Errors in 275
JH Conference
track stats
The 275 Junior High
Conference Track meet
results were taken
from the official online
reports and then composed
for last week's
edition of the Mound
City News. It is now evident
that those online
results were grossly in
error.
The Mound City News
will run the corrected
results as soon as they
are made available, but
as of the current print
deadline, the only results
still available are
the erroneous ones.
Migratory Bird Day a success
Migratory Bird Day was
held Saturday, May 9, at
the Squaw Creek Wildlife
Refuge.
Several visitors participated
in various activities
held throughout the day.
Ten people traveled back
into the marsh to see a
demonstration on shorebirds.
Birds were captured
in nets that are so thin they
are called ‘mist nets’. The
birds were handled gently
before being released back
into the wild.
Observers were able to
see Least Sandpipers up
close as well as learn about
the variety of shorebirds
that visit the refuge.
Other events throughout
the day that attracted
participants were nature
crafts, bird hikes and a
special appearance by artist
Billy O’Donnell.
People came from as far
away at Columbia, MO,
and were able to get a
good viewing of shorebirds
News Beat
Our readers had a chance to experience technology at
its best with last week’s newspaper. The Junior High 275
Conference track results that we ran in last week’s edition
were incorrect. After the 25th person brought this to
our attention, I thought I would write an explanation.
Number one, since Chris Boultinghouse wanted to be
paid for the newspaper when I bought it, I can’t afford
an additional 12 staff members to cover the four area
schools and write down every single stat or result from
all the many athletic events. Therefore, we rely on stats
sent in by coaches and schools, which we certainly appreciate.
Number two, we realize that the stats were incorrect,
however the stats we received from the meet were printed
exactly the way they were sent to us.
Number three, my best guess is that the stats were
entered into a computer by a real person, and then the
computer program calcaluted the stats and printed them
out. It is possible that human error or a computer program
glitch was the culprit - either way the stats were
wrong.
Since the information was printed with incorrect stats,
I will take complete responsibility as I do with all the
stories that appear in this newspaper.
I am, however, really happy that people are reading
the newspaper. I hope that this sort of thing does not
happen in the future, except I do realize that it probably
will since mistakes are always possible with humans and
even possible with computers.
Remembering...By
Wonder who has that nice
yard?
On a typical Sunday afternoon
drive around the countryside
when we pass a well
kept yard, this is usually
what we wonder.
As a kid growing up, yards
weren’t like they are today.
Back then you could bet the
better kept yards belonged
to someone who had enough
money to hire someone to do
it, had a lot of energy or maybe
a house full of kids. Some
of the old timers back then
said you could generally tell
what kind or type of person
or persons were living in the
house by the condition of the
yard. Maybe so, but not necessarily
so today.
We had a large yard and I
grew up with one of the hand
push reel-type mowers. Commercial
fertilizers weren’t
used much then and we never
thought there was a need
to help Mother Nature water
it either. We had the common
blue grass variety and
were always happy when the
summer months came. Then
it went dormant and didn’t
need much mowing. The old
reel-type mower did provide
extra exercise, training in
patience and developed your
thinking, especially in ways
to get out of it.
We had this big mixed
German Shepherd dog who
would catch hold our pant
legs and pull us around sliding
on the grass. This was
a lot of fun until Mom put
a stop to it, because of torn
places and grass stains on
our clothing. I thought since
he was strong enough to pull
Kiwanis news
The Mound City Kiwanis
Club met at The Klub on
Wednesday, May 6, with 12
members and three guests
present. Guests included Annette
Weeks, Gwen Knowles
and Audrey Heck.
Gwen Knowles gave a presentation
about Parents as
Teachers. The topic generated
a number of questions
and comments.
Several topics were discussed
including the flags
celebration. David King is
coordinating the parade and
Bev Shifflett volunteered to
Blood drive to be held
Last year, 28,000 individuals
in this area needed a
blood transfusion. This year,
the local needs for blood are
expected to rise. Community
Blood Center, the provider of
blood services to local hospitals,
will be conducting
a blood drive on Thursday,
May 21, in Mound City at
the First Christian Church
basement.
“When individuals normally
think of essential
community services, they
think about the fire and police
departments,” said Dr.
