renew a medical <strong>in</strong>surance policy<br />
which expired two hours before <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> person who can't<br />
f<strong>in</strong>d $4,782.73 just as <strong>the</strong> auditors arrive is go<strong>in</strong>g to be...<br />
<strong>in</strong> accordance with Murphy's Law... you, Baby, you!!<br />
THE S6GGY,S0GGY DEW<br />
To be more specific, let's consider <strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> how<br />
old Murphy's law applies. It's summer, a hot, sunny day.<br />
Naturally, any farmer w<strong>ill</strong> start mow<strong>in</strong>g hay. But first<br />
he'll have problems start<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> tractor, <strong>the</strong> mower won't<br />
work properly for <strong>the</strong> first several rounds <strong>and</strong> he'll waste<br />
two hours of precious sunlight mired down <strong>in</strong> a bog hole.<br />
To make matters worse <strong>the</strong> thunderheads are ga<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g on<br />
<strong>the</strong> horizon even though <strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>rman reassured him he<br />
had at least a week of dry<strong>in</strong>g wea<strong>the</strong>r. And of course, by<br />
morn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g day, his freshly mown hay is lay<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong> a couple of <strong>in</strong>ches of <strong>the</strong> soggy, soggy dew! You w<strong>ill</strong><br />
have to agree, if it was go<strong>in</strong>g to happen, it couldn't have<br />
happened at a worse time!<br />
Then <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r situation exist<strong>in</strong>g now here <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Cariboo. It's not too cold, but not too warm. All <strong>the</strong><br />
logg<strong>in</strong>g truck drivers are <strong>in</strong> high gear, <strong>the</strong> m<strong>ill</strong>s are<br />
scream<strong>in</strong>g for logs, lumber prices are start<strong>in</strong>g to climb<br />
at a steady rate, <strong>the</strong> future of <strong>the</strong> whole <strong>in</strong>dustry is pick<strong>in</strong>g<br />
up <strong>and</strong> what's go<strong>in</strong>g to happen? Right, Break-up! It couldn't<br />
happen at a worse time!<br />
The list of life's little mishaps is endless thanks to<br />
Murphy's Law. It's like be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a state of seige with your<br />
h<strong>and</strong>s tied beh<strong>in</strong>d your back, bl<strong>in</strong>dfolded <strong>and</strong> no help <strong>in</strong><br />
sight. Lady Luck has disappeared over <strong>the</strong> h<strong>ill</strong> <strong>and</strong> you're<br />
up a creek without a boat, let alone a damn paddle!<br />
Around <strong>the</strong> old ranch, we have our own law, a slight<br />
variation of Murphy's Law, but similar <strong>in</strong> many respects.<br />
Instead of say<strong>in</strong>g "If anyth<strong>in</strong>g can go wrong, it always w<strong>ill</strong><br />
<strong>and</strong> always at <strong>the</strong> worst time", we say "Everyth<strong>in</strong>g always<br />
goes wrong, it probably always w<strong>ill</strong> <strong>and</strong> it couldn't<br />
happen at a worse time, but always does"! We refer to<br />
it as Myers Law!<br />
By apply<strong>in</strong>g Myers Law to our everday life, we are always<br />
fully prepared for <strong>the</strong> worst, expect <strong>the</strong> worst <strong>and</strong><br />
accept <strong>the</strong> worst. It's a whole lot easier than be<strong>in</strong>g an old<br />
pessimist like poor old Mr. Murphy.<br />

SEMAPHORE FOR BROWNIES. Some time ago <strong>the</strong>re was<br />
debate as to whe<strong>the</strong>r or not semaphore should be kept <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Brownie programme. But experts sk<strong>ill</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> work with children<br />
can simply f<strong>in</strong>d no o<strong>the</strong>r test with semaphore's valuable<br />
qualities. It develops: 1. Perseverence - a Brownie<br />
has to learn semaphore for herself. 2. Co-ord<strong>in</strong>ation of m<strong>in</strong>d<br />
<strong>and</strong> body - <strong>and</strong> good sense of opposites <strong>and</strong> mirror images.<br />
3. Confidence - <strong>and</strong> a sense of achievement once semaphore is<br />
mastered.<br />
There are eight possible arm positions. The Brownies<br />
must be accurate about each of <strong>the</strong>m. Most people f<strong>in</strong>d that<br />
learn<strong>in</strong>g semaphore by opposites is best, but <strong>the</strong>re is no set<br />
way. A good nucleus of letters might <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> opposites,<br />
A <strong>and</strong> G; B<strong>and</strong>F;C<strong>and</strong>E; 0 <strong>and</strong> W; P <strong>and</strong> J; plus easy letters<br />
such as D, L, N, U, <strong>and</strong>R. Learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> letters <strong>in</strong> alphabetical<br />
order is called <strong>the</strong> circle method, <strong>and</strong> NOT recommended because<br />
most girls first have to go round <strong>the</strong> circle <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
m<strong>in</strong>ds to f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> letter be<strong>in</strong>g signalled. The o<strong>the</strong>r methods<br />
provide no prop - <strong>the</strong> girls must use <strong>the</strong>ir memories for<br />
<strong>in</strong>stant recognition.<br />
A good <strong>in</strong>truductory game is to demonstra six easy letters<br />
such as B, F, 0, W, U, N. Go over <strong>the</strong>m slowly, <strong>the</strong>n label<br />
<strong>the</strong> Brownies <strong>in</strong> eachSix with<strong>the</strong>seletters.The Guider signals<br />
a letter <strong>and</strong> that Brownie must jump up, shout her letter, clap<br />
her h<strong>and</strong>s over her head <strong>and</strong> sit down. The letter P might be<br />
<strong>in</strong>cluded so that <strong>the</strong> whole pack jumps up when it is signalled.<br />
As <strong>in</strong> all games, stop when <strong>the</strong> Brownies are st<strong>ill</strong> betre<strong>in</strong>g for<br />
more. Review at each succeed<strong>in</strong>g meet<strong>in</strong>g,<strong>and</strong> add a new letter.<br />
Signal a few simple words like Fun, Bow. Pow Wow. (Some<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r games <strong>and</strong> more <strong>in</strong>formation can be found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Guider H<strong>and</strong>book, Chapter 4.)<br />
