River levels top 1952 record
Water began backing up
from an elevated river level
west of Craig, MO, along the
Big Tarkio River, the week of
June 7. Those waters became
deep enough to leave several
inches of water in St. Peter’s
Lutheran Church, in Craig,
MO, and a few low-lying
homes by Tuesday, June 15,
with waters still rising and
the river at 22.23 feet by noon
that day.
That water, in its search for
lower ground, moved north
toward Corning along the Big
Tark. Sandbagging efforts
kept the water at bay in some
low-lying areas but only temporarily.
Before 6:00 a.m. on Thursday,
June 17, a river levee at
the confluence of the Misssouri
and Tarkio rivers southwest of
Craig broke. The 150-200 feet
breach flooded hundreds of
acres of farmland as it raced
toward Big Lake.
As a result, the voluntary
evacuation of Big Lake that
happened over the weekend
of June 12, became a necessity
by Thursday, June 17. Many
residents were proactive in
the evacuation, remembering
the flood waters of 1993 and
more recently, 2007. With river
levels at Rulo at 24.08 feet
by 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June
18, residents would see a 98”
rise in the water level at Big
Lake by Wednesday, June 23,
at sunrise.
Big Lake State Park Natural
Resource Manager Rusty
Burge reported nearly a foot
of water in the dining lodge,
a couple of feet in the pool
area, water in the motel and
that nearly 90% of the park
had water on it by Wednesday,
June 23. Crews would
put things up in the cabins on
Wednesday, as the water was
still rising.
Water was headed toward
Fortescue and an evacuation
was issued there on Monday,
June 21. Sandbagging was
done in Fortescue in an effort
to stave off the encroaching
waters.
The county has already received
and utilized 20,000
sandbags in efforts all across
Holt County, with 50,000 more
bags ordered. Forest City built
a sandbag wall around its well
in order to protect it from potential
river water invasion
as record levels tugged at the
banks near Forest City.
Fears around the Mill Creek
area on Monday, June 21, had
volunteers placing sandbags
on the levee there. Pressure
there may have been relieved
when the levee broke west of
Ivan Kent’s home southwest of
Corning early Tuesday, June
22. Sandbagging efforts began
in Corning immediately.
As the river reached an alltime
high of 26.2 feet on Tuesday
morning, water began
rushing over the farm levee
and submerged thousands of
acres of farm ground in the
bottom.
Holt County reacts to flood waters
Sandbagging began in earnest
in Corning on Tuesday,
as well as Craig residents taking
precautionary measures.
Craig volunteers began throwing
up a dike around the edge
of town, as well as sandbags
being utilized.
On Monday, June 21, a record
high river level of 25.75
broke the old 1952 record of
25.6. River levels reached
26.43 by Wednesday morning,
with no relief in sight.
With river conditions predicted
to remain at record
levels, Gavins Point Dam in
South Dakota still releasing
15,000 cubic square feet per
second and the stability of
levees around the area questionable,
it’s anyone’s guess as
to the question of, “When will
the flood of 2010 be over?”
Looking south into Big Lake along Highway 111- On Monday, June 21, showed how
impassible the area had become. Flood waters had poured in from the northwest into the
area over the weekend, adding seven feet of water to some of the lowest areas.
Governor Jay Nixon surveyed
flooding at Big Lake
Gov. Jay Nixon held a
round table conference
on Friday, June 18, at the
United Methodist Church
in Mound City. The purpose
of his visit was to discuss
the flooding occurring
in Holt County, especially
the area of Big Lake, and
to reassure the teams in
place, helping in the emergency,
of the state’s role in
assisting with the eminent
disaster.
The Big Lake Village
Board, Holt County Commission,
State Emergency
Management Agency
(SEMA), Missouri State
Highway Patrol, Representative
Mike Thomson,
Senator Brad Lager and
many others gathered for
the meeting.
Gov. Nixon displayed
aerial maps of the breach
on the Missouri levee
southwest of Craig and the
subsequent wide-spread
deluge of water to the areas.
Gov. Nixon outlined
steps that SEMA would
be taking as the disaster
progresses and for the inevitable
clean-up that will
follow. He praised the Red
Cross for its efforts to establish
shelter for those
in need, as one family was
provided shelter on Thursday
evening.