Jay Menitove, Executive
Director and Medical Director
with Community Blood
Center. “However, because
Community Blood Center is
here to meet the needs of lo-
cal patients, we would hope
that individuals in our community
would consider us to
be just as essential,” Menitove
stated.
Individuals in Mound City
can help meet the local needs
by donating blood at the
Community Blood Center
blood drive on Thursday, May
21, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. in
the First Christian Church
basement at 402 East 5th
Street. Appointments can be
made by calling Betty Tinker
at (800) 725-6791 or online
at www.esavealifenow.
org and use the sponsor code
moundcitycomm1.
Just one donation can help
as many as two local hospital
patients. Community
Blood Center must collect at
least 580 pints of blood every
day to meet the needs of this
area.
us around that he could be
tied up to the mower and all
we’d have to do was guide it.
He could do it alright, but he
outsmarted us and decided, if
he would pull it sideways instead
of straight ahead, we’d
give up on him and we did.
On the farm, work around
the yard was usually put
aside for a time when it was
either rainy or the other work
was caught up. Using the
old reel mower in tall grass
and weeds was almost a lost
cause, even after we could get
one with a gasoline engine
doing all the work. Giving
it due credit, if you kept the
grass cut as needed it did a
beautiful job, one to be proud
to show off to the Sunday
drivers.
One of the greatest happenings
was when the rotary
blade mower came out. The
first I remember was one Dad
traded for. It was a Good-all,
made in Nebraska, and it was
just an engine on a deck deep
enough to cover up the blade,
a couple wheels to carry it
and a fixed handle to guide
it. It was built to cut grass,
weeds and anything else in
the way, like rocks, sticks,
pine cones, kids’ toys or anything
our pets may have drug
in. That didn’t bother that
mower, it just slung it out the
side, front or back and hopefully
no one would be hit by
anything. Even though we
canvassed the yard for all of
the above, we always managed
to miss a few.
We nicknamed those rotary
mowers “whirlygigs” and at
first they were thought to be
too dangerous to use. They
would soon be closed down
due to safety violations and
no one would want one anyway.
Over the years, progress
was made in segments: a
shield in the back to protect
Missouri Army National
Guardsmen, Christopher Owens,
Mound City, and Timothy
Beard, Mound City, were recently
promoted to the rank of
specialist. Both men are field
After a while a reel mower
couldn’t even be given away,
much less trying to sell one
at a garage sale.
Betty and I, over the years,
have probably had more
mowers than we should’ve.
Excluding the old reel push
types, we’ve had five rotary
push mowers and nine riding
mowers. Our favorite rotary
has been the “Lawn Boys”,
with the exception of one.
It was a special to celebrate
some kind of event and was
of an ivory color instead of
green. I think that must have
been part of the problem, for
it started out giving us problems.
Betty always mowed
when I was out of town and
this one time she filled the
tank from a can I had old oil
in. I never could get it to run
right even after replacing the
tank, fuel lines and carborator.
Maybe I should’ve tried
painting it green, but instead
I traded it off.
We’ve had riders that had
side discharge, rear discharge,
fancy sacking attachments,
full mulching, easy to operate
and hard to operate. One we
had with rear discharge was
a favorite, but when I went
for a second one, it had been
discontinued. Now if all the
different makes, styles, horsepower,
attachments, options
and prices would be put together,
it would look like one
of the old Sears Summer wish
books. Anyway, if Al Gore and
his ‘Go for Green with clean
air’ causes me to have to go
back to the reel-type push
Spring Fling planned in Holt County
The Holt County Historical
Society is planning a
“Spring Fling”, a day long
step back in time, Saturday,
May 30, on the spacious tree
shaded school grounds, at
the north edge of Fortescue.
Activities will begin at 9:00
a.m. and continue throughout
the day.
Various living history areas
will give an opportunity
to step into old time crafts
and activities. A visit with
the “school marm” in the
little brick school house,
or watching a basket being
made or tasting hand
churned butter are sure to
bring back memories! Everyone
will have a chance
to dance the Virginia Reel,
or look inside an authentic
Tee Pee, or hear first hand
about Lewis and Clark traveling
through Holt County
on their trip up the Missouri
River.
