First successes in the Duke of Edinburgh Award were now appearing with four cadets obtaining the Bronze Award and progressing through to the Silver. Community action also featured. Charging 25 pence a time the money raised went to the Archbishop of York's fund to buy medical supplies for a hospital in East Pakistan. The year culminated in the Squadron’s annual awards and open evening held at Headquarters where the guest of honour was the Regional Commandant, Group Cadet Camp at RAF Tern Hill in Shropshire Captain W. Davis CBE DFC AFC. Sergeant Hutchinson was promoted to Flight Sergeant and awarded the shield for personal effort. Other awards went to Cadet Sergeant Astley and Cadet Robinson. Timothy Shaw. Whilst on his summer holidays in Cornwall Timothy and his friend Steven Richards had decided to climb up a cliff face from a deserted beach in a little cove. After about 30 feet, Timothy could get no further and decided to go back down. Steven however had got up ahead and appeared to be making good progress when he slipped and fell towards the boulder strewn beach below, landing heavily. The shock of seeing his friend fall gave Timothy a sense of urgency and having made his friend comfortable and dressing a head wound with his handkerchief, he took off his plimsolls and socks and waded into the sea to get help, not aware that the tide was coming in and that red flags were flying. Partly swimming, partly walking and at times, struggling to keep his head above water, he made his way around two headlands and into a bay where he saw two men, one fishing and the other picnicking. He shouted and told them of the accident, asking for their help and then carried on around another headland where he found a life-guard. Returning by the same route, considering it the only way round for speed he found the two men had already reached the scene and everything was under control. Steven was to spend a few weeks in hospital with three cracked vertebra. 1974 was a year of change for the Squadron. Flight Lieutenant Kidd relinquished command on his appointment to the Wing Staff and Ernest Astley was promoted to Flight Lieutenant and took command of the squadron. Ernest, who had many skills, was particularly accomplished in the art of tailoring. With apparent ease, he was able to turn the most ill fitting uniform into a snug fit, adding a particular sparkle to the cadets on parade. Camp in 1974 was at RAF West Raynham. It was also in 1974 that Royal Air Force Topcliffe where Easingwold cadets had logged many hours of flying in Varsity aircraft, changed ownership and became the Army's newest barracks. With the lowering of the RAF standard the 24th Air Portable Brigade moved in from Barnard Castle to join the Army Air Corps units already stationed there. Mark Boyle came to the squadron as a civilian instructor and joined Warrant Officer Geoff Wright who had been appointed the previous year. Interestingly Geoff and Ernest Astley had been colleagues many years before when both had served with 17 Squadron Royal Air Force in Japan between 1946 and 1948.
