Quality
Monash is one of Australia’s most prestigious
universities. With an international reputation for
the high quality of our research and teaching,
we consistently rank among the top universities
in Australia and the world.
A professional degree from day one
At Monash, you take classes relevant to your
chosen career from your first weeks with us.
This approach is adopted across the University
– in law, medicine, science, architecture,
education, nursing and engineering – and helps
you develop a deeper understanding of your
chosen profession sooner. It also means you
begin working towards your career from day one.
Specialised study when you’re
ready
Some Monash students choose to do a broad
generalist course (such as a Bachelor of Arts
or a Bachelor of Science). A generalist degree
allows you to choose from a broad range of
subject areas. You still get to specialise by
taking a major in one to two areas.
Many students move straight to employment
after generalist degrees, but some may also
choose to pursue a specialist course at
postgraduate level.
Valuable practical experience
Many Monash courses – including law,
business, commerce, pharmacy, journalism
and science – offer internships and work
placements to connect students to industry.
These programs help students define their
career goals and expose them to the industry
first-hand. Most placements also enable
students to gain credit towards their degree.
More choice, more flexibility
Choice is central to the Monash experience.
As Australia’s largest university, Monash has
more staff, students, courses and campuses
around the globe than any other Australian
university. This means more choice and
more flexibility for you.
Full-time/part-time
Monash offers both full-time and part-time
study options in most courses. You can enrol
in just one unit up to the maximum for your
course (usually four units per semester).
You can make this decision each semester.
So you might be part-time one semester and
then decide to increase your units the next.
On-campus/off-campus
Some Monash courses are offered off-campus.
Off-campus simply means you do not need to
attend classes. It is a flexible mode of study,
based on a combination of printed study
materials and electronic communication.
Each unit studied in the off-campus learning
mode has the same content and assessment
as the equivalent on-campus unit.
Off-campus learning at Monash enables those
who have family, work or other commitments
to further their studies at their pace.
A full list of Monash courses offered in
off-campus mode is available on Course
Finder – www.monash.edu/study
International locations
With campuses in Australia, Malaysia and
South Africa and active research and teaching
centres in Italy and India, Monash has
an impressive international footprint.
The Diploma of Tertiary Studies (DoTS) is an
innovative program that can help you get into
Monash University if you haven’t got the Year
12 score you expected or are returning to
study after working or raising a family.
Through DoTS, you can begin study in your
chosen field from day one of university, and it
doesn’t add any time to your degree.
How DoTS works
Year 1
If you’re in Year 12, or have recently finished
secondary school, you can apply for DoTS with
an ATAR of 50 or above, a study score of 25 or
higher in English or 30 for ESL. For some courses,
you’ll need to have a minimum score in Maths.
DoTS lets you begin studying towards some
of Monash University’s most popular courses.
Course and campus options are listed below.
Diploma of Tertiary Studies (DoTS students take two DoTS units and six first year units from their
chosen destination degree)
Year 2
Second year of Monash destination degree (Successful completion of DoTS qualifies you to apply
to your chosen Monash destination degree. Credit is granted for the units completed in DoTS)
pathways and the options for each Monash
degree area. Detailed course descriptions are
Start with a Monash diploma and finish with
a Monash degree in as little as three years.
Nicholas Martakis
Nicholas Martakis came to the Monash Diploma of
Tertiary Studies (DoTS) as a mature age student. He
says that although he had his heart set on the
Bachelor of Nursing/Emergency Health (Paramedics)
double degree, and may well have been directly
accepted into that course, DoTS was definitely the
right option.
“I had been out of school for 5 years and even when I
was at school I was not a great student. I did not
apply myself and I got through doing the bare
minimum. I don’t think I would be managing as well
as I am now [without the DoTS experience], and I
doubt I would be getting as much out of it as I am
now,” Nicholas said.
DoTS allowed Nicholas to reacquaint himself with the
academic environment and to prepare for study at the
university level before moving on to the double degree.
Now, Nicholas has his sights set on a career as a
MICA paramedic, in the Royal Flying Doctors or as an
Air Ambulance paramedic. And he says he wouldn’t
be aiming so high without the confidence he’s gained
from the DoTS program.
If you don’t meet minimum academic entry
requirements, you can apply to do single units.
Completion of two higher education units
makes you eligible to apply for entry
to undergraduate courses.
Single units are available on a fee-paying basis
only. A separate charge is made for each unit.
At the successful conclusion of diploma
studies domestic students need to apply
through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions
Centre (VTAC) for entry into their Monash
University destination bachelor degree
program. Direct applications will not be
accepted by the University. Student
administration staff will assist in the process.
Indigenous
Programs
Monash is committed to increasing access and
success for Indigenous Australians.
The Indigenous Enabling Program (IEP)
The Indigenous Enabling Program is designed
for students whose ATAR score falls below the
minimum requirements for entry to their
preferred degree, and for those who are
seeking mature age entry and have not
completed Year 12.
The program runs for one semester and
consists of three units of study and an assisted
tutorial program designed to develop the study
skills needed to enter an undergraduate
degree. This is a full-time program which is
ABSTUDY approved.
If you successfully complete the Indigenous
Enabling Program you will then be able to
enrol in a Monash undergraduate degree.
Emily Estcourt
The key point for Emily was at the first
Monash Hands on Indigenous Summer
Camp. Up until then, tertiary study was
not something she had considered.