There will only be outdoor
toilets. Those attending are
urged to bring along a lawn
chair.
Anyone with crafting skills
is invited to come share their
talents and to offer their
items for sale if they want.
Those with vintage automobiles
or tractors are welcome
to come show them off.
The Society will have a
food stand available all day.
Vendors (except food stands)
are welcome without charge
to come find a shady spot
and offer their products.
It will also be a fun time to
wear old time clothing, so dig
out grandma’s old dress or
find grandpa’s straw hat he
always wore to the field, and
come spend the day, meet
your friends, and experience
spring in Holt County.
Cedar boxes and chests- Were on display at the Nutrition
Site on May 6. Mendell and Wilda Athen have had vast
experience showing their wares, including last week’s Show
and Tell.
Stained Glass and Cedar Chests
Kim Kling and Mendell and
Wilda Athen, all of Mound
City, displayed their wares at
the monthly ‘Show and Tell’
Exhibit at the Nutrition Site
on Wednesday, May 6.
Kim Kling picked up her
stained glass hobby nearly
10 years ago. “I have always
been fascinated by the beauty
of stained glass,” Kim remarked.
“After getting started
in it, I developed a great
appreciation for the craft. It
takes a lot of time and it can
be quite expensive.”
Kim has crafted over one
hundred pieces since she began.
In recent years, she created
ten stained glass nativity
sets. Her pieces are not
sold, but given away as gifts.
Her most challenging project
has been a lampshade
that has 64 bevels in it. It is
a very difficult piece that has
been a work in progress. Kim
assures that the red, white,
blue and clear lampshade
will be completed “one of
these days”.
Also showing their craft
that day were Mendell and
Wilda Athen. Mendell had
his first taste of woodworking
as a high school student
in Hamburg; In shop class,
where he crafted his very
first cedar chest.
Mendell started building
them for sale shortly after his
retirement as district manager
of Aztec Seed Co. in the
early 80’s. He aquired some
cedar logs on a work trade
and then purchased a shopsmith
from his son-in-law’s
father to cut the lumber.
One day he told his wife
Wilma, “I think my woodworking
needs dressing up,”
so he bought her woodburning
supplies, and after a
class, she took off with many
creative ideas.
Mendell and Wilma spent
over a decade travelling to
thousands of craft shows. The
convention craft shows in the
west took them to L.A., Reno,
Salt Lake City and many other
destinations. They would
return to Missouri for wood
and then back to the workshop.
In addition to making cedar
chests, Mendell constructs
boxes of all sizes, footstools,
rocking horses, cup holders,
a dice game and many other
special order items.
Wilma can add many different
wood burning images to
the cedar boxes. Images from
pictures, as well as a variety
of other choices, are available
as options.
A good crowd took in the
exhibit. The Mound City Nutrition
Site offers these ‘Show
and Tell’ Events on the first
Wednesday of each month.
The interest and attendance
continues to grow as area
residents showcase their talents.
Sen. Lager secures funds
for Graves-Chapple Farm
Sen. Brad Lager, R-
Maryville, is pleased to announce
the Graves-Chapple
Research Farm will receive
more than $500,000 of funding
to develop a new education
facility and continue its
educational mission. Graves-
Chapple Farm is part of the
University of Missouri extension
program and is a research
facility dedicated to
improving agricultural production
and profitability of
northwest Missouri farmers.
“The availability of resources
to complete the promises
made through the Lewis and
Clark Discovery Initiative
could not have come at a better
time,” said Lager. “These
programs are vital to rural
Missouri, and I’m very proud
to see promises kept in fulfilling
the commitment made to
fund these projects.”
Graves-Chapple Farm was
established in 1988 and is located
in southwest Atchison
County and northwest Holt
The win advanced ESU
to the NCAA Division II
Tournament for their sixth
straight year. The Hornets
were awarded the No. 4 seed
in the NCAA South Central
Region hosted by the No.
1 seed Angelo State. They
played Nebraska-Omaha
in the opening round of the
South Central Regional-1
on Friday, May 8. ESU had
a 3-2 win over Nebraska-
Omaha at the opening of the
tournament, but fell twice
on Saturday to finish the
tournament.