Presiding Commissioner
Mark Sitherwood spoke
to Governor Nixon saying,
“We appreciate your proactive
stand by coming at the
beginning of this disaster.”
“It’s good to see faithbased
friends in action, utilizing
the resources to help
those in need during this
disastrous time,” commented
Governor Nixon with
the Methodist Church be-
ing set up with the American
Red Cross volunteers.
“All states across the United
States are not like this,”
he added. “We’re here with
the Red Cross volunteers
to serve our fellow people.”
The governor asked
those present for their reports
in assisting with the
disaster. He then listened
as the commissioners and
county clerk gave accurate
and up-to-date reports on
the actual and potential
disaster situations around
the county.
The amount of water being
let out of the Gavin’s
Point Dam, S.D., which
was being released at
33,000 cubic feet per second,
was an issue of concern
as well as the elevated
railroad tracks at the
south end of the lake that
create a “bathtub effect” in
regard to letting the wa-
ter back out of the lake.
Those tracks were fortified
in 2007 after a portion of
those were swept away.
It was stated that the river
will need to drop below
21 feet to see any improvement
in the area and no
one can predict when that
will happen. The Mound
City and Big Lake areas
slipped by on Thursday
night with nothing materializing
from the predicted
storms, which helped in
terms of no additional water
to deal with.
Governor Nixon reassured
those present that
the state would do what
was necessary and would
assist at all levels. A declaration
of disaster may be
forthcoming as teams are
able to get in and assess
the actual damage.
Governor Jay Nixon, second from right- Finished his
time in Mound City on Friday, June 18, with a visit to the
Red Cross trailer. Governor Nixon spoke with Midland Empire
Red Cross Emergency Director Karla Long, right, about
the emergency shelter that “lives” in Mound City which can
provide up to 100 people with a cot for use in the emergency
shelter at the Mound City Methodist Church. Also pictured
from left to right are Col. Ron Replogle, superintendent for
the Missouri State Highway Patrol, and First Lady Georganne
Nixon.

Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor,
It seems like only yesterday when I was introduced to Relay for
Life. Without the communities of Holt County, I could not have
had such a success. We have raised nearly $170,000 in the last
ten years. Relay for Life has involved hundreds of Holt County
residents and some out-of-town participants. It’s going to be hard
to step down next year but hope you all help Brynda, as she takes
charge in 2011.
I especially want to thank Steve for allowing “me time” to devote
to Relay for Life and my kids and grandkids for helping in
many, many ways- I think they enjoy the Relay as much as I do.
Thanks to everyone that has volunteered their services, I won’t
mention names for fear of forgetting someone. God bless you all!
Karen Cotton
Dear Mound City News,
Just a note to tell you how much I enjoyed your “50 years ago-
1960”. Telling of the new baseball uniforms and listing the rosters
of some of the players really brought back some memories.
The baseball program and the new uniforms were mainly a result
of the efforts of Sol Forney, Orville Messick, Ray Nauman, the
Mound City Lions Club, donors and Harmon Wilkinson’s green
pickup and gas. I am sure I have unintentionally left someone
out.
I do remember when we got the new uniforms, we also got batting
helmets for the first time. The very first game after we got
the helmets, Greg White took a wild pitch to the head in a game at
Skidmore. Thank God for the helmet!
Just reminiscing, thanks for bringing back the memories!
Sincerely, Harold Wilkinson, Solon, IA
P.S. I really enjoy Gene Poynter’s writings. I hope to meet him
someday.
Heights
Residents recently enjoyed
an afternoon discussing weddings.
June is known as the
wedding month. More of the
residents were married in February
with only a couple in
June. They played a word game
about rings and things that are
rings. The residents also had
a fun time with couples. They
played a game on how well you
know the bride and a couple of
ladies were picked and questioned
beforehand. The other
residents had to guess who
they were talking about. Those
that wanted watched a video
of a real wedding, Marcia and
Gene Miller, who were married
in 1994.
Fathers have always been important
people. The residents
enjoyed discussing their dads
during the afternoon on Tuesday,
June 15. They played several
games about famous dads
and games about fishing.
The monthly staff meeting
was held on Wednesday morning.
An in-service was given by
Amy from Kendalwood Hospice
on “Compassion fatigue”.
