A number of east-west streets such as
Elmfield are used as through routes to
connect the High Street and Kenton Road.
Traffic calming measures and one way
systems have been introduced in an adhoc
fashion to slow traffic to try to limit the
number of streets which turn out onto the
High Street.
2.7 Planning Policy and
Decision Making
Gosforth is a very popular suburb with a
good environment, and excellent
accessibility to the City Centre and other
facilities. It has recently attracted
developer interest in available sites
particularly for owner-occupied flats, for
which there is buoyant demand. Decision
making on these proposals has had the
policy benefit of the Unitary Development
Plan (UDP) which safeguards the amenity
of residential areas in general, for
example by protecting tree cover and the
privacy of rear gardens.
In addition, Policy H3 specifically prevents
the loss of large family houses in Gosforth
through conversion or redevelopment.
This policy is intended to maintain the
overall quality and quantity of this
important housing stock and its setting, for
its own value, and also to support the
City’s economic regeneration. As a result
there has been no loss of any good quality
dwellings since the adoption of the UDP.
Policy H3 is not in itself a building
conservation policy, but will be
complemented by conservation area
status, resulting in a high level of
protection for much of the residential core
of Gosforth.
