called rna.yla; besides its Tamool name already<br />

given, it is onen called triviat-putrum. The leaves,<br />

which are much smaller than those of most other of<br />

the Bauhinias, are cordate, lobes semiorbiculate, tomentose,<br />

and clasp together during the night; the<br />

flowers have a greenish calyx, and a bell-shaped yellowish-white<br />

corolla.<br />

The present article grows in the botanical garden<br />

of Calcutta, introduced by W. Hamilton, Esq. Thirteen<br />

other species, all of Eastern countries, were in<br />

that garden in 1814.<br />

Purple Galega.<br />

GALEGA PURPUREA (Lin.).<br />

CI. and Ord. Diadelphia Decandria. Nat. Ord.<br />

Papilionacere. Rothe Geisraute (Nom. Triv. Willd.).<br />

A decoction of the bitter root of this galega the<br />

Vytians prescribe in cases of dyspepsia, lientery, and<br />

tympanitis; it is a low-growing plant, with an herbaceous<br />

and somewhat angular stalk, seldom more<br />

than three feet high; the pinnated leaves have eight<br />

or nine pairs of oblong smooth leaflets; the flowers<br />

are small, purple, in a loose spike, and are succeeded<br />

by slender, erect legumes, each about an inch and a<br />

half in length. .<br />

The essential character is thus given by Willdenow:<br />