In 2008, ESU was the
national runner-up. Humbolt
State won the National
Championship with a 1-0
victory over Emporia State.
Lauren Loucks, daughter
of Steve and Debbie Loucks,
has been the Assistant Softball
Coach at Emporia State
University for the past six
years.
County. Its research and
demonstrations deal with
various agronomic practices
with a major emphasis on
corn and soybeans. The funding
for the new educational
facility had been eliminated
early in the 2009 Legislative
Session, before additional
funding resources had been
made available for critical
capital improvement projects
throughout the University of
Missouri system.
“The completion of this
project will ensure the continued
development of educational
opportunities and
agricultural research in rural
Missouri,” said Lager. “I am
amazed at the work that is
done at the Graves-Chapple
Farm and I am glad that we
can continue to support their
efforts to improve agricultural
development in Missouri.”
First elected to the Missouri
House in 2002, Sen. Lager
now represents the people of
sixteen counties in northwest
Missouri that comprise the
12th Senatorial District.
Ask the Ag Team
A primer on basic gardening,
part 6- by Tim Baker,
Horticulture Specialist, University
of Missouri Extension,
Daviess County
In my last column, I discussed
watering, which is a
critical management practice
for successful gardening. This
time, I would like to cover
weed control.
Weeds are the long-standing
enemies of all gardeners. A lot
of time and effort can be spent
fighting weeds. If they are not
controlled, they will compete
with your crop for water and
nutrients. Many weeds also
harbor diseases and insect
pests. Thus, it’s critical to keep
weeds under control.
When you plant your crop,
be sure you have the correct
distances between the rows
and between the plants within
the row. The idea here is that
by using the correct distances,
you will have the optimal plant
density per square foot. That
is important for plant health
and yield, but it is also critical
for weed control. If the plant
density is too light, weeds will
not be shaded well, and will
grow. If the plant density is
too heavy, yields will suffer
and disease pressure may increase.
Be sure that you plant at
the correct time as well. If you
plant too early, plant growth
will be slow and weeds can
easily outgrow your crop. If
you plant too late, hot weather
may reduce plant growth in
some crops, allowing weeds
that are well-adapted to heat
to thrive. It seems that there
is always a weed ready to take
advantage of a stressed crop,
so, plant at the optimal time.
Chemical weed control is
possible for some large-scale
vegetable crops, but in a home
garden situation, it’s tricky.
Most gardens have plants of
different species in close proximity
to each other. A chemical
that may be safe for one
species may injure another.
It’s best to look elsewhere for
weed control methods.
Mechanical methods of weed
control, such as hoeing, tilling,
cultivating, etc., are classics,
and do well. They also can be a
lot of work. That’s not all bad,
since exercise is a great sidebenefit
of gardening.
But for many people, time is
limited. A little touchup hoeing
on the weekend works well,
but for everyday weed control,
they need a full-time solution.
Mulching is the answer.
Mulch has several advantages
and weed control is its high
point. There are few weeds
that can germinate and make
it through 2-3 inches of a good
mulch. Mulch also reduces
evaporation from the soil surface,
thus conserving moisture
and reducing the need for irrigation.
It also maintains an
even soil temperature.
Mulches may be made of organic
materials, such as straw.
Or you can use man-made materials,
such as black plastic.
Both have their places. And
there’s a right and wrong way
to use them.
For example, black plastic is
great in the spring, when you
need to warm up the soil so
that your crop can grow faster.
In summer’s heat, you don’t
need to warm your soil, so you
should cover the black plastic
with an organic mulch if it’s
not shaded well by the crop.
Organic mulches are great
in the summer, but have drawbacks
in cool weather. They
insulate the soil, and prevent
it from warming up. That’s
not good if you are growing
a warm-season crop such as
tomatoes. If you’re not using
a heat-gaining material such
as black plastic, it’s best to
leave the soil bare and remove
weeds by hand. Save the organic
mulches for later.
One precaution: Don’t use
raw manure as mulch. There
are real concerns that pathogens
might get on your food.
Also, many manures are simply
too “hot”, and may cause
injury to your crop.