Staff recognized for service was
Sandy Freeman, 18 years; Sharon
Smith, 17 years; Melanie
Freeman, 3 years; and Makala
Knapp, 2 years. This month,
the Missouri Health Care Association
recognized the Nurses’
Aides for their dedication and
commitment.
Jingo was played during the
afternoon on Wednesday. This
month the residents played
“Summertime” jingo. Questions
and answers were things that
had to do with summer. Winners
of the games were Hope
Helfers, Helen Gomel, Alice Mc-
Cartney, Clarice Kuhn, Frances
Martin and Delores Howard.
The Methodist Church hosted
birthday bingo prizes, a birthday
party for all the residents in
attendance, and gifts for those
with June birthdays. Residents
celebrating birthdays were
Owen Peters and Jenny Grable.
Those assisting from the church
were Kate Drew, Vickie Taylor;
Marie, Rebecca, James and Joseph
Wheeler; Jeanie Young,
Judy McIntire; Chrystal, Valerie
and Ainsley Karr; Marjorie
Field and Hannah and Emily
Wedlock. Additional volunteers
were Shirley Jackson, Gordon
Robbins and Gail Twyman.
What is better during the
afternoon than having a cold
delicious watermelon? Well,
on Friday afternoon there was
nothing better. Residents had
all they could eat and more.
Sunday morning services
were provided by Larry Brickey
and family. Afternoon Father’s
Day worship was conducted
by the Christian Fellowship
Church.
I hereby waive all claims against Northwest Health Services, Inc., NHS employees
and anyone connected with the event from any and all responsibility regarding any
injury that I may incur as a result of my participation in the 20th Annual Red Rock
Fun Run. I understand that first aid will be made available, but Northwest Health
Services is under no obligation to provide free medical treatment other than basic
first aid (treatment of blisters, dehydration, heat, etc.).
Fourth of July Co-ed
Softball Tournament
The Mound City Kiwanis Club is again sponsoring the
Co-ed Softball Tournament. This year, the tournament
will be held at the Mound City baseball fields from 1:00
to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 3, and on Sunday, July 4,
from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m (as needed to finish the tournament).
The tournament format will be selected after the number
of team entries are determined. Each team must consist
of ten players, all over the age of 15. Of the ten, five
players on the field must be women.
Some unique rules will be announced the day of the
tournament to enhance the game.
According to Jonathan Miller, Mound City Kiwanis
member and coodinator for the event, “The response to
the event was so overwhelming, not only with participants
but also with the number of spectators who hung
around for the event, that it was decided to continue the
event.”
Register teams by contacting Jonathan Miller at 660-
442-5797 or Corey Gordon at 660-572-0107. Team registration
fees are $50 and must be paid prior to the tournament.
Red Rock Fun Run
The Red Rock Fun Run, sponsored by Northwest Health
Services, Inc., starts Saturday morning, July 3, at 8:00 a.m.
The clinic rescinded the decision to start the run from
its new location and go up the hill, so the run will start in
front of the old location at the corner on 502 State Street.
Entrants can run or walk the 5K (3.1 miles), which will traverse
through town up and down the bluff.
Those interested can fill out the form located inside this
edition of the Mound City News and return it with $10 to
the Mound City clinic. Entries paid before July 3 are guaranteed
a t-shirt, but entries can be taken the morning of the
race between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m. The cost is still $10 for late
entries but a t-shirt is not guaranteed.
New this year is the use of professional digital chip timing.
The new technology being used for the event will record
the time of each participant as they leave the clinic and digitally
register their time as they cross the finish line.
The run is in its 20th year and draws competitive runners
from around the area. It is also a great time to take a long
walk with friends and support Northwest Health Services,
Inc.
Big Lake State
Dining Lodge- The
highest point on the
lake, was host to a
couple inches of water
by Tuesday, June
22. Only a few inches
remained before water
would be seen in
the motel and cabins
as well. The pool
area had over a foot
of water and a portion
of the inner park
road nearby would be
swept away as a current
rushed through
the area.
Wyatt Drewes executed a unique rescue- Of the Mound City News and other
mail from his aunt’s mailbox after flood water quickly ravaged the area on Friday,
June 18. The river levee that broke, just northwest of Gail Voltmer’s residence,
left little time to remember to collect the mail that had been delivered earlier that
day. Wyatt, atop of Big Bertha, was towed to the mailbox by a tractor driven by his
brother, Trevor Drewes.
