No salary increase for
Circuit Clerk Deputy
January 25, 2010
The Holt County Commission met Monday,
January 25, 2010, at 9:00 a.m., with
Presiding Commissioner Mark Sitherwood,
First District Commissioner Bill
Gordon and Second District Commissioner
Don Holstine present.
After review, Commissioner Holstine
made a motion to accept the minutes as
written by County Clerk Kathy J. Kunkel.
The motion was seconded and approved.
Brenda Nelson, R.N., Health Department
Administrator, met with the Commission
to discuss a survey required
by the Community Development Block
Grant application. CDBG funds were used
to build the Courthouse Annex building
that houses the health department and
University Extension offices. A survey of
clients is required by the grant for two
years. Mrs. Nelson requested assistance
in cleaning the new annex building. Commissioners
instructed Mrs. Nelson to purchase
cleaning supplies and they would
look into maintenance and cleaning needs
in the future.
Treasurer Gay Quick presented the annual
settlement of funds to the County
Commission for the year ending December
31, 2009.
County Clerk Kathy J. Kunkel presented
the 2010 Annual Budget of Holt County.
Mrs. Kunkel read the Budget Message and
reviewed the final figures for all on-budget
funds. Commissioner Holstine made a motion
to adopt the budget and appropriate
the funds. The motion received a second
and was approved.
Jerri Dearmont, Northwest Regional
Council of Governments, met with the
Commissioners to discuss work at the
Courthouse Annex building. Final work
is scheduled for the spring, when weather
will permit dirt and concrete work.
Assessor Carla Markt joined the Commissioners
to review plans for new plat
advertising for the plat book with plans
to have new books by early summer.
Road and Bridge Supervisor, Daryl Biermann,
met with the Commissioners to give
an update on county roads. Recent freeze
and thaw cycles have left roads muddy
with melting snow continuing to cause
soft spots in the roadways.
Sheriff Scott Wedlock appeared before
the Commission to give an update on the
potential move of the probation and parole
office from the sheriff’s office space.
Ed Helsel, Helsel Design and Construction
Services, St. Joseph, joined the Commissioners
to review the hail storm roof repairs
and work at the annex building. Mr.
Helsel provided a lien waiver for $90,000
for materials and labor for the Road and
Bridge Barn in Oregon, the sheriff’s office,
jail and small buildings on the courtyard.
Commissioners approved a partial payment
for that work which is complete.
Circuit Clerk and Ex Officio Recorder
of Deeds, Vicki Book, appeared before the
Commission to discuss the rate of pay for
her deputy, Theresa Weber. Mrs. Weber
works forty hours per week at a rate of
$8.49 per hour or annual salary of $17,655.
Ms. Book noted that the hourly rate is less
than other courthouse deputies. Commissioner
Sitherwood noted that her yearly
salary is more than many other deputies
with similar tenure. The commissioners
took no action on a request by Ms. Book to
increase Mrs. Weber’s wage.
Mick Derr, Derr Insurance Services,
Maitland, approached the Commission
to review Medicare Supplemental Insurance.
Being no further business, Commissioner
Sitherwood adjourned the meeting until
Monday, February 1, 2010, at 9:00 a.m.
Royce Clement, Maitland, MO, David
Thurnau, Maryville, MO, and Ted Gibbler,
Independence, MO, recently took part in a
wild boar hunt in Texas.
Royce has been on these hunts many
times in the past decade. Sometimes, the
hunters may go twice in a year. The three
men were part of a guided hunt in rough
country near Washington, TX.
“The land there looks like the Bad Lands,
with all the red clay,” remarked Royce.
The group hunted at night by the light of
the moon sitting in a blind waiting on the
hogs to come to the baited stand. Hunters
sometimes would begin their hunt as early
as four o’clock in the afternoon and stay
there until three or four in the morning.
The hogs, Russian wild boars, are very
territorial and can become agitated if they
smell the hunters.
The three day hunting trip yielded three
wild hogs for Royce, with 10 being harvested
in all. The meat is used like regular
pork and is said to be quite tasty.
Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor,
I suspect that there is or has been a conspiracy to deny senior
citizens their rightful and lawful cost of living (COLA) increase
for the year 2010. I suspect this conspiracy involves the consumers’
price index (CPI), the social security administration (SSA),
Congress and our President. I believe that because of the high
cost of the bailout, that the CPI was influenced to manipulate
the cost of living figures to reflect a negative inflation situation. I
have written and faxed letter after letter after letter to my senators
and representatives showing irrefutable proof of the higher
costs of living in 2009, but to no avail. Senator Bond sent five
generic letters in reply, all saying exactly the same thing. Sam
Graves sent two generic letters and McCaskill did not reply.
I wrote letters and faxed letters to each congressional member
of the Social Security subcommittee- no response. That tells me
they don’t want to hear the truth. Who are we low to moderate
income senior citizens to listen to? After all, we don’t contribute
much to compaign funds. But the big bank and insurances bosses-
the automaker bosses, the Wall Street and union bosses- do,
to the tune of millions of dollars. Guess who gets favored? Why,
of course it’s the big bosses who failed miserably at their jobs. So
they were rewarded with billions of dollars. No doubt, I suspect,
in exchange for millions in campaign contributions.
HOO-RAY the day is saved! For what? For higher taxes to pay
for all the bailouts, bonuses and pork projects of the favorite
Congress people. Years and years of taxes- HALLELUJAH! Render
unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s (Matthew 22:21).
Seems like in this case, it will be rendered unto the big bosses
so they can live high at our expense and we, low to moderate
income seniors, get the short end of the stick.
Our President, in his long winded state of the union speech,
recently acknowledged that the cost of living was rising on everything.
Was that a slip of the tongue or what? It only reinforces
my suspicions of conspiracy to rob our senior citizens of
our just and lawful cost of living increase to have more money
to pay bonuses, perks and exorbitant salaries to those who failed
in business.
Just a few examples of the rising cost of living (or negative
inflation as Senator Bond calls it): propane gas tripled in 2008
and 2009, I think the CPI conveniently missed that; electricity
up by 16.14%; vehicle insurance up 10+%; gasoline up dramatically.
These must have snuck by the CPI in their quest for “negative”
inflation. It’s no secret to most of us that canned fruits and
vegetables are much higher in price as well as fresh fruits and
vegetables along with all the other necessities of life.
What is all this? Scam? Sham? My dictionary says that a sham
is that which is designed to deceive, a trick or fraudulent device.
I think that describes the whole affair. Don’t you? Wouldn’t it be
proper to write, call, fax or email your congressman expressing
contempt for the way the whole matter has been handled? Then,
keep it up until you receive an answer that scratches the itch for
honesty, fairness, integrity and equality.
Respectfully,
Warren Morris
Dear Editor,
Just as the effects of a
challenging economy are felt
by families in every community,
cancer, too, has a farreaching
impact. No matter
how the stock market is performing
or what the current
unemployment rate may be,
there are still many people
battling a cancer diagnosis
and many others who are
lending support alongside
loved ones every day. These
realities make the dollars
donated and volunteer hours
devoted to the American
Cancer Society through Relay
for Life of Holt County,
a part of Holt County for 9
years, critically important.
Local volunteers are a huge
part of a nationwide effort to
After August, 2010 every subscriber
should be on a January, 2011 due date.
save lives from cancer, but
additional people are needed
for the progress to continue.
Plans are under way for the
society’s annual fundraiser,
Relay For Life, which will be
held on the Oregon Square
in June. This will be the
10th year that Karen Cotton
has been the chairperson
for this event...along with
the MANY volunteers that
help her in numerous ways.
The money raised at Relay
For Life (approximately
$150,000 in our 9 years!) enables
the American Cancer
Society to deliver on its mission
of helping people stay
well, helping people get well,
finding cures and fighting
back against the disease.
Now is the time for individuals,
families, community
groups, corporations and
small businesses to commit
their Relay For Life team
participation. We need more
teams and we need more
businesses to be corporate
sponsors. It’s easy and it’s
fun. Join us at this event to
celebrate those who have
battled cancer, remember
those lost, fight back against
the disease and help the
American Cancer Society
realize its vision of a world
with less cancer and more
birthdays.
