Chapter 6 – The nineties
Roaring on into a new millennium
Two unusual and interesting
activities occurred in 1990. The first
was the squadron’s involvement in
“Operation Crash-point 90” which
was a major incident exercise
organised by the local authority and
the emergency services. Our cadets,
acting as casualties, were made up
with some very realistic looking
injuries.
Also from 18th to 20th May, the
squadron was invited to join the
Queens Own Yeomanry of the
Territorial Army for a weekend
exercise. During the weekend cadets
learnt about the Army and were
involved in exercises using light
tanks.
Success again in 1990 when the
squadron team won both the Wing
and Regional aircraft recognition
competitions. The picture below
shows from left to right Cadet
Corporal Towse, Cadet Flight
Sergeant Sewart, Cadet Sergeant
Mennell and Cadet corporal Wade
with the trophies. On the left, the
Wing trophy and on the right the
Regional Trophy. Sadly the team
was about to break up – Corporal
Perkins, a founder member, had just
left to go to university and Sergeant
Mennell was about to join the Royal
Air Force.
Further excellent trips to the Army Air
Corps at Topcliffe included flights in
the Lynx helicopters. Annual camp
was held at RAF Leuchars, and
those attending are shown on the
picture at the top of the following
page.
