Meteor were many. In the
event of an engine failure the
aircraft would adopt an
almost perpendicular dive
from which the pilot could not
recover. This appears to
have been the case with
Flying Officer Slater.
After the war, 1457 Squadron
ceased to exist and air cadets
were to disappear from the
streets of Easingwold. Cadets
from Haxby and New Earswick were
able to join 110 (City of York)
Squadron based at Archbishop
Holgates School in Lord Mayors
Walk (now the College of Ripon and
St John).
In 1966 Flight Lieutenant Dick
Harrison was to change all that and
once again, the sight of air force blue
was to re-appear, with what is still
today the only military based youth
organisation in Easingwold.
The picture above shows Flying Officer William Alfred Slater
one of the Squadron’s Meteor jets.
to board a Halifax bomber for air experience
flying at Rufforth.
Cadets of 1457 Squadron march past the Saluting Base at York Minster where the Lord Mayor of
York takes the salute at the Victory Parade.