News from Tiffany Heights
The week started off
with a session of “Did You
Know?”. Residents learned
many interesting facts
about this month. Some
are common knowledge
and others are less known.
For instance, did you know
that there is a Man Day? It
is a day that celebrates the
men of the world. It is held
annually the Sunday before
Valentine’s Day. Do you
suppose that has anything
to do with the Super Bowl?
There is also a National
Kraut and Frankfurter
Week, a Personal Chef Day
and many more interesting
and unique days.
Monthly Resident Council
was held on Tuesday
afternoon. This month,
residents chose to change
their favorite meal day to
the 12th in celebration of
Sweethearts’ Luncheon.
This year, six sets of married
couples will be at the
luncheon, including Mary
and George Wilson, Ruth
and Clinton Swymeler, Lucyle
and Max Benne, Genevieve
and John Grabel,
Virginia and Harold Eller
and Dorothy and Bob Gilland.
Residents chose Jamie
Johnson as Employee
of the Month. Jamie works
in the Nursing/Restorative
Department. Jamie has
worked for Tiffany Heights
for the last three years. Jamie
enjoys sewing, cooking,
reading and spendng time
with her son, Cain. Jamie
is originally from Wakefield,
RI.
Residents enjoyed the
afternoon on Wednesday
with a baking day. They
celebrated National Carrot
Cake Day and made carrot
muffins. Residents also
learned the value of having
carrots in their diets and
that mom was always right
when she said, “Carrots are
good for your eyes.”
Bingo volunteers on
Thursday were Shirley
Jackson, Dean McCall, Inez
VanOrman and Lucille
Stull.
Happy New Year, again!
The residents enjoyed another
New Year Party on
Friday, except this one was
the Chinese New Year. This
is the year of the Tiger. Residents
made crab rangoon,
egg rolls and treats. Of
course the crispy treat was
their favorite. The Chinese
calendar and the reasoning
for the twelve year cycle
was discussed, as well as
what traits residents had
under this calendar. Some
of them were correct. It is
hard to be an ox, but if you
are a tiger, it is your lucky
year, so enjoy.
“Mountain Man” Don Wright- Was the featured guest at
the Mound City Nutrition Site Show and Tell on Wednesday,
February 3. Don is shown with his collection of “Mountain
Man” paraphernalia, with over 30 people enjoying
them and the stories.
Mountain Man
show and tell
“Mountain Man”, Donnie
Wright, was this month’s
guest at the Mound City Nutrition
Site’s monthly show
and tell series. He was in
dress, with trinkets and artifacts
to help tell the story.
Don, who has been doing
reenacting since 1975, averages
about two shows a
month year round. He offers
six different shows to accomodate
the listeners’ preference.
The term “mountain man”
is usually applied to American
fur traders who explored
and trapped the western
half of North America. The
early 1800’s to the 1840’s
was known as the “mountain
man” era.
The American Mountain
Man was a colorful character.
He wore handmade
buckskin clothing, crude
woolen or broad brimmed
hats, and moccasins of buffalo
or deer hide. They were
almost always armed with
a rifle or shotgun, shoot-
ing stick, pistol and knife.
They carried their powder
in a horn slung over their
shoulder and their shot in a
bag tied around their neck.
Somewhere on their person
they carried flint and steel
for fire making.
After spending anywhere
from six months to three
years in the wilderness, their
hair and beards were unkept
and their personal hygiene
was lacking. Donnie mentioned
that their presence
was seldom appreciated in a
community and they didn’t
usually stay in one place for
very long.
Don enjoys doing the reenactment
shows for people.
“It’s one way I can give back
to the community for the
wonderful life they have given
to me,” Don stated.
The next show and tell at
the Mound City Nutrition
Site will be on Wednesday,
March 3, and will feature
Virgina Lent’s quilt collection.
St. Francis Family Health
Care’s extended hours’ program
was launched in August
of 2009 to meet the
residents’ expectations for
after-hour services. Focus
groups conducted in July
expressed the need for medical
provider services during
non-business hours for routine
and minor emergency
care at the health care center
in Maryville, MO.