The camp gave her a taste of life on
campus and introduced her to a range
of opportunities, particularly the
Monash Indigenous Scholarship
for Achievement and Equity. The
scholarship soon turned university
education into a reality for her.
Emily is now taking a Bachelor of Arts,
with a major in Indigenous Studies and
a minor in Behavioural Studies. She
credits the Monash Yulendj Indigenous
Engagement Unit for helping her
through her course, providing clear
course guidance and keeping students
active and involved in the University
community.
She has since returned to the summer
camp as a mentor, where she uses her
course knowledge to guide new
participants. She also tutors other
Indigenous students and works as an
employment team member for Social
Ventures Australia.
TAFE
pathways
A qualification from TAFE provides a great background
for entry to many Monash degrees.
Studying at TAFE is also an excellent pathway to many Monash courses. Successful completion
of a TAFE Certificate IV or diploma qualifies students for entry to many Monash degrees, in some
cases with credit for previous studies.
If you have successfully completed a Certificate IV, diploma or first year of an advanced diploma
this may help you enter university.
If you gain a place at Monash, you may be eligible for some credit towards your course for
any graded TAFE studies you have completed.
Monash recognises vocational qualifications from providers across Australia. Monash also has
Philip Crowder
Philip Gordon Crowder always knew he wanted to teach, he just
didn’t feel ready for university when he was first offered a place
in a teaching course as a teenager.
Now, after 26 years in the family real estate business, travelling
the world and working overseas, meeting and marrying his wife
and starting a family, he feels the time is right to go back to
school, in order to finally start running a classroom.
Philip’s ambition to teach was rekindled by witnessing his wife’s
experiences as a teacher. Her career took the family to an
American school in Kuwait, where Philip was able to gain his
own experience working as an instructional assistant, soccer
coach and teaching maths and English to groups of primary
school children.
Upon the family’s return to Australia, Philip completed a TAFE
certificate and was accepted to study for a Diploma of
Education (Primary) at Monash University.
With the support of his lecturers, Philip has made a smooth
transition to university and is looking forward to beginning his
dream career.
“As a mature age student with life experience, I knew what
I wanted to do. I am focused, genuinely interested, enthusiastic
and motivated to get my degree,” Philip said.
“With this interest comes a desire to excel and get marks that
I couldn’t have dreamed of when I was at school.
“I must say that my initial intention was to become a principal,
but now, dealing with the kids and seeing the difference you
can make I’m no longer in any hurry to climb the
corporate ladder.”
Adrian Vella
Adrian Vella has always had a keen interest in information
technology, but had not considered going all the way with
a university degree.
“It was never presented as a real option during high school,”
Adrian says.
He started off with a TAFE Diploma in Website Development
Multimedia, but held his dream of working in the computer
games development industry close.
Halfway through TAFE, Adrian researched his options and had
found a new pathway to his goal via a degree with Monash
University’s Faculty of Information Technology, specialising in
Games Development.
“I found that a Monash degree was the fastest way to my goal
of becoming a computer games programmer.”
The transition from TAFE to a university degree gave Adrian
more control over his study focus, where he found himself able
to choose units towards his overall aim.
“TAFE is very task-oriented, whereas university was
a goal-oriented experience,” Adrian says.
“At Monash, I had the freedom to pick the classes that would
enhance my chances of getting a job in games development.”
Special Entry Admissions Scheme
(SEAS)
This scheme provides special admission
consideration to students whose opportunity
to demonstrate their potential for university
study may have been restricted due to
their circumstances. If you have experienced
any of the circumstances listed below you may
be eligible for bonus points, based on your
application. Bonus points are added to your
aggregate study score. This increases your
chance of receiving an offer.
SEAS categories
n Mature age
n Experiencing financial disadvantage
n Indigenous Australian
n From a school in a regional or remote
area in Australia
n Living with a disability or long-term
medical condition
n From a non-English-speaking background
n Experiencing difficult family circumstances
n From an under-represented school.
SEAS is available for applications via VTAC.
Scholarships
Monash offers a range of scholarships and
Kristy McRae
Well before she left school, Kristy McRae knew that human
services was the field in which she wanted to pursue a career.
What she didn’t know was whether studying at university was
for her and, if it was, what the best pathway might be.
That’s where the Monash Diploma of Tertiary Studies (DoTS)
program came in. Kristy first heard about the program from her
school career counsellor, who highly recommended that all
Year 12 students put it down as a preference. Kristy did just
that and was accepted into the course.
“I was quite uncertain about the specific course I wanted to do.
By undertaking DoTS, not only did I gain valuable university
experience, but it also gave me time to really consider what it
was that I wanted to do,” Kristy said.
“DoTS prepares you for what’s to come. I don’t think I would
have survived first year uni without having the guidance and
learning that I gained from not only the course itself but the
DoTS faculty [staff].”
For Kristy, who had an idea of where she wanted to go, but
wasn’t absolutely certain, DoTS proved the perfect option. She
was excited to get in to the program, and even more excited
when it led her into a Monash Bachelor of Social Work that
allowed her to remain at the Berwick campus.
“I love the Berwick campus... after being there for the year with
DoTS I was determined to find a way to stay there for my future
studies,” Kristy said.
Kristy has now completed the first semester of her bachelor
degree and says she couldn’t be happier. Her advice for
students deciding what they want to do after school is simple:
“I think the main thing for students to remember is that there are
pathways! While it’s nice to get the marks you need and get
straight into a bachelor degree, Monash does offer a pathway
that not only gives students a chance to prove themselves, it
also helps you understand how you learn.
