News Beat
Rainy 4th
This year, the 4th Blast fireworks were shot by a local
crew. The past few years a licensed pyrotechnician and crew
had to be hired to shoot the city show. This year, a local
crew and I shot the show. After talking with a few citizens,
I decided to get my certifications and licenses in hopes of
saving the money previously spent to hire a crew to shoot.
We were able to assemble a small crew and shoot this
year despite the rainy weather - (Chris Boultinghouse
informed me, after the show, that this is the 19th consecutive
year that the Mound City fireworks show has not been
rained out). I hope everyone was able to make it out and
watch the show.
As far as the fireworks’ display goes, we hope to perfect
the shoot and provide a better display each year.
We hope you enjoyed the show and thank you all for donating.
Maybe next year we will have better weather!
Heat and humidity
can create health
risks at any age
The heat and humidity
that often mark summertime
in Missouri can create
a health hazard for people
of all ages, state health officials
warn.
While the very young, the
elderly and the chronically
ill are at greatest risk of
heat-related illness, summer
temperatures can take
a toll on healthy young and
middle-aged adults, too.
Of the 11 Missourians
who died from heat-related
causes last year, eight were
25 to 64 years of age. Only
three were age 65 or older.
“High temperatures
coupled with high humidity
can cause health problems
quickly and with little
warning,” said Margaret
Donnelly, director of the
Missouri Department of
Health and Senior Services.
“Summer Safety Week
reminds us of the precautions
we need to take to
protect ourselves and others,
especially those who
are particularly vulnerable
to the heat.”
The elderly and the
chronically ill perspire less
and are more likely to be
taking medication that can
impair the body’s response
to heat or that make them
more sensitive to the heat.
Those medications include
antihistamines, overthe-counter
sleeping pills,
antidepressants, heart
drugs, antipsychotics, major
tranquilizers and some
medications for Parkinson’s
disease. People should
check with their doctor or
pharmacist to find out if
their medications make
them more sensitive to
summer’s high temperatures.
Senior citizens on fixed
incomes often do not have
air conditioning or feel they
cannot afford the extra expense
of running it. Since
many seniors live alone,
Missourians should check
on elderly family members
and neighbors regularly to
be sure they are not suffering
from the effects of the
heat.
Donnelly urges Missourians
to use the state’s
toll-free abuse and neglect
hotline at 1-800-392-0210
to report senior citizens or
adults with disabilities suffering
from the heat and
needing assistance. The
hotline operates 8:00 a.m.
to 8:00 p.m. seven days a
week.
Young children are also
sensitive to heat and must
rely on adults to regulate
their environments to prevent
heat-related illness.
Infants and children
should not be left unattended
in hot environments, especially
in cars, even with
the air conditioner running.
A car’s interior can reach
oven-like temperatures in
minutes, putting anyone
inside at risk of overheating.
Children also should
not be allowed to play in
or around cars. Small children
can become trapped
because they are not big
enough to open the door
or roll down the window to
get out. They also can fall
asleep inside a hot vehicle
or play or hide in the trunk
of a car.
Children also can become
dehydrated very quickly.
Small children often do
not drink as much liquid
as they should and can become
dehydrated. Adults
need to encourage children
to drink plenty of fluids every
day.
Symptoms as modest as
dizziness or muscle cramps
can be signs of heat-related
illness. For more warning
signs and ways to treat
the heat, visit www.dhss.
Tech Talk
with Troy Cook
Here’s a scenario. After last
night’s thunderstorm, you discover
that lightning has fried
your computer’s hard drive.
Your pictures, music, documents,
scans; all of it…gone.
The fact of the matter is that
this happens all too often. The
good news is there is something
you can do about it, and you can
do it today. Deploy a backup
strategy for your home computer.
There are several types of
home backup strategies that
you can deploy depending on
how “protected” you wish to be.
Personally, some of my data, including
pictures of my family,
are priceless and I don’t take
chances. I start by setting up
a local backup to an external
hard drive. You can purchase
an external hard drive at most
technology retailers.
While the local backup protects
you against general hard-
ware failure, it doesn’t protect
against everything. If lightning
strikes and takes out your computer,
chances are it will take
out the backup device as well.
Additionally, disasters such as
fires, tornados or floods would
destroy your computer along
with any local backup. With
that in mind, I also utilize an
offsite backup application.
Offsite backup means that
your data is stored outside of
your home. This is extremely
beneficial in the event that your
computer and local backup are
both destroyed.
There are hundreds of online
backup providers so finding the
right one is critical. One of the
most important factors to consider
with an offsite backup
strategy is trust. Where is my
data stored? Does my provider
have a backup plan if disaster
strikes them? Will a technician
assist me in setting up my
backups so I know everything is
protected? Will I receive daily
notifications on my backup status?
If I need to restore, will
someone be there to help me?
These are all questions that you
should have answers to before
selecting a backup provider.
In today’s information age,
protecting your data is vital. I
would recommend doing so with
an offsite backup provider that
you can trust. If you have any
questions regarding backup
strategies, please call our office
at 660-744-5343 to talk with
one of our experts.