Dr. Michael Wurm, family
practice physician and the
first physician to provide
coverage in the extended
hours clinic, said, “The purpose
of the clinic is to improve
access to care during
the early evening hours to
meet patient needs.”
After Wurm began seeing
patients on Wednesday and
Thursday evenings in August,
Dr. Patrick Harr began
a Tuesday evening clinic in
November with Dr. Kanti
Havaldar offering Monday
evening coverage in December.
Extended hours at clinic offers
alternative to traditional office visits
Since the program’s inception,
over 500 patients
have taken advantage of the
after-hours clinic which runs
from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and is operated
out of the St. Francis
Orthopedic & Sports Medicine
location. The clinic was
intentionally placed across
from the emergency department
at the hospital. “One
of the goals of the clinic is
to reduce the need for ED
visits from 5 to 6:30 p.m. for
minor emergencies,” Wurm
explained. “The primary
pur pose is to see people who
would not normally be able
to make an office visit during
traditional office hours.”
Walk-in patients are welcome
and a limited number
of appointments are scheduled
during the extended
hours clinic. Appointments
can be made by calling St.
Francis Family Health Care
at (660) 562-2525. However,
there is no appointment
phone coverage after 5 p.m.
Craig R-III Elementary celebrates
100 days of school
Craig R-III Elementary students - celebrated the 100th day of school on February 2,
2010. One of the many activities in which the students participated was collecting items
for a local food pantry. The goal was to collect 100 non-perishable items, but they surpassed
that goal. Pictured are the kindergarten through sixth grade students with their
contributions.
Senior Hornet Kevin Dodson- Layed this shot in during
their conference game with Rock Port on Friday, February
5, in Rock Port. During the week of play, Kevin tallied 23
points against Essex, 16 points against South Nodaway, 21
points in their conference win over Rock Port and 12 points
in their win over Hamburg.
CFX Hornets have a 4-0 week
The CFX Hornets had a
very successful week, going
4-0 in wins against Essex,
South Nodaway, Rock Port
and Hamburg. The victories
put the Hornets at 15-3
overall and 4-0 in conference
play.
The CFX Hornets utilized
excellent shooting and good
pressure defense in defeating
the visiting Essex Trojans
84-25 on Monday, February
1.
Kevin Dodson tallied 16
first quarter points in leading
CFX to a 28-6 lead at
the end of the period. The
Hornet lead continued to
grow in the second quarter,
and all players were able
to see action. The halftime
score was 52-12. Reserves
saw plenty of action in the
second half and were able to
maintain the Hornet lead.
Kevin Dodson led the way
for CFX with 23 points, Jordan
Showalter 20, Jordan
Sipes 14, Spencer Barnes 8,
Jacob Beck 8, Nathan Hinrichs
7, Tristan Ray and
Thauan Andrade with 2
each.
The Hornets traveled to
South Nodaway for their
second game of the week in
as many nights and came
away with a 74-28 victory.
South Nodaway solved the
CFX press early and trailed
just 12-10 with four minutes
left in the first period. From
that point on, however, the
Hornets' defensive pressure
and fast break offense
proved too much for the
host Longhorns. Jacob Beck
totalled 12 second quarter
points to lead the decisive
CFX charge, and the Hornets
went into the locker
room at half with a 48-16
lead.
Once again, reserves were
able to see plenty of playing
time in the second half and
the final score was 74-28.
Scoring for CFX was Jacob
Beck with 23, Kevin Dodson
16, Jordan Showalter 12,
Nathan Hinrichs 9, Spencer
Barnes 7, Tyler Brandt
3, and Graham Scarbrough
and Jordan Sipes with 2
each.
In a key Highway 275
Conference matchup, the
Hornets traveled to Rock
Port Friday night, February
5. Both teams entered
the game with unblemished
conference records. In a
game marked by good defense
played by both teams,
CFX was able to hold on and
emerged with a 41-35 win.
