10 One Of Life’s Moments~The Gift By Gwen Keane How much do you know about elephants? ey are not native to the Northern Neck that’s for sure, or the state of Tennessee. ey are extremely intelligent animals, who always remember people and past relationships. And why do I want to talk about elephants? My husband and I received a generous gift, from my cousin. She enrolled us in the Adopt- An-Elephant program, and we have a Certicate of Adoption, for an African elephant named Tange. In Hohenwald, Tennessee, there exists e Elephant Sanctuary—a home away from home, to fourteen India and African elephants. Our elephant Tange is forty years old. She was born in the wild, and her family was killed by poachers. Before coming to the Elephant Sanctuary, she was sold and lived in a wild animal park in Albany, Georgia, until 2004. While living in Albany, she often was on display at various businesses during fundraiser events. e local residents in this small town ate a lot of Big Mac sandwiches from McDonalds, in an eort to raise money for Tange’s care. Tange is described as having large eyes, and good natured interactions with the other elephants. After I read Tange’s story, I wanted to get in the car and go meet our elephant. But, further research revealed the elephants are not available to the public. ey have already paid their dues! e elephants and the work at the sanctuary has evolved into being distant friendly. And now visitors can sit at home and watch the elephants in real time on elecams! (www.elephants.com/elecam) It takes a lot of money to care for a single elephant living in captivity. On a daily basis Tange eats 130 lbs. of hay/vegetation, 5 lbs. of hand-mixed grains, 1 lb. of soaked wheat bran, 10-20 lbs. of fruit and vegetables. Tange’s favorite food is watermelon. Individuals can make donations to help feed the elephants. e goal of the sanctuary is to raise $185,000 in donations, set aside as endowments for each rescued elephant. Currently, Tange’s endowment is less than $25,000.