CFX started the game
quickly as Kevin Dodson and
Jordan Showalter combined
for 14 first quarter points
and a 16-9 Hornet lead after
one quarter. Both the pace of
the game and scoring would
slow down from that point.
The Blue Jays took advantage
of cold Hornet shooting
and turnovers in the second
quarter to trim the CFX lead
to 21-18 at the break.
The third period was
played at the same pace,
with neither team allowing
many easy baskets. CFX led
28-24 heading into the final
frame. The fourth quarter
saw the Blue Jays take their
first lead of the game on
Chase Chamberlain's three
point field goal with just
over three minutes remaining.
On the ensuing possession,
CFX's Nathan Hinrichs
hit a key three point basket
to give the lead back to the
Hornets and they were able
CFX Hornet Nathan Hinrichs-
Attacked the Rock
Port defense on his way to
the basket. Nathan helped
the Hornets earn four wins
for the week by tossing in 28
points.
to close out the game and
win, 41-35.
The Hornets hit just five of
14 freethrows in the fourth
quarter, enabling the Blue
Jays to remain close.
CFX scorers were Kevin
Dodson with 21, Jordan
Showalter 8, Spencer
Barnes 7, Nathan Hinrichs
3, and Jacob Beck 2.
Playing a makeup game
from the January 7 postponement,
the Hornets
hosted Hamburg on Saturday
afternoon, February 6,
and walked away with a 78-
46 victory.
Loose defense and cold
shooting by the Hornets
plagued the host team in
the first period and CFX led
just 16-10 after one quarter
of play. The CFX defensive
effort and shooting picked
up in the second quarter
and the Hornets led 43-23
at the break.
Graham Scarbrough led
the second quarter charge
with seven points. CFX was
able to continue their second
quarter effort and put
the Wildcats away in the
third quarter, amassing a
69-34 lead. With all starters
sitting in the final period,
the Hornets played on even
terms with the Wildcats and
the final score was 78-46.
CFX had a balanced scoring
attack led by Jacob Beck
with 16, Jordan Showalter
13, Kevin Dodson 12, Graham
Scarbrough 10, Nathan
Hinrichs 9, Jordan Sipes 7,
Spencer Barnes 6, and Garrett
Hinrichs with 5.
"I was extremely pleased
with our play this week,
Coach Petersen stated. “We
were able to play up-tempo
and establish our press in
our non-conference games.
We were also able to adjust
against Rock Port and play
solid zone defense while
grinding out a close win.
The remaining part of our
schedule has some very
good teams on it. We have a
chance to have an outstanding
season if we continue to
develop defensively and become
more consistent at the
charity stripe."

period left the Panther
trailing 33-4 at the half.
The Panthers were able to
The Lady Panthers crept
out to a 12-10 lead over the
steals and points for the
the first half stayed low. The
Panthers led 9-8 at the end
of the first quarter and 17-
The third quarter brought
For 60 years, Community Hospital-Fairfax
has been part of the
community. To celebrate the hospital’s
60th anniversary, the Development
Council has been collecting
stories from past patients
and staff. Some stories have been
submitted that will make one
smile and others may remind one
of a time the hospital has impacted
a life.
For Terry Carlisle, the 1976 delivery
of her daughter, Aimee, was
made just that much more special
when the nurses at Community
Hospital-Fairfax let her share
a room with her close friend,
who had also just delivered a
baby girl. The two friends were
happy for the company and also
pleased with the special care they
received from the staff. Little
touches, like letting them share a
room and bringing the two women
Pepsi Colas and Cherry Mash
candy bars, made them feel more
at home, Terry explained in her
story.
This story is just an example
of what the Development Council
hopes to collect. The Director of
Strategic Planning, Ann Schlueter,
hopes that more stories will
be submitted.
“The Storyteller’s Contest is
a great way to help the hospital
preserve memories for the next
generations to come,” Ann said.
The Development Council will
honor two winning stories at
the Celebrity Waiter Dinner on
March 27. Prizes will be awarded
to the funniest and most touching
stories. Winners do need to be
present.
To share stories, please email
Ann Schlueter at anns@fairfaxmed.com
